Hello lovelies,
Today I will be trying out Elizabeth Taylor's favorite foundation and face powder for a week.
Elizabeth Taylor was a British American actress who started her career as a child actress in the early 1940s and became one of the most popular stars of classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950s. She continued her career into the 1960s and remained a well-known public figure for the rest of her life.
Elizabeth Taylor had many beauty secrets and would spend several hours doing her makeup. She would spend half an hour doing her lips and an hour and a half applying her eye makeup. To set her makeup, she would take a long bubble bath and use the steam as a way to set her makeup. Elizabeth Taylor loved to use drugstore makeup brands, and her favorite face cream was Jergens. Later in life, she opted for higher-end brands like Elizabeth Arden and religiously used the classic Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream from the 1930s. Her favourite setting powder was a lesser-known brand from Japan called Maquifard.

Foundations
In 1936, Arden combined Crème de France and Lille Lotion to create a new foundation she called Lille de France. She had previously recommended this, so this new foundation formalized longstanding practice. It was recommended for all skin types and just for dry skin on occasion.
Two additional foundations aimed at younger complexions were added towards the end of the decade - All-Day Foundation Cream (1939), a heavier foundation to help conceal blemishes, and a lighter Feather-Light Foundation Cream (1940) for a less obvious makeup. Both foundations came in a limited range of shades.
All-Day Foundation Cream: “Glows softly through powder and gives your face a lovely, luminous look. Helps conceal sudden blemishes - freckles - tan.” Shades: Natural, Rachel, Rose-Rachel, and Rosetta Bronze. Dark Rachel and Telecast Blonde were added in 1940.

Try to dab and pat the foundation on with minimal dragging. That's how I get cream foundations to look more smooth and to have slightly more coverage.

Press in the powder with a powder puff. Press press press. They wanted perfection so they also had to have their makeup applied correctly

I remember back in about 2008-10 Elizabeth Taylor had lipstick made for her by Elizabeth Arden that was sold in store. I hoarded it because it was so good. I absolutely loved it. After she passed away it was discontinued. The powder looks like body powder, is it? I love this video. I know Elizabeth Arden is an excellent company.

You need to dampen the sponge and press it onto your skin. It will give you better coverage and last longer. There is a wonderful RU-vidr on here named Kelly Strack and she has some great tips for applying makeup. I've learned a lot from her. I am really enjoying this series. Please keep doing them.

The foundation works really well with a foundation brush. I've used it for decades with a brush and never had an issue x

These old school makeups often require a damp sponge and or the warmth of finger tips. Applied in a dabbing motion.

Vertical patting action of the powder puff, rather than rubbing horizontally across the face, creates a far better and smoother effect.

You are definitely an ivory shade like myself. Pat and dab the foundation into the skin instead of using the sponge given and pulling on ur face. Even ur fingers would be a better option. Maybe add some of the foundation with ur fingers, dab with a damp beauty sponge, and I even go one step further with a blending brush for my face. I think going light handed with this foundation is the key.

You are so beautiful & distinct! You would fit amongst the old Hollywood actresses. Awesome video, I know you are keeping to the authenticity to Elizabeth’s routine, but I think you may like the foundation even more if you utilized a beauty blender shaped sponge & used tapping motions . Great video :)

I would wash and dampen the sponge before and after uou use it so it doesn't absorb product or store bacteria that you'd be putting back into your makeup. Squeeze out excess water into a towel before using. Drag to load up the sponge with foundation, but dont drag the foundation over your face with the sponge - dragging with a sponge removes makeup. Dab the foundation on with the sponge and pat gently to blend out, like you would with a beauty blender. You can apply more where needed (even in light layers of foundation & powder with a dab of foundation over the top and more powder). Set with the powder by gently pressing into the face (preferably with a puff or you could just use the other side of the same sponge). Using a brush will just scratch the makeup off your face and clump it up with the powder.

I have that foundation in vanilla shell, love using during the autumn/winter. You can use dry with the sponge for a full cover or slightly damp sponge for a lighter cover or just fingers on certain areas, you don't have to powder if you like the glow. My other favourite is clinique superbalanced in Alabaster along with their loose powder in transparancy neautral.{ margarate Thatcher} A past British Pm only ever used clinique makeup she also loved the two makeup items what I listed. Let either foundation set for a couple of minutes first then blot slightly with a tissue then powder,i personally love using a puff. Marilyn monroe also used Elizabeth Arden pat a cream makeup which is now the above sponge on one.

You’re wiping the foundation all around. It’s to be applied by patting with a damp sponge. Elizabeth would have used a powder puff and patted the powder onto her skin and pressed it in. I’m old and watched my mom doing this style of makeup.

Applying in downward strokes packs your pores. The sponge breeds bacteria so wash and said dry it frequently or it will smell badly and the foundation will, too.

That eyeshadow has to go, how 1960's 19 year old. That said, I didn't catch a price, I assume it is around the same price point as Estee Lauder, a fabulous foundation. I find success with a good little foundation brush then powder and buff, buff, buff for a nice natural finish that lasts all day. Sorry about the eyeshadow comment, I was traumatized there for a minute.
