Up to a certain point the farytales helped me (7) to deal with the death of my Opa. He loved picking mushrooms in the nearby forest. I saw him some hours before he died, walking into the woods. He looked at us kids playing, waved and off he went, forever...... Sometimes i ask myself, if he, somehow, knew it was not a "hi kids"👋, but a "goodbye"👋? 🤷 Maybe we meet again?🥲 Somewhere out there.🌌 Who knows?.... Tschau

Hi Lauren, thank you for taking us along to the northern coast of Germany. I had no idea that they have a hange made of stone in that area, I think that is super interesting. As usual, your videos are not just packed with beautiful scenery, but are also quite educational. They cover the arts, folklore, history and even talk of archeological finds. Rügen is so wonderful when you walk outside the „big“ cities. I highly recommend a ride with the „Rasender Roland“ and a visit at Jagdschloss Granitz. Or visit the nearby isle of Hiddensee.

Fairy tales are simply part of Europe and despite the sometimes dense population, there are many places of the old fairy tales that can still be found, many landscapes with the associated lakes, mountains, forests, old castle's and clearings stimulate the imagination and create a certain atmosphere. The East of Germany is clear less populated and therefore leaves more space for nature, the rivers and lake landscapes of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg are simply beautiful, perfect for exploring with a camper.

Struwwelpeter was also written to scare kids and return them on the right way...🤔🤣

Yes, Grimm's fairy tales - I grew up listening to them some 60 years ago... Keep in mind that they were actually not authored by the Grimm brothers, but collected on trips throughout the country. So they represent probably decades, if not centuries of development in the "collective mind" of the people. And yes, times were rough back then, and it probably was wise to introduce already small children to the harsher aspects of life, i.e. not everybody is your friend, and it doesn't hurt to be smart, and so on. Now the standard ending "Und wenn sie nicht gestorben sind, dann leben sie noch heute" was, at least to me as a kid, never that scary. Usually, in the end, the good had triumphed over the evil, and everybody was happy. After the standard beginning of a fairy tale "Es war einmal..." ("Once upon a time") this ending leaves a slight possibility that the story had taken place not so far back in the past, after all... By the way, I think even in the English culture not everything for kids was kid-friendly by today's standards. I think there is a prayer that children were supposed to say before going to sleep, which contains the lines: "I pray to God my soul to take, if I should die before I wake" (or something relatively similar) Yikes! Try going to sleep with the fear of not waking up any more... that I find even scarier than that fairy-tale ending! But great video, thanks!

If I'm not mistaken a 'Hünengrab' is a grave for the Vikings. For more Viking history, Haitabu in Schleswig - Holstein is the right adress. And I think, if you feel uncomfortable in Germany it's more about your mindset and where you live in Germany .

The interesting thing is that the brothers Grimm allready softend the farytales they collected. Before that most of them where brutal and sometimes bloody horror stories and not for children. They where stories to keep the adults on track.

The Celts were very influential in the region of continental Europe that today is covered by Germany, France, Czech, Hungary, Austria, all of the Balkans. The territory where they could be found stretched over a huge area. From the Himmelsscheibe of Nebra / the sky disc of Nebra we know for certain that trade was fairly common among the many regions of the Celtic influence. This disc was an archaeological highlight when it was found. The story about its find, its theft, and its recovery would easily lend itsself to a treasure hunt movie. What is so interesting is that we can analyze today where the different materials, including metals, it was created from originated. Some parts came from the British Islands, very probably even from Wales, others came from a mine on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, again others from mines in the Erzgebirge in today eastern Germany. It was tinkered with several times during its existence but separated by several centuries. So it shows that this sky disc, a quasi calendar and location device for specific star formations, was in use by the Celtic tribes of the area for multiple centuries. This shows how incredibly far reaching the Celtic influence was over 5000 years ago. So it is no wonder you as a 'Welsh Celtic girl' feel so welcome in these areas.

Rügen is also the location of the „Schwarzer See“ (black lake) where historians think that it was a holy sight for the Germanic people and a place for human sacrificie

I visited the Visbeker Bräutigam, the Brautwagen and the Heidenopfertisch, and they are amazing. If you want moss, visit the Lindenstumpf near Schondra in the Bavarian Kuppenrhön in summer, it is located close to the A7. Enjoy the moss-covered ground which I noticed roughly a decade ago.

