Before I gave up on the author, the first sex scene in her Throne of Glass series described a penis as "velvet-wrapped steel" and. I've never forgotten that one. It's so fucking bad. And apparently she reuses that phrase again later in this series and just why. please no.

As a perverted smut writer, I concur. I don't need to use that stupidity unless it's satire. The euphemisms for penises and in that same vein(y flesh-sword), the vulva/vagina are absolutely cringeworthy and ridiculous. I find that if you want to get your reader as steamed up as the characters, be simple about it. The simpler the better. They will be able to understand and thus get 🔥. I have, though, at times used some clinical terms; but the ones I use are ones that I do expect people to look up and say, "OH, THAT'S what it's called!" because they know what it is/where it is, but they didn't know its name. E.g., one of my main characters (I write fan fic, so not a 'published by publishing house' author) loves to swallow her man's 🍆, so when I was describing her first BJ I used the terms that she knew...and how her 👅 lingered and teased his 'frenulum'. I think all of these ridiculous euphemisms are one of two things, possibly both...an extension of our discomfort around sex, and/or deliberate humor intended to emphasize to the reader the fantasy aspect of the work they're reading. Both of these negatively affect the purpose of ✨spice✨ in fiction. A well-written smut scene regardless of the reader's sexuality, gender, or age (post-pubertal ofc, I'm talking anyone with active hormones, not kids) should be able to get anyone hot n' bothered. If it makes a huge lot of people laugh at your work, you're definitely doing something wrong. The minute I start seeing ridiculous terms in a sex scene, I'm out. But then, if there are ridiculous terms to begin with (like how Willow describes the parts that she read), then I too would've put the book down before I even got to that spot. (I think that the art of the simile is also being lost with this abuse of the metaphor. "The knight thrust his velvet sword into her quivering, wet scabbard as she gasped" is worse than writing something like...I dunno..."She cried out, the knight thrusting his c*ck into her slick and tightening sleeve as he would his dagger in the heat of a passionate, satisfying enemy kill, the sounds being forced from her throat similar to those who've pleaded mercy to no avail..." (I rlly don't know 💀) This is why I dislike reading (mostly modern) fiction. I've always been more of a non-fiction reader. I don't like to waste my time. So many non-fiction books in the world I haven't read yet and I've been reading for 48 years. No time for stupidity. Though now I'm rambling and am making y'all waste your own time, so the short of it: I use very simple euphemisms like c*ck (🐓) and balls. For some, just the usage of 🐓 gets them hot.

You encapsulate my feelings about this book so well! I tried to read it last winter because I war curious what the hype was about, and I also dnf-ed it just before the midway point because I felt like NOTHING was going on. I read it together with my partner, and neither of us could even sum up what the most recent chapter we had read was about, it was so bad. And this comes from a person who managed to read the fifth Twilight book :D I fully agree with everything you said. It was just too bad in so many ways, couldn't stomach that book. god you are so on point about the fixation on the 'spiciness' of these books and others like it lmaoooo. i also notice that a lot of these books fixate a lot on the girl or woman in question being a virgin or having no experience next to a man who has a lot (implausibly so in some cases). i think a lot of people who are very sexually repressed tend to gravitate to these books rather than just see sex as a normal part of a lot of people's lives.

lmaooo so far, no one whose reviews i trust has liked these books 😭 ty for sacrificing your time to give it a try and letting us know how it went!! ngl, the hype around ACOTAR (and really, the entire erotica boom going on) reminds me a lot of when 50 Shades first dropped. people were equal parts scandalized and enthralled by a "sexy" book series that was objectively mediocre. it's like part of what draws folks to reading these books is just the opportunity to pearl-clutch about the contents? idk, i didn't understand it back then and i still don't even now. anyways, thanks for breaking down why you dnf'd! i appreciate the time you took to really delve in to what about this book didn't work.

