I Tried a BUDGET River Cruise and It Wasn't What I Expected

I’ve just disembarked a European river cruise on a cruise line that cost around 1/3rd of most other river cruise lines, it was a very eventful cruise in lots of ways and a few very odd things did happen.
While I was looking at Christmas cruises recently (yep Christmas, it actually isn't very far away) I came across some veeeeery affordable Christmas market river cruises. 😁😊
They're literally half the price of other river cruise lines. If you're interested in the Christmas River cruises, you'll find those here: tui-uk.7cnq.net/eKE10X (Affiliate link). 🎄🙂
Normally if you want to take a European river cruise you’re looking at £300, £400 pounds per night. Some cost £1000 per night but I paid less than that for an entire week, including flights, cruising on the Danube with TUI staying in a superior balcony cabin.
Check out TUI river cruises here: tui-uk.7cnq.net/ZdvRER (affiliate link)
I’ve taken river cruises in the past on the more luxurious lines but when TUI announced that they were starting river cruising I hoped that TUI would be the answer to river cruising on a budget.

@@kevinwylde4737 - of the three companies we travelled with Amawaterways was definitely the pick. There are no absolute guarantees in life but we just found them to be better organised, a real sense of friendliness and extremely good cruise directors each time. Their ships have a better feel - not too much “shiny finishes and metal edges” while at the same time being modern and comfortable. We have been on both ocean cruises to NZ and in Europe and river cruises on the Rhine and Danube. The river cruises are more expensive per day but all excursions are included and it is a very different feel to an ocean cruise.

I've never had any interest in an ocean cruise -- it's basically a big floating resort, and I'd much rather go to an actual resort at that point -- but river cruising has always been tempting. So many European cities and towns grew up around rivers, so you dock in the heart of the city and explore on foot, without having to struggle to the train station every time you travel to a new town. Your videos are really helpful and entertaining!

In the US and Canada, coriander refers to the seeds and cilantro to the leaves. Elsewhere the whole plant is called coriander. There are no different names for the various parts of the plant. Cilantro is the Spanish word for coriander, it became the common term in American English for coriander leaves, due to its extensive use as an herb in Mexican recipes. But as the previous poster noted, “coriander” is used in American English as well referring to the seeds when used as a spice.

Quick fix for glass bathroom walls: Buy a newspaper, borrow scotch tape, and cover exterior glass walls up to neck height with paper. I did this on my bedroom windows at the house I was temporarily living in -- but used bleached packing paper that I got from GSO office at the Oslo U.S. Embassy. You still got in filtered light, but no one could see in. It was perfect, and almost zero cost or time to accomplish. Plus, it looked very nice from outside.

Awesome video Emma! I’ve been quite interested to hear about a “budget” river trip. It sounds like, aside from being frozen and having a bit of a peep 😉, you had a great time. I’ve done several Danube trips and even in the summer they are cooler than expected. It sounds like you would take another Tui cruise, based on a value proposition alone. You are spot on about motion sickness not being an issue. However, the bus excursions get to me so I always wear a scopolamine patch when cruising. Thanks again for sharing your trips with us. Hugs from the US.

Thanks for the review, I was on the Tui Maya at the same time as you and found a lot of the same things especially the static shocks! I always got them from the banister in the atrium. Totally agree with your comments on the bathroom door as well! We are a mid 30s and were the youngest couple on our cruise however we didn't feel massively out of place, everyone was very friendly. We did find the cruise a bit boring at times but there may have been down to our itinerary which visited some very small but picturesque towns along the moselle river.

I have been on a few river cruises in Europe and this is the first time I have heard of this cruise line but I really do not see anything wrong with their ships. They look nice and I love that little remark about ships docking just outside your window. I have gotten into the habit of 'peeking out' from behind the curtains first thing in the morning instead of boldly opening the curtains and saying ...TADA....Great video...thanks

The "low bridge" experience is so cool. Earlier this year I was on the Iona in Lisbon and when we set sail we went under the bridge that looks like the Golden Gate bridge and we were told there was only 3-5 metres clearance. There was a lot of people on the top deck to experience this.

You should be a truck driver, then! Yesterday outside Salisbury (UK) I took my wagon at 13"0' under a bridge marked 13"3'... so that's 3 inches to spare... or 7.5cm... and loads of people watching, anyway, it's enough... for some reason I was holding my breath though i don't know why..

@@Paul-dv4dr I am not a truck driver but here in the US, there been plenty of videos of truckers trying to get under a bridge that says something like 13' and they lose the top part or all of their payload because they were around 13'6". Worst part is, many of the videos have them in large cities which causes traffic jams with the fallen cargo.