In former, let`s say, ancient times children sat around the fire together with the adults and listen to the myths and stories they were telling. Some resurchers believe that there might not have been stories especially for little children during that time. Thousands of years ago ife was rough and hard and sometimes dangerous, so life could be short and children had not much time to learn what there was to know about the world, people, Gods and nature. What the Grimm Brothers collected were "Volksmärchen" especially around Hessen in the middle of Germany. They visited hostels and inns, waited for travelors and aked them about what tales they knew. Many of these Volksmärchen (there are also "Kunstmärchen", these were new stories, created and written by authors of that time, not handed down by ancestors) are said to have much older roots, maybe from neolithic period, and were but translated again and again into later times and by time made fitting into a more modern era and culture. And yes, in former centuries, especially the 1800s, many of them were used to frighten children, but the much earlier versions weren`t children`s fairytales but tales adults told others, they were nothing else than stories of life and death, heaven and earth, fire and water, mystic and real world. That`s what life always was and is today - many of us are simply quite privileged to not have so very much dark, sad, cruel or dramatic topics in their life. These fairytales are full to the brim with metaphores and images of what the "usual" and spiritual world contains, and metaphores are quite often "exaggerated" to impress more and make very clear what is meant behind the picture. So many Volksmärchen and Mythen are a kind of story which - because of their age and much earlier roots which sometimes disappear into the mists of stoneage times - are nothing else than a very old web of story which is filled again and again with fitting pictures and details to transport something very old and some newer things, depending on the area and time where/when they are told. In the long history of telling tales it is quite a new and modern thing to make them fit especially for children. When industrialization started in the 1700s where many of the Grimm tales like we know them today where told, there wasn`t even such thing as "childhood" and children were seen als "people with smaller body which will grow", we see it in the way children were forced to work in early factories, in the fields, on the street or in the mines. That`s the time when much earlier fairytales became quite popular, and they put some things of their dayly life and culture in. Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern" tells of a time where women and girls worked in the dangerous match factories poisoning themselves - or sold matches in the streets. It had been put in, but there is a much more ancient root to that and many other tales. There are some very interesting traces to where some of the older parts and details or topics of some fairytales lead or how much of it indeed once had a real underground. We must see such old tales and content from a much older perspective and view - they origin in times where they weren`t used to be children`s tales to "educate" children in a quite brutal way; once they were tales to entertain adults and at the same time carry real content from former times and cultures and sometimes also belief: Giants and witches, gnomes and fairies, talking animals of the forest and good or bad sorcerers with their spells and magic objects find their origin in ancient times and cultures but not in the middle ages, Renaissance or much later. So the fact that there seem to be "Grimm versions" also in eastern European countries, the British Isles, Rusia or Skandinavia might not only mean that the fairytales which the Grimm Brothers did collect were so very popular - there might have been some very old and ancient basics of some tales everywhere on the continent, at the same time and for thousands of years. Sorry for so much text, but this topic is so very fascinating! As your videos are, each and everyone of them! You do inspire so very much with your way to tell these stories of ancient and more modern content, together with showing landscapes and places in such wonderful cinematic quality, thank you so very much for your work!! 🥰❤ This really is for heart and soul, but you also give me so much inspiration for stories and tales! the fairytales were never meant for children, they are mytholigical tales, some based on real life back in the days. those were horrorstories from adults and for adults, when electricity and books werent not existing thousands of years back, to entertain themselves. oral tradition was strong , since first "ghost stories" in human history ever, esp in mesopotamia, just like the old folklore about Baalan yahwe, who later even made it to the old testament, lol. the words märchen and nightmare are similar.

Yeah, lots of Grims fairy tales are dark origin and were made for adults and not all grims fariy tales are 100% german, but some are still good like the cat wit the shoes, which is not german fairy tale or the Heinzelmännchen zu Köln which is german origin or Frau Holle is also good or Tischlein deck dich or Knüppel aus dem Sack.
