It's great when you find a company that standardizes wages. My current job I gave a pay range when they hired me and they chose to pay me the maximum I asked for because it's their standard for my position despite the fact I didn't have industry experience. So I know some co-workers that started higher, but I'm not mad knowing I could have been making $5 less per hour if they took the low end of the range I gave them. I was willing to start off lower to get my foot in the door and gain experience. I'll save the negotiating for later. @rajbeekie7124
@rajbeekie7124 3 года назад
Dave is WRONG. This case probably has nothing to do with entitlement. If this woman is bringing more value to the table she should be paid more than the other employee. It is all context. Assuming all things are relatively equal, the woman needs to approach management and discuss what she needs to do for the company in order to get to $20. or $25 an hour. Now, if she really believes she is worth higher pay to an organization she needs to find a place where her skills are values at the upper level. If she can't, then she will have to accept the $16. Pay is related to relevance in the market place. The more relevant the greater the pay. It is as simple as that.

Strongly disagree with Dave’s statement. I have been fortunate to work at an environmental firm while finishing up a degree, and also being able to work along well with the environmental managers. Both environmental managers were very well knowledgeable about their work, yet one was underpaid due to him only having an associate’s degree. That manager would mention how having a bachelors degree can greatly assist you with negotiating a salary. It’s something mentioned in school as well. In my opinion, that environmental manager brought a lot to the company and picked up a major project before the previous manager retired. His work was quality work, providing as much detail, and yet was underpaid. Fortunately he was able to find a better job opportunity. That environmental manager built good relationships with our clients and they still call asking for him today. So I apologize, but I strongly disagree with the argument about bringing value to the company. Even if you do that, a company could still use some excuse to underpay you. And at that point, it is best to part ways with that company.

I think many companies are unfair. I went through this situation when I was young at my first job. I worked there seven years. My manager tried to get me more money but my the higher ups would cry poverty. I found out everyone in my position was making another $10,000 then me. I told them I was resigning to finish graduate school. Magically they offered me the extra $10,000.00 to stay. I declined.

I just did my job really well and had a good attitude. I didn't think I would get promoted for a few years. So I just did my thing and focused on me. I was surprisingly promoted this year!

I work in government and the two of us in my office were started on salary meaning half days didn’t count against us. When the federal law changed Jan 2020 we went from salary to hourly and don’t get the benefits we were told we would get. Then we have other departments that make $10,000-$15,000 more than we do a year and we do half of their work for them. 🙄 there is no room for growth in this place as all the positions are “predetermined”. It’s safe to say, I’m not looking to retire here, but merely gain experience so I can take it else where.

A lot of companies you won't earn more unless you ask for it. Companies will often pay you less as long as you tolerate it. Dave is a business owner. His viewpoint is totally from that perspective.

I have personally seen people not negotiate their pay when offered a job while others did.its not that persons fault. That’s like if I have developed my own system to be more productive and someone else being upset about my work being completed before they finish there’s. I saw a quote I totally agree with. It read “ if you compete with others you can become bitter but if you compete with yourself you become better “

Many people are not good in negotiating for themself - they may be good doing that for a charity or their company. And if the ability to be self-assertive and being a top negotiator is not part of the job descrption it does not hinder the inexperienced negotiator to bring value. Many people are people-pleaser. They can't negotiate, but they may be good for the company. Would be the task of management to bring some consistency into the issue.

If she does more work than the lazy co-worker, than she does bring more value to the organization. How else would you compare it? Also you're asking an employer (who is not your friend) this question. Ultimately you can only advocate for yourself. If Dave could charge his employees to work there, he probably would.

That assumes she has all the facts. I had a coworker that was reported as lazy because they were leaving during the workday to run errands. turns out the reason she ran them during the day was because the mass spec was dying and she was rebooting it every 90 minutes ALL NIGHT LONG and sleeping in her car in the parking lot. The boss knew, the coworkers did not.

WOW, for the first time ever I am flabbergasted by their response. You can tell that these BUSINESS OWNERS got so defensive when she suggests questioning her compensation. This is the mentality that makes companies prohibit compensation talk in the work place. Why the lack of transparency? This is such an out of the loop response. If she brings more value and works harder she has every right to feel something is off. Either ask for a raise or leave. If nothing shady is going on then talk of compensation should NEVER be an issue.

I'd put this all on Dave. Ken would probably agree with you, if he had a spine. (But then he wouldn't be working with Dave, so there's that).

Except we only see her side. 1. We don't know how long the coworker has been there. 2 She doesn't even know how the company values her as she hasn't said anything about an eval. 3. Most companies do a yearly eval and base raises and compensation off of that. She's only been there 9 months. So her raise may reflect that work when she gets her yearly eval. 4. We don't even know if she's telling the truth.

Their attitude toward employees sharing their salaries concerns me. Of course there are going to be a few people who cause problems with that info, but for the most part the only bad that can come of it is employers having to deal with people negotiating a fair salary. I don't think it's wrong for someone to work for a company for a few years, learn that the new hires are getting paid more than them, and use that information to leverage a raise. And I don't think any employer should be putting their employees in that position to begin with. They know they have to pay people a better starting wage as time goes on, so why don't they think they should raise the wages of current employees at the same rate? They're taking advantage. Now, in this particular case, this person took a job six months ago and the only reason they're not happy now is because the other guy gets more. That's not the same thing.