I recently read this book (I succeeded in finishing it cause library audiobook read it to me). It does not pick up, though there are indeed love scenes. It was bad. I'll not be reading more of it. I really dislike how SJM talks down to the reader, not trusting them to remember the simplest information. Many children's books don't do talking down to this degree. That being said, I don't get people hating on others enjoying it. I was one of the Twilight girlies, and despite reading hundreds of much better books, Twilight series was one of my favourite reading experiences: vast majority of girls in my class in year 8-9 were reading those books, I remember all the quiet spot in the school during recess being taken by girls who wanted to read. I remember there were daily meetings to discuss chapters or fragments of the book and you could pick up discussion about the series with basically anyone at any time, the world was your book club! The book wasn't so good, but experience I had with it was just great. If that's a reading experience is for SMJ fans, I hope they enjoy it, it's fun.
@jacforswear18
@jacforswear18 Месяц назад
I think the difference is that your group of twilight fans were children. I also loved twilight, and still do for the nostalgic laugh, but I grew up to realize it was bad, not just because of the writing, but the relationships and themes. ACOTAR fans are primarily adults who think these books are romantic, when they are not, or well written, which they are also not. It draws out people’s ire, whether warranted or not. It’s also frustrating to have genuinely horrific sexual and relationship dynamics lauded as positive, when they are notably harmful in every other media form (video, photographic, etc). I’m waiting for the shoe to drop on “smut” that is just the written equivalent of the dark side in f the video porn industry. On a personal note, I don’t get people who find unrealistic sex hot because … it seems unbearably sad. But that is just my own judgement. 😅

I read ACOTAR a few years back and liked it (despite not really liking fantasy). It's definitely not a great book and I think your criticism of the prose is completely fair, but there's a lot of fun stuff in it and I can definitely see why Maas has a fan base. I even went on and read the next 3 books in the series (2 and 3 are fun, 4 is boring as hell). My really simplistic view is that Maas has a tonne of fans so she is doing something right. And any book that gets people reading who might not be otherwise gets a big thumbs up from me. Re the sex in the book - Yes, it does get spicy, and the sex does feel taboo - it's basically a shifter romance (a sexy Beauty and the Beast). I think there's something about that kind of "forbidden" sex in books that appeals to (and is probably important for) young female readers who are trying to figure all that stuff out. When you're that age I think there is something that resonates about reading sex/romance books where people are having to work through the complexities of sexual relationships. Books like ACOTAR double down on that complexity by adding in fantastical elements. The big equivalent forbidden sex book of my generation was Flowers in the Attic.
@jacforswear18
@jacforswear18 Месяц назад
I’d argue there is really not much important about very unhealthy (and in this case unrealistic) sexual and romantic relationships being unquestionably elevated. That is like saying the exploitive side of the porn industry is important in its own right. It isn’t. There is plenty of literary sex that isn’t bad just like there is plenty of porn that isn’t bad.

I was in the exact same situation; depressed and whole heartedly willing to give this kind of romantasy a chance. But I also came to the very same conclusion as you did, I mean dear god what's with all the adjectives? It has become such a pet peeve for me recently as now I can't unsee it whenever authors go ham with them. And yes, the language in general is not the best either. Which also made me realise how different motivations and priorities people have when it comes to literature. I personally care more about the language and structure than plot and characters, but others clearly just want light entertainment (on their reading level) which is all fine and good of course. Which leads me to the idea that I've seen around the internet a lot, abt how this is basically fan fiction for straight girls who didn't have intense fictional shipping wars at age 12, like many more or less queer people seem to have had earlier in our lives. So it would seem that many who are into romantasy just don't have much to compare the reading experience to. Being a straight woman in this media scape must also be very difficult and psychologically complicated due to the ever present male gaze, so I do find some compassion for this genre through that lense. But truth to be told, there is a whole discussion to be had abt why it is the way it is (grievances and trauma of being so thoroughly objectified and vilified by men, craving acceptance, respect, power and love under patriarchy and through internalized misogyny, you name it). If it makes them happy and if they find some form of solace or empowerment from it, that's fantastic. It seems people like me or you just aren't the target audience :) But dear god I wish I could get through at least one without dnfing to understand it all better. Yet, the adjectives if anything are keeping me from doing so.
@spinstercatlady
@spinstercatlady 22 дня назад
Completely agree that target age group and one's reading level are HUGE factors in who's going to enjoy these books. Teens who don't have wide reading experience are mainly who is going to enjoy. I imagine I'd have probably liked these books when I was 15, but now, being very much an adult with fairly broad reading experience, there's just no way I could ever get into them lol.