Emma, enjoyed the review of your Danube river cruise. We did it from Passau to Budapest and back last September with a swiss company (we live in Switzerland) and everything you talked about brought back so many fun memories. I love river cruising as the passenger numbers are so low and you do „get to know“ all the others - maybe just a smile and a Hi, but still. We also saw tons of Viking ships - everywhere! However they are VERY expensive. My biggest negative about this particular route was that we did all the available excursions and so missed out on alot of the actual „cruising“ - or - the ship did the cruising in the night. We did, with the same swiss company, the Duoro river in Portual in 2020 (HIGHLY recommend!!!) and there they only offered one half-day excursion each day and then the other half was spent cruising to the next stop - loved that! And the scenery on the Duoro is STUNNING!!!! I would like to do a Basel, Switzerland-Amersterdam and back for my next one.

The Douro is my dream 😍
@DavidWood2
@DavidWood2 2 года назад
The emphasis on river cruising is always on the port stops. This means that much of the cruising is at night though, as you note, it does depend on the river. Douro cruising is often daytime, and the Moselle, which is also very picturesque, often has a fair bit of day cruising. Other exceptions are especially picturesque sections of the Danube (the Wachau Valley that Emma cruised through on this cruise) and the Middle Rhine between Koblenz and Rudesheim am Rhein. Departure from Budapest is often at night, so you can enjoy the lights of the city. On the Viking cruise, I have just returned from, we had an after-dinner cruise of the Port of Rotterdam. As you also say, it is common for the ship to cruise onwards whilst you are on an excursion. I tend to look at river cruises as rather like a bus tour where you stay in a mobile hotel rather than changing accommodation each night. I doubt you would go from Basel to Amsterdam and back in a single cruise - usually you go one way, which takes around a week. Even TUI, which mostly offers round trip river cruises, does Basel to Amsterdam as a one-way itinerary (Rhine Explorer 2). I have done Amsterdam to Basel with Viking (Rhine Getaway) and the Koblenz to Basel section of the Rhine again with Viking on a different itinerary (Paris to the Swiss Alps). Most of the cruising on the Rhine, other than the section from Koblenz to Rudesheim, is likely to be at night, as there are large distances to be covered between each stop and they want to give you the maximum time at each port stop.

In the USA cilantro is also known as Chinese parsley, and the seeds (which are then dried and ground up) the plant produces are coriander, which is used as a spice. It's also quite easy to grow (at least for me).

This looks fun! Although even the budget one seems quite expensive to me. We call it cilantro because that's the Spanish word for it, btw - it's because of how close we are to Mexico (and how much Mexican food influences American food!)

I'm part German and my wife is Polish and Czech, so we have been talking about doing a European river cruise to visit those countries, but river cruises are advertised in the US as costing $4,000 - $6,000 per person which is way beyond our budget. Thanks for sharing a summary of your experiences on this cruise. Considering the total cost compared to other river cruises, it seems like a very good value. Regarding privacy issues with the translucent glass, it seems that you could hang a sheet in front of the bathroom using strong magnets on the ceiling to create a temporary partition. It would be better if the glass was not translucent but there are a few options to make it less revealing while staying in the cabin I suppose.

The glass walled bathroom issue is funny. Reminds me of a boutique hotel in Shanghai I stayed at, the bathroom was fully walled on two sides with completely clear glass, not even frosted. There was no separate area with the toilet, so anyone using that was in full view. I don't care if you're on your honeymoon, I agree that no one wants to see that. And if you're with someone not your significant other? You definitely need to make the other person leave the room each time you use it.

Yes, I stayed in a hotel in Beijing with a glass wall separating the beds and the bathroom. Thd wall wa somwhat frosted like on this cruise but still you could see everything clearly enough. It was very uncomfortable as I was sharing with a friend. I wasn't totally caught off guard thomas I read a travel article about a trip to China and this possibility was mentioned. When I saw it I was like, nooooooo.

This is great information. I have not wanted to take an ocean cruise because Idon't want to be on a ship with 3000 other people. But I could enjoy this boat with only 150 or less people. However, I am in the US so to add airfare would make the trip too expensive. I would love the scenery of passing villages and taking foot tours at docking. I may have to save up for this!

The frosted bathroom doors is absolutely wild to me. Who thinks that’s a good idea? Visually and audibly. And no locks either? My dad does a lot of river cruises with his bike group and people often bunk up to down the cost, I can’t imagine having to figure that out. Were there any “public” bathrooms on that cruise ship?

I think its still okay with a good friend, its whatever, like gym or swimming pool showers. But if genders are mixed and the people involved are not already a couple i feel it'll easily get weird and awkward and wrong.

The Mississippi River does have paddleboat cruises on it. Some towns worth stopping at in my area, would be LeClaire, Iowa and Dubuque, Iowa. And, while you're cruising, do a stop over in Clinton, Iowa, and drive the beautiful country roads of Hwy 136 West out of Clinton, and return on the Old Lincoln Highway, approx 6 miles S. The indiginous Woodlands Indians named their land Iowa, for beautiful, and the rich rolling farmland and vistas prove them right! e@@jasonsumma1530
