Hello everyone and welcome to another video! In this one, I'm trying The Artist's way. This is a journalling challenge / program for people who want to unlock their creativity. So, essentially, I tried journalling every day for THREE MONTHS and I tell you what I did not succeed 😂
I found this challenge really tough, but I'm glad I did it. I really enjoyed journalling. I enjoyed trying out Julia Cameron's Artist's Way and although I didn't hit the 252 page goal nor did I journal consistently for three months, I did really enjoy the journalling I did actually do.
I hope you enjoy the video! Thank you for watching 💛

If it's any consolation, I actually really appreciate that you didn't completely do it 100%! Not only because you recognized it wasn't something you could fit into your life at the moment and that it would lead to burnout and you chose your mental health over full completion of the challenge, but also because it feels so relatable. And since you normally do complete these challenges along with all the other vid editing and writing you do (seriously, no idea how you do it all) it's actually super helpful for me as a perfectionist to see that no one can do everything 100% and we have to prioritize, you're not always gonna complete something fully and that's ok. Especially if you still did some of it and got something out of that bit. So honestly I see this video as a win!

Writing a book is like making a painting. My objective is to have an art gallery and produce more paintings as I continue to grow along the way. A writer grows, and so does an artist. The more you write, the more you’ll progress.

Thank you for addressing neurodivergence! I have ADHD (and also hypothyroidism which makes me really lethargic). Even on my best days I tend to just go above the ideal (unless I’m hyperfocusing, but it has its own side effects), and on my bad days I’m basically crippled. It is important to know our situation, our life, our mental health before committing to something. It is important to give ourselves a modified version to fit our life. Thank you for being open with your struggles, it inspired me to try out this challenge and let myself be imperfect.

I’m honestly so glad to see someone else say the Artists Way added stress to their life rather than being a calming therapeutic experience. I’ve tried the Artists Way a few times, it never feels good. I’ve opted to just have my own diary and write in it when I feel like it, whatever comes to mind. No pressure or demands. That has been more helpful.

I’ve been undertaking this program for 10 weeks now. And I totally agree with you it’s different for everyone. I’m 18 years old, taking a gap year and I was very lost and my life was feeling flat and meaningless before The Artist’s Way. I’ve literally come to the conclusion I was not alive before the course, the pages, the artist’s dates and everything. I’ve done the tasks and I’ve never imagined life could be so fun. Also I have always been a perfectionist too. I love writing but I had never finished one single short story because I would take hours in one paragraph because it wasn’t good enough. And at the same time it has been so good for me it’s good to see someone else’s perspective on it and I absolutely loved to know you’ve taken the course too and to hear your perspective on it. ❤

I am currently doing The Artist's Way with a group of creative friends and we are discussing the chapters week by week and doing some of the tasks, as well as morning pages. I think it's really helpful to do this book in a group and get to talk and share about what spoke to you, and then we all learn from each other. I had also done the book back in the 90s when it first came out, in a group as well. There's a lot of good stuff in there, especially if you have some bigger fears and blocks (like I do!), and Christy, you have been working so hard as a writer and RU-vidr... you don't seem to be blocked and maybe don't need the rest of the advice in the book. I do think you're right to not be perfect about doing any of it-- I write the morning pages anytime of day, I haven't done many artist dates. You really can use this as a tool to help you and not follow it religiously, and still get a lot out of it. Thanks for taking on this challenge and sharing with us!

The "morning" pages are the best tool from TAW and I've done them in the morning before and there's a benefit to doing it first thing (in terms of having a fresh brain) but I don't think you lose out if that's not possible. I've done the exercises before and usually I would pick a day to do them (not in conjunction with reading the book) and it's been interesting to see comparisons between previous responses. But, the exercises are really geared towards opening you up to your own process, examining it and refreshing it. And that isn't always necessary. As to the Artist's Date--I don't remember it being a two hour requirement and if it always has been I've never adhered to that 😅. It's mainly an excuse to do something fun and that's how I took it. But, it is hard to make it a conscious habit on a weekly basis. When I did Artist's Dates I purposely went into cute shops that intrigued me and window shopped, I got tickets to shows I wouldn't normally have made the time to go to, I'd walk to new places, etc. Even something like putting on some music and zoning out was something I'd count. It was entirely about the "date" aspect of having an adventure with my artist self. And sometimes you stay in and chill with your artist 🎉

