In my experience, the model of a vtuber is such a small part of the experience compared to the performer themself. It's about the performance, the interaction with the audience, and the culture both are experiencing in that space. There are so many streams where I don't even need a screen at all to thoroughly enjoy its content; zatsudans, karaoke, some forms of collaborative streams where a visual game isn't part of the content such as TTRPGs and hangout sessions... The content in itself takes the same form as non-vtubers, but what mainly distinguishes vtuber content is the performance (the sum of elements that make up the character and how the performer embodies that character), the culture of vtuber fandom and the forms of interaction that culture brings to the table

thanks for this. i like listening to youtube video essays and bellumodo kinda fills for things vtubers in my mind. for a moment, i was excited for the possibility of a vtuber 'video essayist', but i tend to not look at the videos anyway, and live cam stuff can provide such strong imagery - looking back to that trash pile backdrop on one of the videos on stopping watching vtubers (haven't seen them all). still, i suppose live2d stuff provides more options, perhaps for humor.

A very interesting behind-the-scenes sort of perspective on VTubing! The actual act of doing this successfully is both easier and harder than it seems like at first glance. You need a baseline of technical skill to even get up and running... but for me, it's definitely a good trade off for not having to do a full face of makeup and dress nicely every time I want to stream or make some content. I think that operating a VTuber model is less like putting on a costume than it is piloting a mech... or frankly operating a puppet. You have to direct your performance through your rig and what it is capable of, and that's an art in and of itself. I don't know that I've mastered that particular thing, but I know that I've become very attached to my own self-made model and have come to see it as something between an extension of myself and a character I can slip into to perform as. I can absolutely see it being hard if not impossible to form that kind of connection with a model you know isn't uniquely yours.

I have watched Vtuber for 4 years (I guess) since the day Tokino Sora debut as a talent of Hololive. And that time, I was thinking: hum, these virtual characters are interesting, you can become an anime girl or boy or whatever you want and not scared of being judged by someone. But now after working as a staff (exactly a supporter) for some indie Vtuber, I realize this path is really really hard to walking. You will need a decent PC to use 2D models or a good if it is 3D, ofc, and know how to set up a lot of stuff (as she said it't really if you only have one monitor). Now talking about models, there are two ways to have a virtual model: 1. Get free from some software (like prpr, this one new for me lol, or 3d vroid studio, bla bla...) 2. Make or buy yourself. The free models or the cheap ones have very poor condition, it will be lagging, having weird movement and more. The expensive models as it name cost a lot of money to get one (2500-4000$ as I know) but you will have good s**t, love Vtuber on bilibili they have such good models even indie. Plus, you will need such a good mental health just to prepare the worst things can happen, the drama, doxxing, anti-fans,.... And yes, you now are not you, you are role-playing a character so EVERYTHING you do or say can lead to an end of Vtuber career or even your real life (I am really scared of people who doxxing others). Once you become a Vtuber, you won't see this fun anymore (still a little). But in case of having some new friends or fans, it will be great, like two face of a coin. PS: thanks for reading my wall of context, there are many things that I can't share, sorry for that. But if someone wants to become a Vtuber, here is some of my advices.

dang, i loved your video and humor haha i have my own model but it isn't rigged so it can't move yet, and i started searching for free models to get some money i could use to rig mine unfortunately i have 0 idea on lots of stuff, like: i downloaded some models but in Live2D they show with all the arms and poses at the same time and idk how to fix that, my PC is trash for using OBS so i have to record my phone or tablet and PC separately to then edit a video, no streams at all lots of problems, lots of failures but i'm still trying i really wish you the best and i hope you can get your own model, and we can even collab one day if you want i'll see you on the other side~ big hugs from mexico
