Quick upshift to third may have been set that way to improve gas mileage. They tried everything in the 70s to save gas. Nice car in a great 70s color. Much better than the Escapade.

You definitely got the better end of the deal! My parents bought a '75 Newport Custom brand new with a 400 4bbl. It was a great car. Then my Dad went one step further and traded for a brand new '77 Newport custom with the infamously horrible lean burn setup and had nothing but trouble with it. Boy did he regret getting rid of the 75!

I think it was a great deal, I owned a 75 4 door Newport years ago. It is like sitting on your couch as you drive down the road, the front area was so big there was a separate ash tray on the passenger side. Your particular car does have additional value as its a surviving 2 door and most Newports didn't come with a 440, only a 400.

Dude you made the best trade ever - 70s MOPARs are so iconic; this one's pre-Lean Burn, so even better! Just keep a spare ballast resister in the glove box, set aside a few hours for the awkward 440 wire changes and you're good to go! This is also very well optioned for a Newport with the premium vinyl seats, power windows, A/C. Just awesome. EDIT: I'd check with the former owner about the originality of the engine...that looks suspiciously like an unlabeled Lean Burn canister attached to the air cleaner, which would literally be impossible for a 1975 motor.
@junkyardjoe1994
@junkyardjoe1994 Год назад

@tonypoore440

If it's lean burn the distributor will not have a vacuum advance can and hose. It may have had a conversion kit put on it that removes the lean burn distributor and ECU, and replaces them with standard Chrysler electronic ignition parts.

So many people talk about spate ballast resistors on Chryslers. My family owned about 5 Chryslers of the 60s and 70s over a span of 30 years and never once did a ballast resistor go bad. We were in Southern California so maybe it’s a rainfall/humidity issue? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@junkyardjoe1994 , I'm not the "mechanic" anyway and Idk anything about these cars to start with but is it me or does it appear that someone flipped the breather lid to try to make this presumably non-original breather work on the car... I'm guessing that if it's not the right one it probably wobbles so they flipped the lid.... You know what, I was just thinking about a '70's Dodge Diplomat my dad had before he died. They said it had a 318 so I just did a quick search and the breather looks very much like that one, so did someone just use the breather from a 318, Idk... It might be tricky but you could always try to get the block code off of the engine, it's said to be "a seven digit raised number on the driver's side of the engine". Then just use an online decoder to ID it. Btw, I think it's a pretty nice ride and as far as "sleeping in the dog house" well just sleep in the car, you said the seats are like being in a recliner!😄

I loved it, one of my favorites. I'd tune that up, rebuild the carb, get some new shocks, sort the electrics and drive the crap out of it. The Newport is nothing less than the New Yorker that year (just usually a lower optioned car for lower price). I used to work at a Chrysler Plymouth dealer in my hometown in 75-77ish, and we got a few four doors (Newport) and maybe one or two two door models (smaller dealership then) of course along with many New Yorkers of that era. The two door version you acquired, you just don't see too many anymore, so I think, in that condition, you didn't make a bad deal. Hopefully the radio, wipers, blower, are just a blown fuse or missing fuse(s). If there's no rust underneath and in the body, it'll be worth getting it 100% and won't be so hard to do. Oh, new watcher here today!

I had a very similar 77 Newport. My biggest problem was rust. I tired for years to keep it clean, but it just didn't want to live. Your trunk looks pretty good, the floor behind the wheels can be a major rust spot. It looks like your trunk lid is going, again a common rust spot. The smell is probably at least partially cigarette smoke. Old leather also tends to develop a distinct smell, which is unpleasant. It looks like it has the lean burn system, controlled by the rectangular module on the side of the air cleaner. There's supposed to be a vacuum line attached to this to provide spark advance. These modules would often go out and leave me stranded. I would keep some spares in the car with me. When the engine cut out, I'd pull to the side fo the road and switch the module. The modules wouldn't completely die, after a while, they would work again, so I would just rotate them around. The window motors had a replaceable clutch that would slip and not move the window. If it's the clutch that needs replacing, you should still be able to hear the motor whirring in the door. With any luck, you can still get the clutch for the motor. They aren't too difficult to replace, just watch out for the regulator spring. It's very powerful to hold up that heavy window, and if it lets go suddenly, (as I let it do once), I'm sure it could take a finger off easily. I averaged 13 mpg with mine, although it had the 400 motor, not the 440.
@junkyardjoe1994

It's a beautiful car. The one thing I noticed is that the quality of materials used in this geneation of Chrysler, with the exception of the seats, is a pretty sub-par. Compared to a Mercury Marquis or even an LTD, this Chrysler pales in comparison. It just looks cheap and uses way too much plastic. So sad because it is definitely a looker, especially in darker colors. One of my favorite cars is a 1974/75 Imperial, which uses the same body with Imperial specific body panels. Imperial utilized a similar dash but modular in design.

Hi, I have so many questions about this Newport and most of them will be impossible to answer. First off, I have to admit to a long term fascination with the 'poor man's Chrysler' which I remember from my childhood in the 60s and 70s. As a fully loaded Newport, I wonder whether it was a factory order by an individual who simply wanted their Newport to be more expensive than a New Yorker or whether it was a flub by a dealer who ended up selling it for a big discount. I am also interested in what motivated the buyer to choose a Newport in 1975 over a fully loaded Dodge Monaco or Plymouth Fury. Could you get a better deal on a Newport? Was it a minor status symbol for fans of Chrysler Corporation? As an aside, a recent video on Steve Magnante's Junkyard Crawl channel revealed some B pillars of full size Chrysler coupe's from this era were made of fiberglass not steel.
@junkyardjoe1994
@junkyardjoe1994 Год назад
Well I have no real answers as to why someone got a fully loaded newport. Perhaps it was a bit cheaper or maybe they had driven newports for years and liked something particular about them. It's certainly an odd duck. I think it might be somewhat rare just how it's built. Neat car that's for sure
@rightlanehog3151
@rightlanehog3151 Год назад
@@junkyardjoe1994 Thanks for taking the time to reply. Maybe they bought a Newport because they wanted to keep a lower profile than those who drove a fancy New Yorker or Imperial. 48 years after the decision was made, we may never obtain a satisfactory answer. 🤔