I very nearly DNF this, but was in a book club, ironically with a group of very non Christian women who LOVED these books. I too found the writing almost unbearable to read. I read ACOTAR (the whole series!) earlier this year and found the writing to be passable enough to turn my brain off and enjoy (especially compared to some other SJM work that I finished out of spite alone) but I was like “THIS is your so called faerie smut?” Your point about how fawning over these reeks of prudishness is very accurate especially with this first book. Until much later in the series, the “spice” is very tame and sparsely written.

It's not that there is sex present, but the fact that these were written originally as YA books for teens. If I remember correctly, a couple of books in, there were nervous whispers that led to a rebranding into the new adult genre. But personally I also find that the way some people speak of these books makes it clear that it's more like erotica to them. (Poorly written, but I digress), and yet they have invaded the fantasy space entirely as though the book isn't a thinly veiled and painfully drawn out porn.

So, being an old person: 44, i have seen the waves of "spicy" books over the years. It happens about 10 years. A huge push to the envelope of what is normal and okay romance. Anne Rice as Ann Rampling, Harliquin Publishing, kushiel series, laurel k Hamilton, Lindsay Sands (vampires), 50 shades of gray ect. This is so popular that fundamentalist Christians had to come up with their own godly version. I know that not every author will write stuff i like. For lots of reasons. I read the whole serie but I got into it knowing this would be "Fae geordie shore" I just picked it as a trashy entertainement medium and this was very fun to read. In the end it's all clichés, some bit of spice, and very very very very straight and heteronormative (even later with some queer rep, it's very narrow labels to tick some boxes, same as reality TV would do). So, I'll enjoy sometimes watching TLC shows, and that's what these books are for me, along with the Atlas Six and such.

In 2022, I saw Sarah J Maas had won the fantasy award in the Goodreads Choice awards, again, and thought it time to read one of her books to see what the fuss was about. I didn't go for A Court of Thorns and Roses, I chose the novella, The Assassin and the Underworld because it was one of the cheapest for Kindle and it was short. It was interesting, the narrator in my head was the same as I have for Brandon Sanderson, (I first sampled Sanderson with the novella, Edgedancer), there is a similar vibe but Maas has more romance and less magic. This is the story of a teenage assassin Celaena, so I guess it is YA, there is not a lot of empathy in Celaena's character particularly towards the courtesan Lysandra. There was plenty of action, no deer shooting, but sneaking past bodyguards and wading through unmentionable detritus in the sewers of Rifthold. It was an enjoyable read but not especially memorable, I rated it 3.5 stars and haven't read anything by her since.

I truly love your review! Once I accepted, it was the best of the mediocre soap operas, and I had fun with it. I did end up listening to the whole series while driving to work! It works well that way. But I totally get why it's so hard to get through it. Your review was completely on point!

I don’t want to come for you with the vitriol that the sjm girlies are known for and totally respect that acotar is not for everyone. That said, as a fantasy reader I feel like it’s an unwritten rule that the first half (often the first 75%) of the first book in a fantasy series is a bit (often more than a bit) of a slog. I was in the same acotar is silly fantasy for normies camp until I read them and I had such a good time. I think we collectively as a society have accepted that baby boy Rhysand makes the first trilogy - he is the first trilogy. You didn’t even meet him…you’ll never know what you’re missing - a true tragedy. Genuinely do really enjoy your content and appreciate you giving it a shot!

I DNFed this book at the same point and felt the same way! I can’t really understand what is appealing about this book, but also to each their own, I suppose. I just think there is so much better written fantasy with romance/sex in it out there that it surprises me a bit that this is what gets so huge?

Ohhh, i tried this too. Really. After all glorious, hyped reviews - i tried. And DNF'ed it. Idk.. maybe i'm just not into badly written faerie porn. I need my porn books to be well written :D. Also - if the punishment for killing some wingy thingies who shifts to sexy wolves is living in castle, not working, eating from golden plates and fucking, idk why everyone who is poor in that village is not killing those faeries. Because... that's not a punishment. That's more like winning a lotery. Sorry. I can't take that book seriously. It was one of the dumbest plots that i've read in recent years :D

Like you, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I bit the bullet, and read it earlier this year. I actually finished it, and hated every second of it. BUT this is actually the book that spurred me to finally DNF books I don't enjoy, which I never used to do.

