I have hearing aids but I used my Airpods Pro 2 with Active Noise Cancellation at a concert and they cut the sound by 20db. My watch was saying the concert was at 98db but my Airpods were giving my 78db. They worked really good.
There are comments online claiming that AirPods Pro 2 cannot be used at concerts to protect your hearing, as it is physically impossible. Now, Apple advertised it as something you can in fact use at loud concerts and shows. Would be curious to know whether AirPods in at a concert could protect your hearing well enough to prevent hearing loss.
@@XeZrunner As I commented, at the Australian Pink Floyd concert, my Apple Watch was saying that my environment was 98 decibels and my Airpods Pro 2 were outputting 78 decibels. I'd say that is some sort of protection.
Audiology tests plus a decent set of hearing aids will set you back $3000 and if you want Bluetooth connectivity hearing aids a lot more. These headphones which many people already have are going to be a game changer for many people with hearing loss. Well done Apple
Good to know that the hearing test is universal between civilian doctors and the VA. Not even a year after I retired from the Air Force, my wife begged me to get a hearing test done. I’ve been using hearing aids for a few years now. Seeing this makes me happy.
I am a harpist and my instrument regularly goes above 90db. I'm really looking forward to this update as Loop and similar muffle the quality of the sound which is frustrating. Professional/custom sound regulation devices cost thousands of dollars so this will hopefully be a workaround for a lot of people!
It’s for people who need hearing aid sometimes (not all the time), it’s also for people with hearing loss but don’t want to look “old” wearing hearing aid. I hope Samsung will do something similar so I can buy a pair for my father, he’s so used to his Samsung phone, it won’t be easy to make him switch to iPhone.
Thank you for making this video! You did a deep dive into a very important topic. I’m 54 and have moderately severe hearing loss. I had to start using hearing aids last year and have struggled with each one I’ve tried. They all struggle with ambient sound and isolating and amplifying voices so you can understand what someone is saying to you. I paid $5000+ for a pair of Phonak hearing aids and they aren’t great. I understand AirPods aren’t intended to address my type of hearing loss, but I am eager to try them out. Just having a conversation at a restaurant and hearing people in noisy environments is currently very frustrating. If the AirPods can help in certain situations for me, it would be a huge help.
If 6 hours are not long enough, do what we did 30 years ago with the first Nokia mobiles (we were carrying a spare, charged battery). So.. get a spare pair of AirPods. Each pair will charge in its case while you're using the other. Still a cheaper solution than a pair of medical (...) hearing aids.
Well there are over-the-counter hearing aid models today that last 24 hours on a single charge, so if you already use a hearing aid like that, you wouldn't just replace them with AirPods. But it certainly will be a first step for many who haven't even tried one, or a supplemental device for people who already use hearing aids. And keep in mind, this is for mild to moderate hearing loss, if you have severe loss then AirPods are not a solution.
If only they can make something that actually makes sure you're actually using them. My parents paid $3,000 for those app powered hearing aids for my stepmom and she almost never uses them
That’s not the same thing. The dialogue boost we already had but this FDA grade hearing approval is a new feature hence the need for an approval in the first place
HUH??? How is that possible??? using the same ios and NOTHING.......????? Dont get the hearing aid. Tried for an firmware update for the airpods, nothing???
It sounded exactly the same for me as the outside world - it just didn’t hurt my eardrums as much as I got my head near the piano (which I could feel when I took the AirPods off)
I am hoping it helps my husband enough that he wants to hear all the time, and finally gets help. I think one thing that stops him is we know people that don’t wear their hearing aids. That and the cost.
As someone with single sided deafness I'm very excited to test out these new features. Maybe someday Apple will enable a way of giving us simulated stereo hearing like a "CROS" hearing aid can.
I hope these take off for concert use.... I don't want to be the only guy at a concert wearing them! This is a much better solution than the shooting ear plugs I currently use.
What another color AirPods for this application. White is too distracting talking with ppl thinking they are listening to music rather than our conversation. Work with Tinnitus?
It will be an interesting cultural shift to be talking to people wearing them and realizing that they are using AirPods to hear you, or a concert, perfectly fine. And to your other question, the features are not designed for treating tinnitus. Although maybe one could argue that if you use these to protect your hearing, maybe you can guard against tinnitus, since it is often connected with loud sound exposure.
That actually wasn't the case at all. He was really excited about it and isn't worried -- this gets more people talking about hearing health and protecting their hearing, and you should still see a doctor if you have hearing loss issues. Maybe people will find this as a cheaper, entry-level solution if they were discouraged from trying a hearing aid before.
I don't think I want to be juggling several AirPods in my purse or pocket if I need hearing aids to make my way through the world. But I like how they become an easy supplemental device.
@@BridgetCarey That’s definitely fair, It’s just hard for me to comprehend hearing aids costing $5,000 US. I have two family members both telling me they have spent 5k+ and I immediately assumed they got scammed until I started researching. The cost of making these aids has to be significantly less than AirPods… 1 case with two pods, with 2 pods in your ears seems like a pretty good deal since 1 case would allow for all day use, but I have to keep in mind I am a very techie person with only very mild hearing issues.
It’s not really a hearing aid. It is an in-ear headphone, or earbud, or what-have-you, that happens to have some hearing aid features. I’ll stick with my Rextons.
