So many shows do that. They take well defined characters and turn them into caricatures to - Hell, I don't know why they do it. They just like to go full-on exaggerated personalities, and ridiculous situations, and that ruins everything.

I'm not denying teenage Jake had his clever moments but little Jake was way funnier, cuter, wittier, smarter, smoother and had such a unique relationship with his uncle Charlie! They were like comrades, mentor and student, partners in crime! I think the point is, despite the fact that he had to grow up and challenge his adult attachment figures as a teenage divorce child in some way, younger Jake got so many more different facets out of Charlie. Later Charlie was just continuously annoyed by Jake, some weekends more, some weekends less!

@Fran Ra Ok that's definitely not what I meant! No one on earth would've bought or enjoyed a sweet innocent teenage boy, especially not in the constant presence of an oncle like Charlie ^^ 😆 However, I've never really seen the need to turn him 180° in the other direction, a lazy, farty, sulky dumbhead with zero charisma, altruism, intellect or coolness. That's just the cliché-ridden trope of any teenage boy in US TV and far from the round, original Jake from the first 4 seasons. The boy was already "challenging" around S3 but still frightfully clever in his own way. He definitely had street smarts and creativity, even charm (remember Charlie preparing him for his first party with girls?!). Bottom line, I think a teenage Jake that *acts* slow-witted and uninspired so nobody would expect anything of him and he can have things his way while actually ruling that crazy family without anybody noticing, would have been so much cooler!😀 That secret puppeteer also would've been the divorce child many of us wish we could have been. ... or something entirely different, just not the flat cliché-ridden lazy ass nightmare teenager Jake Harper turned out to be.

Didn't Charlie insult Chuck after being hella unprofessional? 🙄 Not saying that Show was great after Charlie left just saying that he insulted the creator and didn't even apologized. Chuck fired him mainly for his self respect I think.

I liked all of the seasons with Charlie but yeah. The first two seasons were sth really special. The humor was always there, but there were very touching scenes too. You could SEE the intentions of character development for Alan, Jake and Charlie. Sadly, the writers gave up on the show way before Charlie got fired.
