Aldi have been impressing me with their kitchen gadgets recently - you might remember we discovered the amazing fryer for £10 from them and a company called Ambiano. Sure it's not top quality, but they seem to work. So i've got hold of some more of their stuff to put to the test, this time it's a machine that fries the food on a circular hot plate, grills it underneath the same element to double up as a raclette for cheese covered goodness, then it's got a separate pot for warming fondue cheese or making chocolate fountains! This isn't sponsored but I really liked this brand, so maybe next time when you pop into Aldi for some milk, grab a fondue machine as you do lol

In the Netherlands we call this a Gourmet set. Cooking and eating like this (Gourmetten) with the family is really popular tradition here with the holidays. Yes, with the wood spatula's .Grocery stores here sell miniature meat in all kinds of shapes. Usually we do'nt have a fondue on top though. We do make little pancakes and eggs in the small pans. A dinner like this usually takes hours and hours. Just one little piece of meat at the time. Each person his or her own little pan.

Normally with a raclette, the bits of meat and veg cook on the top, and the cheese is melted underneath and when you plate up your potatoes and meat you pour over the cheese.

Barrie, the Raclette dishes are meant for melting the very specific Raclette cheese from Canton Valais. The hot plate is for the meat, mushrooms etc. also, the pot is meant either for oil (for cooking meat in a fondue Bourgignonne) or for a mixture of Emmental and Gruyère cheese with kirsch and Fendant wine. It’s possible to buy ready mixed cheese fondue and Raclette cheese in UK supermarkets under the Emmi brand.

In the Netherlands often people will use a raclette grill (without the fondue bit lol) at Christmas or New Years and use it to grill tiny versions of meats (think mini cordon bleus, mini steaks, mini bratwursts) and often veggies and potatoes aswell. I've used a fondue set a couple of times when I was visiting friends and their parents busted them out. Thing is, it's really a social piece more than anything. Because honestly, between the heating time and clean up, it's kind of a pain overall. In both instances, I think I only ever saw them bring it out again on one occasion before it ended up at the back of drawer.

You don't eat off the fondue fork. You should have a little plate to put the stuff from the fondue fork on to, though with the chocolate it will probably be cool enough to not burn you. Also, as my wife has made dozens of chocolate fondues, do exactly what you think and add some cream to it. Maybe blend up some speculoos or graham crackers if you want to be extra fancy or want some texture.

I'm more used to the oil than the cheese version of a fondue TBH, it's great if you use use slightly smaller cubes of meat and dip them in a glaze first. The heat sears it in place so it doesn't contaminate the oil so you can have half a dozen varieties and people pick the ones they want. Personally I'm a big fan of mustard glazed beef, done just long enough to sear the outside so the inside is nice and rare with the added benefit that the pieces are small enough that none of it has the opportunity to go cold before it get eaten :)

As Atomic Shrimp would say: "Cheesy napalm!" Fondue sets were a big thing in the early 1970's, I remember. Often seen as prizes on TV game shows. When I was clearing stuff in the house out after my mum died, I found a Fondue set at the back of a cupboard. It looked to me like it had never been used. Odd, as both mum and dad loved cheese. And a tiny bit sad, now I come to think about it.

@@SombreroPharoah - sadly, I donated it to a local charity shop. Now here's the thing - cheese is possibly my favourite food of all - but I'm not keen on it hot. The only exception is a proper Welsh Rarebit, made with really strong cheese, wholegrain Mustard, beer, and Worcestershire sauce. It's the only thing I like using hot cheese. And, to pre-empt anyone, no, I'm not keen on pizza. Used to be, but got bored of it. It's an age thing, I think - I find nowadays that most sweet things are too sweet to be pleasant, anymore. I don't eat very spicy food either, as I like to taste the food, not the spices it's drowned in. Herby, and garlicky are all good.

