Your disclaimer at the start makes me so pleased and happy. I have disabilities, and it's because of your reviews that I went and got myself a slappy chopper. It's made a world of difference. But that disclaimer means a lot, so thanks Barry :)

To be fair, the slappy chopper is useful for literally everyone but it's a point well made. I get annoyed when people make fun of supermarket pre-chopped stuff, because there's people who really need that stuff. Or at least that stuff means they can make meals solo they otherwise couldn't. Incidentally, if you look on Amazon, Barry's slappy chopper is about £20. If you go up to about £26 there are ones that also have a bunch of replaceable stuff on the lid so you can do grating, chopping and even juicing straight into tub. As an added bonus, none of the blades have fallen out of mine yet :P

The chocolate did that from ANY water that was in the gadget. Also, 5sec bursts would be better towards the end to stop it burning.

@RedstonerD
@RedstonerD 6 лет назад
AttackRunRepeat I think it's mostly stirring because of how uneven microwaves heat up stuff
@carlinianam0s
@carlinianam0s 6 лет назад
RedstonerD Chocolate seizes when it comes in contact with water because chocolate is just oil (and thus doesn't mix with water lol). You're right about the microwave being uneven, which is why it's important to stir often and melt in short blasts to make sure it doesn't overheat and burn or seize. Maybe next time, Barry
@FrankieA1998
@FrankieA1998 6 лет назад
Massaging the chocolate in the thing is necessary for even heating. Just like you have to stir chocolate in a bowl, you have to move it around and mix it in the silicone thing
@RFC3514
@RFC3514 6 лет назад
Chocolate isn't "just oil", it contains over 100 different substances, and only 10-30% (depending on the type of chocolate) is oil or cocoa butter. Sugar typically makes up more than 40%, and the rest is mostly cocoa solids (and powdered milk, if you're using milk chocolate). Although water can indeed turn chocolate "lumpy" (by combining with the _sugar_ - the issue isn't the oil), what seems to be happening here is the chocolate is getting burned by microwave nodes (i.e., places where the wave is static). Fun fact: you can actually use this effect with a large bar of chocolate to measure the length of microwaves (approximately 12 cm)! Well-designed ovens have less nodes, but there's often one near the centre. You can reduce that effect by putting the chocolate off-centre on the dish (which rotates precisely to avoid those nodes) or using containers that absorb part of the microwaves and then radiate the heat more evenly (typically thick glass or ceramics). With the right set-up you can even go full bast for a couple of minutes, and melt it just fine. Putting chocolate inside a thin plastic container right in the middle of a microwave is just asking for trouble.

Hey Barry. The cheese grater is not new. I’m a 54 year old Australian and my mother had a metal version of this before I started school. The grater could be clamped to a table edge and small blocks of cheese would be put into the hopper. As you turned the handle the cheese would fall from the side into a bowl that was placed beside the grater. I really enjoy your videos. (Especially the ones where Mrs Barry joins in). Keep making great entertaining videos!

yeah i dont think reusing previous gadgets would be an issue - it's not meant to introduce new gadgets, it's meant to decide which gadget is best out of a category of (old or new) gadgets that do the same thing. you could also test the gadgets vs the ungadgeted form - for example, if you were testing various avocado slicers, you would also have a regular knife and you would cut the avocado the normal way without any assistance from gadgets

Chocolate requires agitation/stirring to melt smoothly when microwaved due to how microwaves heat unevenly, ie:it doesn't transfer heat well and if it gets too hot in one particular spot that one spot will burn and appear seized, while chocolate around it will melt. Try gently squeezing/massaging the container between bursts rather than shaking. After two 30 second bursts swap to 15 or 10 seconds, your second attempt of chocolate looked good before the final burst, it just needed some stirring to equalise the temperature through the whole mixture. Also make sure the container is bone dry because water will seize it.

