I'm a weekend warrior, jack-of-all-trades, DIY type of guy that has lots of different interests, most of which involve trucks, tractors and heavy equipment. I cut a lot of firewood, move a lot of dirt and tinker on all types of projects in my shop when I have spare time outside my day job. My goal for this channel is to document and share what an average guy could do with equipment that is typically at any local rental place. I want to be able to share my weekend projects with others and for those that share the same passions as me I hope you'll tag along.

Neil, that looks great my friend. My wife and I are building our new house at the moment and will installing stone around the house instead of mulch for many reasons. Less bugs up against the house and mulch not making its way onto the driveway after it rains are probably the two biggest reasons. Happy Father's Day!
If you don't put landscape fabric first, the rocks will slowly sink into the dirt like quicksand. You will end up with some mess combo of rocks and dirt everywhere. You act like landscape fabric is only about weed issues, when it's not. Very bad rookie mistake.
I expect one of the kids to tackle you in! Ha ha! I love this work all of it. I am going to put it to work soon. I am looking to do a pond myself in a year or two.
You fool, the weed barrier is not just about weeds, it's about keeping the rocks from sinking into the dirt and the dirt from coming up over the rocks .
I used to use red shale for landscaping. Perhaps using a liner under the rock is a good idea. I also used a flat shovel to scoop the sod up. . . . on your knees works well. Remember to use knee pads. . . . Guess who just had recently knee replacement surgery? Happy Father's Day.
Happy Father's Day Neil and congrats to your daughter's softball team. In CT we have a problem with mulch where we get a spore fungus that attaches to the siding. I basically hate bark mulch now but haven't pulled the trigger on getting the stone for the gardens. Instead, I weed a lot and try to fill in the spots in the beds with ground cover and other plants. But seeing this video brings that idea back up... thanks!
I've gone from black mulch to wood chips.. 30 yards is alot of mulch to keep clean. 3/4 inch stone As buffer along back of my house and certain areas near the driveway and Skirt around the shed, seems to be a great idea to me.. use crew granular herbicide to prevent broadlead and grassy weeds
Looks good… it’s kinda funny to watch as we are pulling all our Rocks out and putting in Mulch… dark mulch… lol we found with the plants we have around our house, the rock was burning all the plants from the reflection of the sun. Our edges don’t look anything as perfect as yours tho. lol
I used black recycled rubber edging and black recycled rubber mulch. It looks great and s guaranteed to remain color fast for ten years. I used rolled roofing as a weed barrier and that works great. Sticks, twigs, and leaves will always be a problem regardless what you use. The rock does look great too.
Just wanted you all to know what a great segment this was! The whole family working together and all. Great job on the rock, it looks great! You never cease to amaze me! Love your show!
You could have used a manual sod cutter...a kicker. It's a handy tool. Great for skimming the bare earth too. Better than being on your knees with a shovel.
From one Koch to another. Your Koch family is much like my Darwin H. Koch Dairy farmers from Campbelsport Wisconsin. My wife and I stopped using mulch around our house many year's ago. Research of mulch proved rock was a much better material. Mulch stays wet after rain and attracts roaches and many ants. Stone retains it heat and bugs prefer wet mulch
Your property always looks wonderful no matter what products you use 🤗 I think the rock looked great before and after watering it 👍 Lots of hard work 🥵 but it always shows. You're a great teacher with the girls and they're great at listening and following instructions 💜🩷. Happy Father's day 💙
