Can’t believe no one has done a video like this yet, it’s something I’ve thought of but haven’t tried because I don’t love the side car experience. This looks much better. Also can’t believe the pro iPads still aren’t PRO. There’s no way, it has to be coming. It just has to.

Honestly I don’t need MacOS on my iPad Pro. What I need is a cursor that is an arrow and a real finder app for the iPad and I would be happy to

option to click launch pad then have iPadOS experience would be a game changer. MacOS for heavy productivity, then switch over to "tablet mode" for casual use like watching RU-vid videos (because that's all the iPad is really good for compared to a full laptop)

I really wish Apple will either allow MacOS to run natively on iPads or create a touch based version of MacOS. This is what I’m looking for now. The new Surface Pro from Microsoft is the first time I’ve contemplated in purchasing from them, except I prefer the Apple ecosystem. Love the intro btw and now I’m a new subscriber. 😅

I have almost every Apple product till this day, but I bought a Surface Pro 11 last week. It is fantastic.

The last bit that file management is why people are asking for Mac OS on the iPad and also instead of Apps driven thinking as we do on iPad, it should be files driven on iPad and we could just do with the iPad only setup as well… it is the multitasking (without stage manager or with stage manager I don’t care but without the limits and restrictions of stage manager) and a few more tweaks to make it more files driven than apps driven and nobody would ask for the Mac OS to be on the iPad. Worked for 2.5 years on my iPad and made an iPad only desk setup. I also have the m1 iPad Pro… I bought the Mac mini m2 recently and it blew my mind… I find organisation in clutter of files and apps that I open with one flick on the Magic Trackpad and I am in mission ctrl… however when I am on the iPad the focus driven workflow that it has to offer makes me feel at home as I had done it for 2.5 years. It makes me more productive in the work that I am doing… but I feel restricted coz of the above factors.

If you are at home, you can use a bluetooth mouse to connect to sidecar in clamshell mode but you have to use the bluetooth mouse or trackpad and bluetooth headphones. Set it to optimise for the iPad's screen. You'll have to go to the desktop first to activate sidecar (mirror iPad screen) and then close the lid, then click the mouse that is connected to the MacBook to wake it. It'll wake to the mac lock screen on your iPad. Every time you want to use sidecar in clamshell mode, you have to do this. The advantage is that it will fill the iPad's 4:3 aspect ratio and optimise for it.

What app are you using for the Remote Desktop to the MacBook? I hear good things about Jump, but is there a better option?

I'm a long time windows user and you are literally blowing my mind right now and changing my opinion for all product. I might buy thapple if this feature comes irl especially the last sd card bit.

MacOS on iPad would kill the Macbook sure, but it would also kill the entirety of Microsoft's Surface line, along with all the 2-in-1 ultrabooks from every other hardware manufacturer. I only use PC and I can recognize this

Regarding your sound issue, I’ve been doing this for a few years… jumpdesktop works great and I get audio. I can edit in FCP and everything, and as long as my internet connection is solid i get near flawless playback.

People never seem to discuss the two elephants in the room - battery life and security model. I suspect the battery life by transplanting macOS on iPad would be pretty bad - iPadOS and iOS is super aggressive on pausing/terminating apps, which is not how macOS manages the processes. 13-inch MacBook Air has a significantly bigger battery than the 13-inch iPad Pro, and for a good reason. I agree the Files app is in an abysmal state, and 'pro' apps on iPads aren't great, as well as how iPadOS doesn't let you manage long running task, but I suspect the solution isn't as simple as just transplanting macOS. There has been attempts to have 2-in-1 OS, like Windows 8. And when it comes to Windows 2-in-1 devices they aren't doing amazing, and previous attempt of Windows+Android 2-in1 was cludgy at best. Desktop and Tablet experience is hard to merge.

The issue is just entirely the OS experience. Apple clearly wants to start with a tablet OS and add features over time, whereas with the Surface Microsoft just bolted a desktop OS to a touch screen. I hate using my Surface as a tablet since the UX is awful. I think Apple is 100% coming at things the correct way, it’s just that iPadOS will take time before it can hit feature parity with MacOS.

I've never been a pro macOS on iPad guy for these reasons: 1. There isn't enough i/o. A single port isn't going to cut it for everyday use 2. macOS isn't designed for touch, meaning you're almost forced to use it with a pencil, trackpad or mouse. I like using my tablet as a tablet 3. I feel like macOS would be a horrible experience on the smaller screens I'd love it if Apple kept making iPadOS more advanced, opening more up to software devs to be able to make more advanced apps and for them to promote app development at the sane time so that iPadOS gets macOS level apps. Heck, since they're on the M series chips, even just some way for the mac to run macOS apps would be great.

I've used the surface for 3 years. The interchangeability is fun for a month. After that the form factor is getting annoying. Apple is doing right for keeping their OS where it belongs. But I do think you should be allowed to install MacOS programs on iPadOS. There's no reason not to.

I think it's smarter to buy a desktop Mac (Mini, etc) and an iPad. iPad on the go, desktop at home.

The iPad is fine with iPad OS. If you exclusively use it for movie watching, reading, extra screen. If you need a laptop for work, just stick with a Macbook. I am contented with this setup. But Apple is also at fault by putting a powerful CPU on that thing and get people imagine stuff like putting macOS.

What software you used for it? And how is the config to access external? You should do a video about it. I tried to find in youtube several and several times. No one have a video explaining this configuration.

Windows Surface is a strong contender, have had the same iPad Pro since 2018 and I see no reason to change it. M4 why? Totally agree.

