My review of the Tovala Smart Oven....is it worth the price tag? Who should buy this and who should not? #TovalaTime @tovalafood
Disclaimer: As I mentioned in this video, Tovala sent me this oven and paid me for my time to make this video. However, all opinions are my own, and I was free to share both pros and cons that I experienced trying out the product.

Excellent and very detailed and honest review. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and I love it. But I fit the exact profile this thing is designed for, additionally I am a handicapped wheelchair user and this makes cooking my own tasty meals a breeze.

To your mention that the protein portion falls out of the box: Another reviewer says the protein/meat is kept closer to the ice packs than the rest of the ingredients. From her description, it seemed to me that the protein is not inside the box to begin with, but I can't be sure. Also, I've received an email with a Memorial Day offer to get this oven for just $49. Not sure if that's only with the meal plan; thanks to your review I now know I don't have an extra electrical plug that I can dedicate to this appliance. Thanks for your honest review!

I DID watch a Tovola video that States you can cook 2 meals at the same time, all 4 trays. The ONLY requirement is that each meal has to be the "same, identical meal." I believe in your review that you stated only 2 trays could be in the oven at a time. Just saying... I'm ordering my oven, so I'll be watching for more of your informational videos! Thankx

Which model did you have? Because if you use the second generation, it’s a little bit smaller on the outside. Otherwise, I completely agree with your assessment, although I have yet to receive my meals yet. But I think it might’ve been worth your while to discuss other aspects of it like how easy it is to clean, did you try other food besides the meal kit, that sort of thing. Personally, I find that the smooth interior and exterior really do make it a lot easier to clean. Still, I’m curious about how well it can bake some thing like cookies or even a pan of brownies.

Is there a meal delivery system that you would recommend for two people that is better but similar to Tovala? I don't want to cook anymore on most nights but I don't want frozen or microwave food. I want us to eat good food and watch our portions. Thanks!

Thanks for your review! Regarding the nutritional info of the sides, when you look at the meals on the Tovala website it says they only exclude the "optional" toppings/sides from the nutritional information. Otherwise, it includes the sides/toppings that are strictly part of the meal. At least that's what I understood from it.
@MissSarahEK
@MissSarahEK 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment 😊. And yep! I believe they only exclude the “optional” toppings. I think they should include them though since it seems like a way for them to show lower calorie counts in my option 🙃

@@MissSarahEK Exactly, I agree. I've been on the fence for Tovala and its meal service, but your idea of splitting the meal and adding your own third item was great and may push me towards getting one. Because otherwise I love the idea behind Tovala and the potential time saving you get from not having to cook. I also realized that most of their meals contain very high amounts of sodium, so that may be something people need to consider as well. However, we were able to find enough meals that we'd choose that weren't too high on sodium, if we were to start the service. Thanks again!

Do I need to have it wifi connected to use it? Can't I just scan or press the buttons on the oven? Can you manually set cook functions/times? Are the portion sizes listed? Are the meal tins reusable? Can I use my own baking tins in the oven? Would it be worth getting to make my own meals?
@MissSarahEK
@MissSarahEK 2 года назад
Hi! Wifi is required for some of the features (e.g. syncing with the app for notifications), but you can you still use the basic cook functions without wifi (I'm not sure about the scanning feature). And yes you can manually set the cook time! I believe the portion sizes are listed on the packaging, but I don't remember for sure (I believe that would be part of the nutrition facts). The meal tins seem like they are meant to be single-use, but if you cleaned them out, you could probably get away with using them multiple times. Personally I'm not using the meal delivery service currently, but I still use the Tovala regularly for making my own meals (I also use it as a toaster). The "specialness" of the product though is really the integration with the scanning feature and the meal delivery service. I would say if you plan to use those features or subscribe to the meal service, it's worth getting. If you aren't going to use the scan feature or meal delivery service, it's probably not worth it IMO.

Hi! Thanks for commenting 😊. I think the main difference is the scan to cook feature which is new (to me at least 😅). Agree it is pretty similar to a toaster oven though!

I think another big difference is the steaming aspect of it (although there are newer toaster ovens with steaming options). It definitely improves function and quality. As mentioned, the fact that it can scan hundreds of QR codes from standard grocery items is more useful (and cooler) than I thought it would be:) The app is also super informative and helpful. Love that I can use it to make a nice meal for myself as well as use as a "back-up oven" when cooking for a group.

