Since I bought my boiler 3 years ago I feel that him and I spend alot of time together in the fall cutting and splitting. Neil… I told you those girls were going to become fixtures in your camera crew! You had the perfect mix of tools, help and fellowship for that job. Making memories and firewood in one fell swoop!! I was thinking about your splitter this week. The temperature finally broke to where I could start work on some logs that I had accumulated. All of them were small so wrestling them through Frankensplitter wasn’t really a big deal. But, now I need to start on cleaning up dead oaks in the woods. Most of those have trunks in the 2-3 foot diameter range. Because I’ll be working them up by myself… I’m not looking forward to the wrestling match involved with splitting them. Having the aches, pains and stiffness associated with turning 69… One of those log lifting, elevated vertical splitters sure looks good right about now. LOL I thought about posting a vid about how I process wood but… honestly I’m not sure I want to show just how slow & decrepit I look these days. •LOL• I think I just need a couple of productive days to pull me out of my firewood funk… because I know as you do… the satisfaction of seeing a supply of processed firewood is a cure all for all the aches and pains of making it!!!
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy Год назад
The hardest part is always getting started for me. Once I get rollin it seems like my body comes out of its funk as you say. I'd be tickled to be still splitting and wrestling wood when I'm 69. I think you're most likely better for it as long as you don't overdo it. I know that my dad likes to get out and get some exercise and he's right there with you at 72. But like I said the main thing is keeping him from trying to overdo it. So don't worry about what you look like to me. I think anybody that gets out there and stays active should be commended. Sounds like an excuse to me to put some kind of lifting arm attachment on Frankensplitter. I can't remember if you already had one or not, but maybe you and your buddies can engineer some kind of lift. The weather the last couple days here has really made me start thinking firewood. Nice crisp mornings like this and I can almost smell the fire even when it hasn't been lit! I wish you well and getting out there and getting after it. I know it'll get easier once you get started. Just wish you were a little bit closer and we'd have a demo session on that eastonmade for you!
@sassafrasvalley1939
@sassafrasvalley1939 Год назад
@@digdrivediy That would be awesome… I have probably a hundred dead oaks that need processed. I like to wait about three years after they die before I drop them. Then, they only need a few months to season before it’s ready to burn. There are probably 30 or so that are ‘ripe’ for harvest this year. I’m working on number three this morning. The aches are getting less each day.

Watching the beginning of this epic reminded me of "The Road Warrior" picture. Seeing all this cobbled together machinery rolling across the desolate Indiana wasteland. Karen and the rest of the gals had the right idea, sit in the shade and watch the testosterone cloud form over splitter while a bunch of boys in cosplay gear raged in battle with a veteran, downed tree that provided oxygen, shade and gave nothing but love over the course of it's life. I know it's the Apocalypse, but why are you using a cheap, framing hammer to drive wedges? For the love of all things great and small, get a sledge or at least a maul! Think of the twins. How do you want them to remember Dad? Kara already knows what she bought in to, but the twins are still so impressionable man! Still, it warms my heart to see you reach out and help some of the 180,000 cousins your have. Is it something in the water in Indiana that breeds Koch's? All that aside, you were just truly darling in your "storm trooper" gear! Love home and kiss the girls for me! Stay safe my brother. P.S. I'll save all the name dropping for another post.

@8:41 you introduce your uncle Kenny. Like I mentioned before, I do not recognize him. It has been too long for me.

No problem. Next time I see him I'll ask if he remembers someone riding with him to work.

If you're not a hard worker, then I can certainly agree that boilers are not the way to go!

What kind of chaps,chainsaw pants are you wearing? Don't look as hot as chaps?

They are Stein brand. My brother-in-law gave them to me. I believe he got them from Europe before they were readily available in US a few years ago. They're really nice, but some of the new styles are even less bulky than these. I prefer the pants over the chaps.

You got ripped all your equipment and your labor and didn't get to keep any of the wood.

I ended up with a dump truck load here cause there was more than we expected. I wasn't doing it for the wood though but it was a nice bonus.