I completely agree with you when it comes to prompts and exercises. When I'm reading, I'm more in a receptive state, so to be asked to stop and do an exercise just feels really disjointed to me. I love it when I'm reading, and spontaneously something inspires me to grab my notebook and start writing, but those moments come organically; they're not prompted by an external source. Morning pages wouldn't work for me because of my medical conditions and medications. I'm chronically ill and disabled with a slew of rare conditions. I'm also neurodivergent. Midnight pages work better for me.

The principle of MP is a brain dump! Midnight works fine. I can’t do my MP first thing because I have an elderly beagle and if I wake up, she’s up, and if she’s up, she needs to get her old lady bones out for a walk. It’s fine. I’m about to sit down to do my MP at 10 am. It’s a gift, not an obligation.

I so loved your sharing your experience of trying out the Artist's Way! I am 39 and have journaled most days since age 11, so I ran into her material quite young. And I must say -- my experience, and that of everyone I've seen trying it, was so similar to yours! We find that doing them in the morning is quite hard and feels erroneous so we do them whenever we want; and we find that the Artist Dates feel quite shoe-horned in very short order. The older I get, the more privileged white lady this writing advice feels. Her subsequent work feels even more disconnected from the reality of the normal working person's life, and I wouldn't recommend it. All that being said, anything that gets people writing is a gift, and I love any video seeing you crossing over from fiction to journal territory :) It would be fun to see you review and try out some journal-oriented writing books, and let us know your thoughts on their approaches! Appreciate all your hard work.

I’ve read this book a few times and tried it a few times and yes to everything you said. I’ve journaled off and on since I was a kid (I’m now 40), been struggling with creative projects, etc. But every time I read TAW, I’m just like, “……🫤🫤🫤🫤🫤”

I worked through the artist’s way with a group of women during Covid lockdown and I thought it was amazing! I want to do it again sometime before I retire (5 yrs). I also did very few of the exercises, so I’d like to do more of that the second time around. The journaling was very beneficial with helping me work through some of the blocks to my creativity, although halfway through the 12 weeks, I started feeling like I had accomplished that, so I would often just write about the beautiful things in life at the moment, or write out my positive affirmations. I rarely wrote three pages a day, I just wrote until I was done; usually 1-4 pages. The affirmations really helped me keep positive… I should do that first thing every day! If I redo the artist’s way at some point, I will probably write on a project when I reach the point of having less to journal about, and/or use the exercises to fill that space. (I never wrote in the morning either, but the point is to create time and a routine, so I felt like I accomplished that). Being stuck inside a lot during Covid made me desperate for artists dates, but I had to get a bit creative because a lot of galleries were closed at the time. I did however take online workshops, shopped for secondhand art books, sat at the beach and sketched or worked on an art project. I felt successful with the artists dates because it forced me to get out during Covid and kept me working on my art projects even though the world was a bit crazy and uninspired during Covid (I’m a printmaker as well as a writer). The best thing was working through the book with a group of artist women, and during our weekly checkin via zoom, we all got to know each other, support each other and discuss how similar our experiences were. We felt supported.

You don't even now how your video came in the right time for me! It's been 3 weeks since I started the course from The Artist's Way and I'm currently and still in week one lol. In the first week I wasn't able to find a time to set my artist's date, in the second week I didn't do all the morning pages, and I still didn't finish all the assignments. It's really complex to balance work and life (house cleaning, cooking, taking care of a pet, resting, etc), and when I added this to my daily/weekly routine, it was and it's still difficult to manage. I was feeling so much pressure about not being able to do it correctly. See that anyways you did it, motivated me to continue in this path how I can. Really, thank you so much for your sincerity and transparency, it warmed my heart. As you, I've been enoying writing these 3 pages everyday, I hope it becomes an habit! :)