How do you get paid for this? This is a horrible review. You almost act like you did this review spontaneously and didn't have any time to prepare or rehearse lol. The max temperature for 99% of ovens is 550 degrees, not 600 degrees, unless the oven is cleaning itself. But people don't typically cook at temps that high. Hell, the max temp for Pyrex glassware is only 425 degrees. I get that this is a review and you aren't a spokesperson for them, but you did a bad job describing the oven. It's the size of a microwave but more powerful than a toaster oven. And there's a reason for the door to not be hinge-locked, because if some dumb person leaned on it, pushed it too hard, set something too heavy on it when it was open, then they could break it. So why do it? You aren't supposed to fling the door open to the point where it hits the countertop hard. Also, making the claim that it's really for people who "can afford it" is kind of wrong. It's accessible to a wide range of people thanks to things like Affirm payment plans, and other payment options like Klarna. Did you even mention the fact that the oven is only $300 if you AREN'T subscribing to their meal plans? If you actually WANT the meal delivery service with it then the oven is only $100. Maybe it was a bit more expensive 8 months ago, but today it's only $99 with 6 weeks of meals ordered within a 6 month period. Since you review things, here's my review of your review. 4 out of 10. You're getting this stuff for FREE and getting PAID for your time? Oh, AND collecting ad revenue? This is basically a job. Do your damn job.
@MissSarahEK
@MissSarahEK 2 года назад
Hey Ryan - I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy my review and you think I did a bad job. I'm not sure what of your feedback will be actionable for any future videos, but I always appreciate time spent in my comment sections :). I'll certainly think through these things for the future. I'm not an oven expert, so apologies if I made a mistake on the typical oven temperature. Perhaps I was speaking based on my oven at the time, which went to at least to 550. I've also seen high-end ovens that go up to 600. I pretty frequently cook at temperatures of 500+ for some of my bread recipes, but if someone never cooks at those temperatures, then it wouldn't be a con for them which is great :) Again, not an oven expert, so I'm that familiar with different techniques of hinge-locking. That being said, as a regular user of the Tovala, the door hitting the counter top is a definite con for me (I don't want to accidentally dent the door even time I open it). You definitely don't need to "fling" it open for it to hit the counter. It's great to hear you wouldn't mind that though for yourself. I don't feel comfortable recommending people going into debt or go on payment plans for everyday items like this. Regarding the pricing, the price per meal is more expensive than many other meal delivery services, so I still stand by the fact that this is for people "who can afford it" since it's definitely more expensive than average. If someone wants a lower cost option, I would not recommend the Tovala (especially since an upfront cost is required).

@ItsJustRyansChannel
@ItsJustRyansChannel 2 года назад
@@ravensjewel-3886 lol I don't typically apologize, but in this case I'll say if you think I came off that way, then I'm sorry. I've always been firm, but fair. IMO, being a "jerk" would just be flat out name calling, belittling, and otherwise being offensive for seemingly no reason. I kept my opinion concise and to the point about this review. I don't know this woman personally, or how well she may or may not review other products. I just got the impression that not a lot of care went in to this review. And it feels like both a slap in the face to not only the viewer but the company that paid you to review their product. Hell, I could be wrong, but I just got the impression that not a lot prep or effort went in to this. Like she looked up a little bit of info on the company and the product and then improv'ed a few things. If it's rude to say that felt lazy to me, then whatever, I guess I'm rude. But as a person who showed up here genuinely looking for a review on this product, she neither sold me on it nor dissuaded me from wanting to buy it. She really didn't tell me anything about it that I didn't already know about it from a topical review I did of their website before looking for videos of it in action. I think that's a disservice to not only the company but to me, the consumer, and potential subscriber to her. But again, if I came off as "hostile", then my bad. I have nothing against her.
@ItsJustRyansChannel
@ItsJustRyansChannel 2 года назад
@@MissSarahEK Well, the oven thing was just an example. Not something I was focused on lol. But the point I was getting at was I just felt not a lot of effort and research went in to the product, especially on coming up with a good pro's and con's list. As for the financing thing, I'm not suggesting it's a viable option for everyone. But as a person who literally raised their credit score by over 200 points in just a few years by doing things like taking on loans, lines of credit, etc., and paying them back on time, not exceeding credit limits, etc. I can certainly attest to the fact that although not everyone can afford to shell out lump sums of cash to buy things outright, they still want "nice things" and having payment options fits their budget better. Just because someone needs something on a payment plan doesn't mean they'll automatically default on it. And I'm not really recommending that you pitch a 3rd party service like Klarna or something, but Tovla DOES offer and advertise Affirm right on their website. So for the sake of the viewer, I don't see how it could hurt to mention it. You really did kind of make it sound like this is something only "rich people" could ever afford. That's just my opinion, but that's the impression that I got. Like if I didn't have $300 extra in my bank account right now for me to blow then this isn't for me and I should just move on. And yea, the meals are a little more on the pricier side, but I'm sure there's a simple, rational breakdown for it. As someone who's subscribed to services like HelloFresh and Home Chef, I can attest that 4 meals a week for a couple averages $80 a week. And Tovla does say on their site they offer some meals for two at $9.99 a serving. At 4 meals a week per person that also breaks down to $80. But I don't know what meals they offer for two, that would have been great if that was something covered in the review. Either way, the current deal isn't a bad offer. And since the oven does so much more, getting it for $100 if I deal with just 6 weeks of their food delivery, which DOES look like good quality food and can be as little as 3 meals a week, it is appealing for people like myself. Anyway, sorry if I came off as rude. I wasn't attacking you on some personal level or anything. I just didn't like the review for a product I was actually interested in purchasing. No hard feelings. I guess if you take any constructive criticism away from the BS I said it'd be to not assume that any of your viewers couldn't afford anything you review. In fact, if you genuinely like and believe in a product that you're reviewing then you should pitch it in a way that makes it seem affordable for a wide range of people. Even if it's just a simple analysis that even a single person could get fresh, healthy, home cooked meals at $12 a serving 3-7 days a week and they're super easy. Compare that to the average cost of ordering take out or DoorDash 3+ days a week. Or for people that don't really know how to cook and may ruin meals, or make too much and it goes to waste. That's not just wasteful but can add up for those paycheck to paycheck people that need to make money count. There are a lot of reasons why this could actually save people like that money in the long run, even if the initial price tag for them seems a bit high. Anyway, thanks for reading. Sorry for any offense. Happy holidays.

@@ItsJustRyansChannel I find it hard to believe you didn’t mean to be rude or that you’re unaware of how rude you were. Your entire post was condescending, overly critical about things that are your preference and not necessary for a review, snide, and outright rude. Just read your last paragraph to see how you ended what was a very long and rude comment.