You should read up on traditional Swiss beef fondue. You do indeed cook the beef cubes in hot oil to your desired doneness and then dip the cooked beef into any one of several sauces (many versions online). But first, after cooking, you switch the beef cube to another larger (and cooler) dinner fork before eating it so you don't burn your mouth with the sizzling hot fondue fork. I lived in Lausanne for a number of years and beef fondue remains one of my favorite dishes from that time.

Good stuff Mr Lewis, a cracker of a video as always. I have a raclette grill that has two cooking surfaces, one of which is a stone. It's fantastic, and the meals you can make on these things are delicious, great for a gathering of friends, however it's large and inconvenient and cumbersome when you live in an apartment, and it's also a lot of work to clean, particularly because of the stone half, which holds onto that heat for a long time, and you need to wait for it to cool down for as much as a few hours after you've finished cooking before you can handle it, so I sadly don't use it as often as I would like.

My parents lived in Germany for several years before I was born. They fell in love with raclette and brought a traditional stove home with them. Almost every Christmas, birthday, or big celebration we’d have raclette. Traditionally, Raclette usually includes some sort of meat, typically bacon, and raclette cheese and I think pickles? You pour the melted cheese/bacon/pickles over a boiled potato. My mom, however, Americanized it, and we would have a tray of all kinds of cheeses, another tray of pickles, pineapple, onions, bacon, mushrooms. We’d then pour it over petite boiled red potatoes (or, if you were a picky child like me, eat without a potato 😂). Super fun to see you feature a raclette cooker. Brings back memories ❤

Here in Germany we have Raclette cheese which you can buy for doing raclette. I have to say I have had raclette twice at other people's houses and it felt very fiddly both times loading the pans, cooking the items, loading the cheese and then grilling it. It is an evening dinner party device which like coffee percolators I associate with the 1970s LOL

Also I think the liquid in the fondu makes the cheesy liquid easier to manage. Pure cheese is too stringy you want more like a cheese sauce.

I think the 'steep' supermarket sells the real Raclette cheese. It's worth trying the real thing. I remember being charmed by a Raclette machine when staying with family in Switzerland as a child. When visiting as an adult they had swapped to the more traditional version where you get a wedge of Raclette and blast it with heat on one face and then scrape the melted bit off onto the boiled potatoes. Must be eaten with cornichons and pickled onions, and wine or hot tea (because cold soft drinks with the cheese will apparently cause indigestion...). It's so popular that they even have Raclette cheese vending machines so people going out to stay in the mountains for the weekend can buy their cheese at any hour of the day!

It sucks that they only made one of these otherwise you could give this one away and then buy one for personal use 😕

I am 100% the same when it comes to cheese. If it's in it's solid state, I could give or take it. But melty and especially crispy? I'll eat it all.

Raclettes are very popular in Quebec Canada. We have dinner parties with full course meals and later dessert. Each person cooks their meal from food plates on the table. You pick what you want to eat. Ours are long not round and heated by flame.

@13:20 This is what i think when you talk about Fondue. Usually you do not use just plain oil. But herb infused oil, Think of sunflower oil, Corn oil, grape seed oil(?) infused with thyme, bay leaf and rosemary.... you you can buy the mix in a bottle (you will have to fish out or sift out the herbs from the oil in the bottle)... this tastes much better than just oil.

I think I've only ever had fondue like once or twice when I was kid. I don't really know that much about it tbh. It looks delicious though. And from what I remember what I had as a kid was pretty good.

In my family fondue meant various bite sized things (like bread, steak, hot dogs, etc) cooked by the individual in hot oil.

Another great video Barry! Made me think the fun I could have with one of these. I'd probably end up making a lot of chocolatey and cheesey concoctions. Not the two together though I don't think

I love chocolate fondue, but I honestly love a nice savory fondue even more.

There's a chain of restaurants here in the states that do fondue, and it's always a good time to go to them. Expensive, though. Like... easily a hundred plus dollar evening. Per person.