I love journaling! I prefer to do it at night, when I’m done with my responsibilities for the day and before I start relaxing. It’s a way to very literally put down the things I’ve been holding or even juggling for the day. Some days it’s several pages, some days it’s a half page, some days I just don’t. But I’ve been doing it for years now and don’t intend to ever quit.
@Parlezkate
@Parlezkate 5 месяцев назад
I’m so glad you did it! If it makes you feel better, I attempted and quit TAW once in my 20s and again in my 30s! Mainly because I found fault with the program, or with me not doing it right, or timing, etc. I did the whole program a year or so ago, in my late 40s, and it was a whole new experience. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be worth doing; you don’t have to do it perfectly to get something out of it, as you said. Each of my friends dropped out along the way for various reasons that mapped to why I dropped it, but my circumstances allowed me to finish the program. I treated it like a class, so I did all the prompts, even when I hated them. I dropped the artist dates pretty early too because I am free to do as I please, I don’t have to make a date. I’m still doing the morning pages. I’m on day 428. Not all of them were in a row, and most days I only write 2 pages. But it’s the habit that I value. Great video. A+. Can’t imagine trying to film myself doing that program! You need an assistant😂

You know what? I appreciate what you're saying about not liking to follow the prompts given in the book. I tried this program of my own accord, and I always got the feeling that I was hemmed in by the prompts. I got really close to actually finishing things, but fell off at week 11... I was so close too!! But you know what, we made the efforts for ourselves and I think we get to celebrate that too. Best wishes and good luck with your projects.

I found that Morning Pages helped so much with the anxiety I would wake up with. And I realized I still had more to say, so I started doing regular journaling as well. It's helped so much with my overall well-being. I think the Artist's Way is really good for helping you find little things to get you into the groove of being consistently artistic, but that doing all of it is too much. I also liked the way she talked about how to deal with the shame that comes along with being an artist, as it's something a lot of us struggle with. I also didn't do a lot of the prompts as I find a lot of times that they just don't appeal to me.😅

I journal pretty regularly, but not daily. I was working through The Artist's Way recently, too! I haven't finished yet and skipped some of the prompts, but I've enjoyed it overall. Also, I rarely actually wrote my morning pages in the morning. Usually, I worked on it at lunchtime. This is motivation for me to get back to it today.

Hey there. Just wanted to say to keep up the work. Even if it's not a "successful" challenge, just doing something and making something is definitely worth it. I am going through a tough time right now in my personal life, and discovering your videos and listening to them during either my morning routine or just when I have free time has been very therapeutic to me and my mental health. I did the artist's way for the third time in my life this past summer and my current novel popped out into the world. I think for me, learning a lot of the lessons she shares in the book and through the prompts was a good way to cement these creative lessons when I was young. But obviously I need reminders! When I did it this past summer, i had moments where I realized that this had been the source for a couple of deep seated beliefs and I felt that its just such a good, positive way to think about creativity, it really released me from some of the baggage I had been carrying around. I have continued to keep a "Morning Pages" notebook since i completed it - and i did it all except the artist dates too (my life is an artist date?) but I only do two pages, because i like the evenness of that. I use this as a way to get focused on my creativity. Instead of reacting to what is happening in my life, because I will get carried away with that. I agree with others, you dont seem blocked and this book is really about exploring why we may not be creating - wether fear or some other emotion. You are so prolific with your creativity, that I agree with others, you did it perfect for you.

I journal most days and have for years. Even I find 3 pages everyday to be too much. I usually write 1-2 A5 pages. Sometimes I write more but it all depends on how cluttered my mind feels. Some days I’m just tired and don’t have the energy. I’ve found that journaling is best done when it isn’t forced.

I liked The Artists Way fine. But Morning Pages I really took to practice and do whenever I get super burnt out. I restart morning pages and go for a few months and it really, really helps. Everything else I've ditched. The book itself is not for me either - so if folks are struggling with reading the book and getting value, don't worry! Just read a blog from someone else or watch a video.