I’d love MacOs on my M1 iPad Air! I love my iPad though, I don’t like many things from Apple but iPads are the best tablets and MacBooks are the best laptops, especially from longevity. I still have my late grandmothers 2010 i5 15inch MacBook Pro and it still works fine for normal internet usage and some other harder stuff, even some gaming. My MacBook Pro is a 2018 13 inch perfectly fine, doesn’t even feel old. In my reseller business I also used to sell a load of MacBooks and old MacBooks are still good! Sucks that a 2006 MacBook is more usable than my 2010 Mac Pro but apart from that Apple kills every other laptop, tablet manufacturer when it comes to longevity. Not gonna switch back to iPhone from my Galaxy Flip though, nor am I gonna switch from my home built gaming pc to an iMac or something either.

This is exactly why there is no need to buy high end iPad… Very capable hardware for a mediocre OS! The iPad Air is just as capable as the pro for half the price.

Apple is a hardware company, it sells devices, that's where the main profit comes for them, that's what allows them not to sell user data in advertising market, as some others do. So it would be not exactly smart for them to blend 2 hardware categories into 1. Now what actually makes people prefer their devices - is the user experience, which is 90% in software: it has to be THAT good for us to choose their devices over a myriad of other options. That, in theory, would allow Apple to change their paradigm and switch to a software-profit company, and let us install their iOS, macOS etc. on a range of other devices, even from different manufacturers. Would you pay for iOS to have it on a Samsung? I think i would.

Long time Surface user, the Surface Pro is far from ever becoming a tablet. The kickstand is next to useless on anything other than a desk, and the keyboards are flimsy at best.

iPads not having macOS, or not being able to run apps made for iOS with full features is just Apple being Apple. No other company would release a calculate app and be like "We did it! We gave people what they wanted!" I think iPads are great. I have an iPad Pro, but I really just bought it for the bigger screen. I think actual Pro users would hate the new M4 iPad Pro since it can't really do many of the things that they want, or at least not smoothly.

Dual boot? You mean I have to turn off my device to launch another OS? What if I wanna use my pencil? Seems like a hassle. I'd rather one OS that does everything. But that being said, I don't want to compromise macOS by including touch support.

I’ve had a work Lenovo laptop since 2010 (X220 through to current Yoga X). Every time I use a MacBook I keep tapping the screen, then remember that they still don’t have a touch screen!

you probably already considered this but.... 1 ipad was conceived as a media consumption device. 2 why sell to one market when we can create two and sell more! 3 ipad OS is intentionally designed around a touch interface not a mouse or trackpad. 4 For security, ipad storage is in silos per application, unlike on Mac OS. 5 Ipad OS is designed to maximize battery life by limiting background operation of apps. So while Apple can profit, there will be no Mac OS on Ipad crossover.

I bought the new M4 IPad so I could stop carrying my work laptop everywhere. I work a ton in my car and on planes and this switch has been great. There are a few things I don’t like as you mentioned the file management software on the IPad is pretty lack luster. But for me other than that it’s been amazing and I can not beat the battery life. I can use it for a full day plus of work and still have battery left over. Where as if I use my Windows laptop it get like 2 hrs or so of battery out of it and need to take a charger everywhere with me.

I'm so with you on that last point. We need better file management on IOS and iPad OS. The current files app feels so limited.

Both iPadOS and macOS are using the same base system files, all the iPad needs is the macOS user interface and the support for the apps. It would be a larger OS install, but wouldn’t need to be as big as running both on an iPad.

Since the first big iPad Pro...all I have wanted was a base which was Mac and you docked the iPad for Screen and Camera. Pull them apart, iPad OS device and MacOS base which could be connected to any display with cable or wireless connection.

Congratulations! You’ve just invented MacBook 12! I’m still using one for sole purpose - screen sharing into my more powerful macs. It’s lighter than iPad with keyboard and more convenient in many ways (Cmd - Tab is translated into target host)

I think im going to go a mac mini so i can keep iOS development going and a surface or an iPad (depending on what they do with it) for on the go work, can always remote into the mac mini but the surface is right now a more practical device

The ability to have your primary Apple Home Server that you connect every thing too and only grab the local interface like the iPad glass screen to see and work on content means we are so much closer to Apple Home being a thing. This would also be nice so each person can have their own profile not that is the way it will be at first but maybe down the road we can boot multi profiles on family sharing devices! I gave up on MacOS on iPad and I ditched Macs altogether. I use Windows PCs and an iPad Pro 2018. The iPad it's just another way of doing things, the rest I get it done on Windows.

I was very reluctant to get into apple because I hate their phylosophy. Now it becomes more and more obvious for me that pretty much all (serious) apple users hate them, but it you want the best you have no other option, and Apple knows this and is milking it like hell

The m4 is too worth the upgrade if only for the OLED screen.

I don't mind the UI, I just want apps and features for power users. The iPad Pro is actually the iPad Plus - it has no feature or app that can't also be used on the other models. I have used a Surface Pro for over a year and I think a mobile-first UI like on the iPad is definitely the way to go. But just porting a few apps like final cut pro is not enough. There needs to be a way to either install Mac OS applications directly in iPadOS or at least a much more efficient way of porting those applications.

reason why you did not jump to get surface pro is because u are a tablet person and a photo edit person and a movie edit person. If you want to be a developer for market .. windows OS is pretty much the defacto standard.

The best video about the everyday use of the Apple Ecosystem… The moment you leave a desk the laptop is never used…i think “lap”top definition is now obsolete because of the “lap”pad Just put a Mac Mini on your desk and carry the 13” iPad with you all day. If you're just connecting to your mac using your ipad, you can't actually say that ur running macOS on ur ipad as ultimately its running on the mac and ur just accessing it through your ipad, like how you access a mac mini or a desktop using a monitor