@SangosEvilTwin
@SangosEvilTwin 6 лет назад
Regarding temperature, IMO, no one should be hacking at another person for their temperature preferences. We all acclimate differently, and some never acclimate properly to heat or cold. I spent 23 years in a hot area, I still can't take what I consider hot temperatures. A person from like, Texas or Florida, or any other routinely hot country would consider my idea of hot a cool spring day most likely. However, what I consider a truly cold winter day would have them running for the heater. It's all a matter of what each person can take.

@@xleaguex2655 if you use it the other way around, the yolk and whites would be disconnected and the channel for letting the whites flow into the cloud would be pointless. D0senpf4nd [Sigh] Regardless of what's claimed on the side of a package containing a piece of junk, a rotary grater does not perform well with softer cheeses. Someone who's never used a rotary grater before probably wouldn't know that unless they're warned, but it's common knowledge for those of us who have. I'm not placing "blame" or admonishing anyone. It should never get too hot to handle because the melting temperature is not that high. also after probably about 45 seconds if you shake it up and if you just keep shaking it it should melt all the way through you never want to have it all the way melted in the microwave you want to finish melting it kind of out of the microwave while you're shaking it. Hope this helps.

wow your knife is incredibly dull (it shouldn't make that tapping noise) you really need to sharpen it and i belive you have the silicone egg mold upside down
@d2factotum
@d2factotum 6 лет назад
I think you're right about the mould--if he had it the other way up then he could crack the egg directly into the yolk hole, and the white would flow out into the rest of it and leave the yolk cooking. The way Barry had it I doubt the yolk cooked properly.
@JJoy-bk8yr
@JJoy-bk8yr 6 лет назад
I think the egg mold was the right way because the yolk and white are joined at the bottom and then mold lifts off cleanly leaving them together but appearing to be separate. Besides, it matches the picture on the box. He could have skipped a few steps and cracked the egg right into the sun part though.
@ScarfmonsterWR
@ScarfmonsterWR 6 лет назад
The silicone egg mold was fine. It's shaped like that so you don't need to separate the yolk, just pour the whole egg into the circle.

Your microwave is so cool! It looks kinda retro but has cool buttons. I dont get how you'd set a specific time without a number pad though. And stirring or shaking chocolate is probably a good idea. Maybe was there some water left over in the silicone after washing? That could cause it to seize. Or also maybe get it mostly melted and then instead of putting it back in the microwave let it sit and shake or stir it until the rest is melted? Whenever I melt chocolate in a bowl I never microwave it fully to liquid. I get it mostly there then stir to let the residual heat melt the last bits!

Great video! I'm heading off to college and renting a apt with no kitchen, it's a steal though. $400 usd for 1 bedroom (sharing) 1 bathroom, 1 living room and free internet, paid bills for water/electricity. What is a must need gadget or tech for me since I have no kitchen but still need to cook?

Toni Alves no he didn’t because what your supposed to do is crack the egg into the sun and the whites would go out underneath the overhang. Also the white going outside the edges of the mould is totally normal

We have a few of those cheese graters and find them super useful for Parmesan specifically! As it's a harder cheese it doesn't all stick, clog, and congeal. Plus with harder cheeses you have to use a lot of force to grate them with normal box graters - and so this gadget makes it much much easier!

Also, you want a decent apron that a man can be proud of, get the denim apron from Pampered Chef. 100% rugged blue denim, fully adjustable neck string, 2 large pockets up front. It doesn't try to over-complicate things, it's just quality armor against grease splatters.

I remember I had a similar kind of cheese grater a fair time ago, except for two crucial changes. It was entirely metal, and it was in two pieces instead of three, the handle was part of the grating... Barrel thing. That made it much more sturdy and durable, and many a cheese was grated so easily my seven year old self did it safely.

I used to work at Olive Garden and they had cheese graters sort of like that, but better quality. They use a romano cheese- low oil, hard cheeses grate much easier and don't get caught in the graters like that. There is sidework at Olive Garden JUST to cut cheese for the graters. I was entertained by you being very excited about that cheese grater lol.