May I ask what the pretty purple square notebook is? It's so cute! I'm thrilled that you didn't follow the brief to the letter and didn't hit the 252 pages - because I rarely finish anything and it seems like magic when other people consistently do. So it's very refreshing and relatable to see someone whose project output I admire say that it just didn't happen for them this time. I'm also a big fan of tailoring methods to your own abilities. The people who write the books are ultimately sharing the system that works for them, so it makes sense that it won't be a perfect 1:1 for anyone else. I personally just do the 3 mornng pages when I have too many bees in my head, but I do journal daily in other ways. I was relieved when you said you started in September, because I realised you would have been journalling through that tumultuos querying time, and how therapeutic that daily venting and reflection would have been. Thank you for putting together this lovely video - I can't believe how many long format videos you were juggling at once ✨

I dropped the artists date as it was just another thing to have to do, also I found the idea if not stopping writing just keeping on when my mind was blank quite stressful. Writing I can't think of anything to write seemed pointless to me. However the habit is good so I am going to watch more of your journalling videos to find a better fit for me. Honestly, you made it past where I did in the book. You mentioned this book once before in a video and I picked it up. I found it really hard to write in an actual journal, so I did what you're not supposed to, and I started writing in an online document. I also bought the companion workbook for journaling and it was HUGE. The trouble was it was taking sooooooo long to write, not to mention I couldn't think of what to write. The book itself was annoying me with all the talk of a Creator. I ended up just skimming the rest of the book. I only made it a little over a week in the journaling thing, but you make me want to try again, but with a smaller journal. Thanks for letting us know about how you did, even if it didn't go so well.

On the website she (Cameron) describes the morning pages shouldn't take more than 30-40minutes and iirc she recommended printer paper for size, in all my browsing reddit regarding TAW, as I struggled with them taking too long and some other things being unclear, I found out the morning pages are supposed to be roughly 750 words (there was something about websites being modeled after this amount of daily pages), 250 a page, which for most (not considering motor skill issues or fatigue) 30min is doable with that amount, but turned out my A5 sized notebook pages were 480 words average as I write small, and my average 30min writing point was about 1.5 pages, so that translated to about the 750 word mark. Knowing this goal amount might help some people reframe what/how they're doing it and make choices that are better for them. Doing 3 pages took me over an hour and was *not* sustainable for me personally. I don't do my pages first thing in the morning, but I do them before really starting my day, so usually after breakfast/before chores or work. Needed about 1.5 months of extra time to get through all 12 weeks of TAW (took 1 month off cuz I'd felt too overwhelmed with life) and then some weeks I gave an extra week to digest. Today was my last day of week 12 and I don't regret following the book but I don't agree with half the framing in it. I will be continueing the morning pages myself, I write in fountain pens which makes the process more enjoyable for me and seeing a notebook filled with my handwriting makes me feel a special kind of way. Being able to go back to my thoughts later on shows me some things about myself I might not have realised in the moment. Artist dates are still my biggest issue, I have a lot of free time and I never felt like what could be or wouldnt count as artist dates was very unclear to me. I'm ND and found a lot of things were elaborated that didn't need it, lot of filler, and anything I needed clarification on was kept short and vague.

It sounds like my every attempt at doing this - except I’ve never made it that far into morning pages. It seems like such a nice concept, but when it comes down to it, it’s almost too demanding - and I’m a perfectionist so if if I can’t do it exactly right, I don’t even bother 😂

After this video I decided to read the book and try it out, but I also am in the process of failing within the very first week, haha. For me, the first hour of the morning is my most creative time for writing my novel, so the morning pages interfere with that. Maybe they're helpful if you're a different kind of artist, like a painter? But 3 pages is too much for me, too... A goal of one page seems more reasonable. I enjoy the artist date, though. I will happily continue to do that. :)

I recently also tried the morning pages, but stopped doing them, because it did not mesh well with my day. Time in the morning is already limited enough, and I already struggle to wake up as early as I do. It is best to do your writing where your life allows it. Furthermore I did not follow the prescription of writing three full pages but only a single page, which for me equates to about 30 minutes. Julia Cameron should have used a time goal as well - font size and page size are different for all of us.

I personally didn't like the Artist Way, but I did like the journaling aspect it offered. Don't feel too bad that you didn't do the process "perfectly." A friend and I did the book together, and we gave up half way and took what worked for us and carried it off into our writing journeys. :)

With my full time day job I couldn't do the artist way at all. With my schedule it was darn near impossible to keep up with it every morning and the dates were impossible too. Not really making excuses but it wasn't the right time for me either.