I read this for the exact same reasons you did Willow. I consumed half the book as audio. It’s based on beauty and the beast but the sisters are giving Cinderella’s step sisters. I got as far as just after the fairy party outside where she wasn’t supposed to go, but does anyway. And her virtue has to be saved by a noble from another court. There was a bit of a/b/o trope sprinkled in. The magical goggles are off and she can see how everyone around her is actually fae, not human looking at all. She freaks out. There’s something hunting the people and Tamlin comes home injured with this dark blue looking creature. She holds its hand while it dies and it’s all very endearing for the big Fairy lord. I just didn’t care in the end. I read enough to know it’s not for me rn. Maybe when I was a teen. Caricanread mentioned that the last book in the crescent city series, SJM writes the mc as having realised that big parts of what they’d grown up being told was actually wrong. It’s also fairy myth related but contemporary. There’s like a matrix style conspiracy reveal. I watch her plot breakdowns instead of reading the books.

One of my best friends convinced me to read Throne of Glass. It took me years picking my way through it on ebook. Finally, read the audio on double speed, just so I could say that I had read it. You wouldn't think a competition between assassins could be boring but Maas managed it. Also, the main character is the most imcompetent infamous assassin imaginable.

I read two of her throne of glass books in university and I thought both were fun but mediocre. Because she was so young when she wrote them, I had hoped she could improve her craft someday. But over various reviews, it doesnt seem her writing or plotting has changed much at all. Also, I wanted to thank you for your video about Boy Parts by Eliza Clark. I'm currently reading it, and I'm so impressed.

Gosh I loved the book when it came out, like 10 (?) years ago? Loved the second book even more and then ... Just stopped reading the series. The hype the books got during the pandemic took me by surprise because they already were a thing several years ago and even though I loved them my older me tried to re-read them and failed, too. I can see, how this series wins the hearts of young women and girls and they kind of became the blueprint of everything romantasy book out there, reaching the summit with Fourth Wing which is by far one of the worst books I've ever come across and it's so obvious that this book was only written to fit booktok/ tik tok.

I really try to avoid DNFing, and for that reason I have not attempted this series. I have friends who rave about it and even when they describe it emphatically to persuade me, it sounds so bad lol I know deep in my heart, and on a basic surface level, that this is not for me and can only result in the exact same thoughts you’ve described. You’re a braver soul than me for trying, and I applaud you.

i’ve read the series and while i’ve enjoyed it, i totally understand why people would dislike it and have a lot of opinions on specific decisions SJM makes with her characters/plotting. it really is one of those guilty pleasure reads and everyone is going to have different preferences for their “brain-off!” books!

You articulated this so well. I finished ACOTAR, but man that first 50% was a SLOG. And the rest is barely any better. Feyre is one of the most frustrating characters ever written. Things she thinks and says and does makes absolutely no sense and exist solely to create romantic situations. It was a struggle to stay in it when I just wanted to bash the book over her head 😒

I read everything, every genre. It all gets a fair shot in my to read pile. I read not just for the stories but there is a lot of psychology and sociology that plays into what is popular in media. I like to read the popular books because it tells you so much about where humanity is at in that moment of history. Also, sometimes I just read too many heavy books or life is just hectic or my husband has been deployed too long and I need something to escape into with a story I don't need to think too hard about and some sexy time.

I think this is the first video I watched on this or SJM's books in years. And just as everyone else you didn't like the writing. This has been the one consistent thing in everyone who isn't over the top for the books, but critical. I will continue to not read the books and not care about them. There is better romantasy aout there - still hate that label, though.

Even if a particular author has a massive fan base doesn't mean they'll click with you. I've given one of these authors a chance with a book and a half, point blank refuse to even crack open any book by another after reading a very detailed one-star review that made a very good case, and it looks like SJM is going to join that club. Time is finite which makes it my most precious resource. Thanks for helping me make a decision.

