How does this craft book work? Is it good for writers as well as screenwriters? Is it good for plotters and plantsers? I used The Anatomy of Story to plot my latest project. Let's talk about the pros and cons of John Truby's The Anatomy of Story! Guest-starring my housemate's cat!
The Anatomy of Story is an engaging detail-packed book that covers: creating premises, basic 7-step story structure, characters, moral argument, story world, symbol web, plot, scene weave, dialogue, and scene construction. Though written specifically for screenwriters, many novel writers use its techniques as well!

This is so useful, especially because Anatomy of Story is one of the methods I'm planning to use for Nanowrimo this year! I think doing all of the pre-structure work will be helpful, since a lot of the methods I've used are more structure-focused, which means I then need to figure out how to retrofit all of the other pieces in an existing outline/story 😅

Yayy! I'm excited to hear how you find it in your plotting experiment! Yes the pre-structure work is awesome - I really like working through it :)

LOL at your cat in the blinds 😂 I think I need to go back and reread Anatomy of Story. It was a great book and super helpful, but there was so.much.information there was no way I was going to retain it all!! I also really need to check out Story Grid. It's on my TBR!

I view anatomy of story as a kind of problem solver for stories. The "basic" structure of plot, is pretty much "a character pursues a goal against one or more obstacles". The problem we run into, is that most writers tend to repeat the same story step (think slasher films, where they just repeat the step of the killer showing up and the protagonist running away). Truby gives us the 22 steps to use as tools, in order to get more unique story steps so we don't have to repeat ourselves. I also agree with his view that the three act structure, while most stories can be seen through that lens, is a virtually useless tool for story development. Most story teachers are about the broad strokes, whereas Truby is more about the specifics ("You can add symbols to your story" vs Truby's "here is a super precise method for developing a symbol web that will work in conjunction with your theme").

I totally agree! Truby is so specific and detailed and gives the tools to create an organic story. I really like his take on things; it's completely different from the other methodologies that I've tried

I think ‘problem solver’ is actually the best way to describe his method. For those who say it’s over complicated, a map that covers ALL stories would inherently be complicated! And if you reject his method, you end up hitting the very problems that his book helps to solve! In my mind, John Truby is nothing short of a genius who has pioneered one of the most important works on one of the most fundamental subjects of human life.

The 22 beats are just to incorporate in the story but it's flexible and it's a complement to the 3act structure and I loved the symbolweb 😄🔥

Every craft book will say much of the the same things stated in different ways. Many craft books are focused on a few ideas and must glance over other points. Few books cover it all well. There is one craft book for advanced writers that covers everything and puts each craft consideration into sharp, practical focus. Read Larry Brooks' book, Story Engineering. I don't know Brooks but I do know usable advice when I read it.

Read 'Anatomy of a Story' but not for me because it is about screenwriting. Possibly every example is from a film. No matter what we want to believe, films are not the same as novels. Think about it; a film script runs to around 100 pages with a lot of white space, leaving a lot for the director to interpret and change, and the whole story is told in 100 minutes. A much better example of story structure for novelists is 'Save the Cat writes a Novel' by Jessica Brody. And if you want to write to the next level read almost any book by Donald Maass, especially 'The Fire in Fiction' or 'Writing a Breakout Novel'. These will help elevate your writing above the mundane.

That's a perfectly valid opinion - it's definitely not a book for everyone. You're right that every example is from film and there are of course big differences between film and novels. For me, I believe all good stories - no matter what medium they're delivered in - share common elements and offer useful lessons in storytelling. A screenwriter and author could, for example, have the exact same pre-writing process for developing characters, although the execution of those characters would be extremely different. I really like Save the Cat Writes a Novel as well. Those are interesting recommendations I've heard before but haven't read. I may check them out.

@@NicoleWilbur this is not exacty true. "the godfather" is based on a Novel, the Tom Sawyer example ist based on Novels, Pride and Prejudice is based on a Novel. The way John Truby describes his methods is independent of Screenplay techniques. the Save the Cat structure was created by Blake Snyder for films. But we can use his Ideas for novel writing too. the question is wether the way the methods are described resonates with one self and that is very individual. Thank you for your recomendations. I just bought "Save the Cat writes a Novel". Many key concepts in John Truby's book and Jessica Brody's are the same with different names, but Brody explains it in a much easier way. It is really helpful to read both books.

@@thecaptn1758 Great point about the adaptations! I completely agree that the Anatomy of Story is incredibly valuable for novel writers. But, as you point out, not fo every novel writer :)