I hate excercises in books too. I did do a few for Story Genius because I had a WIP but then gave up on all that. But the lessons I learnt from that book were ingrained in my brain so that it has helped me write my wip anyway, without doing the excercises ( the story building thing, ) to the letter and in advance of drafting. Rather, it's helps me as I remember the main points *while* drafting

I'm reading Story Genius right now! I'm doing the exercises but VERY slowly. Normally I wouldn't do the exercises (I also dislike them in books), but I really need help developing my plot, so I'm trying!

@@canisfamiliaris4Yeah it's great isn't it? I watched numerous videos of Lisa Cron Interviews the listened to the audiobook, then bought the book, but kind of burnt out with it and started drafting. But what I found was, I'd indoctrinated my brain to apply her advice conciously, habitually and subconciously similiar to one review I saw on Goodreads where the reader said they were surprised that they somehow imbibed the principles without trying after reading it. ( Despite thinking they'd given up trying adhere the method religiously) I need to edit my review to say the same thing. Also I stopped drafting to have a few days off recently ( and catch up on housework , as I have a chronic illness so my brain can't be used after I do physical stuff) and I had an idea that came to me as I hadn't plotted except in a basic way for the rest of the book and because I read Story Genius I found myself asking the right questions at this point. What does she want internally? ( She wants help in this scene ) And it clicked into place that the person she is now finds it extremely challenging to ask for help. So now I know when I go back and edit if that I'll see through the lense of a very independent person. This isn't how Story Genius suggests doing it , but the other internal Misbelief ideas I had, didn't work for me which is why I gave up in it and I tried for 3 months. I had the general idea but not the exact Misbelief. It Took me a while to realise that the Misbeleif is like a protagonists deepest fear because in one of the chapters where Jenny Nash is thinking out loud about Ruby's Misbeleif she says this. I'm explaining that as that helped me because if your character has an EXTERNAL Misbelief you can get confused/ overwhelmed trying to think of an internal one. As Lisa Cron said in book, the Misbeleif is often a very simple thing. Also on her website blog or in a video I saw her say you need to just apply it in your own way. The book doesn't come across that way, but gearing that helped immensely

@@canisfamiliaris4 You got me thinking actually. I might even use what I have AS the backstory and the last two chapters of my protagonist as the beginning point because that might be more In Media's Res. It's hard to know ....I kind of was thinking about how Christy-Anne re-writes the book in a different file ...not sure how different the versions are, bit basically it got me thinking while writing that last comment to you, that I can make big changes given what I know from story genius ...because now that I at about 20k into a dual pov draft I feel like I only now getting to know my Protagonist, so I can re-evaluate where her story begins, based on Story Genius advice. Might read it a bit more again! Because as Lisa Cron says it's best to make changes before you become attached to the way you wrote it (all the precious hard- won sentences. ( She didn't word it like that ) Sorry long comments. I just really needed to talk to someone who understands Story Genius language 🤣🤣🤣

I've tried to do the Artists Way but honestly what mostly ticks me off about the book is the whole "philosophy" behind it. Honestly, as someone who isn't religious, it's VERY annoying that she's basically forcing you to "accept that the flow of creativity is God/Godliness/transcendental" or something. I'm trying to understand and remember it's an American book and a lot of people are religious and can find themselves in this, but it feels a bit like indoctrination/judgemental while I'm just trying read a self-help book on creativity. ANYWAY, I do really like the morning pages and have tried to keep doing those! I also like the artists dates, although I don't necessarily plan them, I already like going to exhibitions on my own and stuff and it really gives a lot of inspiration.

Its so hard to concentrate on let alone enjoy videos on this platform anymore as ALL no matter content or length are are interrupted LITERALLY every 10 to 20 seconds with and add at 10000 decibels. Its so obtrusive i usually just give uo in the video after a couple of minutes of being bombarded by no less than 20 ads. Sorry, but trying to enjoy your video and had my ears blasted 3 times in 30 seconds ..