I had a similar reaction when I read the book. I thought "It was fine" and then tried to forget about it. Then, I got a best friend who ADORES ACOTAR, so I tried again, this time on audio. I fared much better with that, and was able to make it through the whole series. It didn't turn me into a believer or anything, but it was like curling up with a cozy fanfiction (affectionate) and just turning my mind off to enjoy the ride. I think there is a lot to dissect and make great analysis on, but I think that'll have to come from someone who honestly enjoyed the series rather than me, who was just like "I see why people like it. Amren is objectively sexy. Rhysand is the author's pet character and I hate him on that principle alone... but I also see why 'Shadow Daddies' became a thing after he appeared." So, yeah. Maybe try audio? And don't try to catch every word, I promise it's better that way.

My 17 year old daughter read some of these books. She kinda enjoyed them for a while but it got pretty old. Eventually we got to laughing and making fun of bits she would read aloud. It was an awakening ... into what is bad literature/writing and how to distinguish and run away from it. One book is literally the main character and her "man" preparing endlessly and tediously for an upcoming meeting of faeries, worrying about buying !!!?Christmas?!!! presents and pining for/lusting after each other followed by bad sex scenes. And yes it uses euphemisms like "molten core" etc. Definitely a blatant filler volume for a concept that had long since run it's course. She told me that there was also a lack of stakes in the books - characters (not even main ones) would die and then be healed or come back to life. Also most everything was resolvable by magic. In later books (she got through 3 I think) the main character gets special powers she never even really uses and she mostly passively sits around watching the men-folk fight... So yeah....

I couldn’t finish it either because of the writing. I think the reason why the spicy scenes are often highlighted also has a lot to do with the time at which ACOTAR was released and got popular. Before that we had tons of YA fantasy romance books, a wave kicked off by Twilight, and while they all dealt with falling in love with sexy supernatural creatures all of them had fade to black sex scenes (if any at all), so ACOTAR still speaking to a YA audience but also having explicit sex scenes was something new and unusual but yearned for for the this group of readers.

Damn, I already told people I'd give this a go and read the first book, now I'm dreading it even more. I've heard people quote the books and I cringe every time. I've also been watching your channel for almost two years now, and in that time I've never zoned out while watching one of your videos until this one when you were describing the plot. I normally feel captivated by the way you talk about books and you never loose my attention (which is saying something cause I have ADHD). The book sounds so dreadfully boring. lol I also generally hate romance novels with straight characters cause most of the time I feel they have zero chemistry and the relationship always feels forced. I also hate when half the novel is just descriptions of how hot the main characters are. Not looking forward to reading this, but kudos to you for giving it a chance.

When my daughter was reading the Twilight series years ago I almost literally had to bite my tongue to keep from my natural inclination to say "what the f? ugh stop please, honey" ~ but I was just glad she was reading, and she's not an extension of me, she's her own person. But dear lord, there are so many better books out there ~ these books perpetuate harmful and demeaning stereotypes and behaviors. Though I do love Schitts Creek...

Very real struggle. I think, many fans only love the story from book 2 onward when the narrative changes drastically. But honestly, that is so much work to even get to the point where people say it's good, and there are so many books out there and only so much time. Totally valid DNF. I wanted to ask, a) are you at the Edinburgh Book festival/fringe? b) if one sees you, would you be comfortable with someone saying hi or would you rather one would not? I'm asking because I really want to respect your wishes and privacy if I should see you somewhere (:

I thought you handled this gracefully. Here's the thing: we all love something that's objectively shitty. And that's ok. For me, it's terrible pulp fiction sci fi and mystery science/rifftrax level bad movies. My partner loves this kind of 'sexy time fantasy' stuff and they (she's shared several) are, to a book, completely, utterly, hilariously terrible. But then again, so are most of my 'totally not copying Battlestar Galactica old man on an old ship saves the galaxy by spitting one liners and porking the hot, compliant, squadron commander half his age who exists only to have boobs' shitty sci fi, which I like because I have a completely uncritical love of big space ships that go 'pew pew!' Sometimes you want a fancy, well prepared, memorable dinner. And sometimes you want a bag of Cheetos and a box of pop tarts. Never apologize for liking pop tarts.
