I loved this chatty, introspective video! I think I need to try this challenge for myself because I'm the WORST at consistently reading. Thanks, Ariel ✨
i read for an hour before bed every day! i'm glad that you tried this out because that routine is personally what works for me. i love winding down at the end of a long day and just relaxing with some escapism!
I kind of dig how you represent bookish people that struggle to read sometimes. I love literature and my room is a mess because not all of my books fit in my actual bookcase but most of the time I only read on the train. I'm lucky that I'm often on a train to travel to my parents or my friends but otherwise it's challenging to read as much as I'd like. Incorporating a specific time or place to read is really valuable and I hope with all my being that I'll be able to find the space and time throughout my life to read.
Loved the casual nature of this video, and how it highlights how simple incorporating something new into our life can be. I've recently been making an effort to step away from electronics and pick up a book after 9pm and feel so much calmer because of it, and like you, it has reminded me just how much I love reading 💡Now it's turning colder here in England, I may add some hot chocolate into the mix for extra cosiness!
the hot chocolate thing is something i can DEFINITELY get behind! but right?? its been such a wonderful reminder of what can happen if I actually spend some daily time reading!
Haha I just reread Harry Potter for the first time since I was a kid.. it is still just as magical. Now I'm reading The Cuckoos Calling which is her crime series written under Robert Galbraith ... it's okay but no where near as good.
I don’t think you understand how happy it makes me to see you back making videos! I’m so excited for everything that will be coming through your patreon profile! along with the content/things you’ll be making! I’m so ridiculously happy for you. my heart is swollen with love and adoration for you! I look up to you as a person and creator. you inspire me so much. to read out of my comfort zone and achieve things! okay this long and sappy lol. but basically what I SHOULD’VE said is that I kind of do this? it’s the only time I can get a chunk of my reading done and I get so excited and look forward to it. but still used my phone while reading and after, which I need to stop. but I loved this video and your breakdown as to why along with your bullet journal!
Reading before bed has always been my main reading time since I was a kid, but the problem with that is that is a have terrible self control and don't know when to stop. I will read for hours into the night, sacrificing my sleep to get to the next chapter, but then that chapter inevitably ends on some sort of cliffhanger, and I just have to know what happens so I continue. I need to either learn better self control or find a better time to read. My sleep schedule depends on it!
idkjustk Maybe try reading on the bus/train/in the car on the way to school or work or listen. If you drive yourself, maybe read in the car via audiobooks?
Samantha Cook I live really close to work, so my commute is only about 5 minutes, so it's really not long enough to get too far into the story. Thank you for the advice though! I appreciate it!
My habit of daily reading took a hit once I became a full time teacher. Lately I've been missing my connection to booktube and leisure reading. Thank you for sharing this tangible way to get back into it again.
This is such a coincidence! I recently watched a different video talking about the importance of reading and I decided to start reading at 11pm before I go to bed. I've found that every night, I want to start reading earlier and that I want to read more than just the one chapter goal that I set for myself. I've been enjoying it so far! I hope that I'm able to keep it up.
Yay for more reading after ten! You get to a really important thing about reading that some people don't get: for big readers it is their leisure activity. Instead of TV or whatever, readers turn to books during their downtime.
you have very quickly become my favorite booktuber! I'm loving the longer, more in depth videos about books, reading, art, booktube and so on... and I'm really excited to follow along
the reason why I love the concept of #readingafter10 so much is because I personally have to push myself to read because I always forget how much i love it and that it is at least just as enjoyable as being on my phone or watching netflix
Wow this video came at the perfect time! I missed reading and have been trying (not so actively) to get back into it because I have a list of books I know I'd like to read. You gave some really helpful tips that make it easy to get started. Thanks ariel!! :)
Scheduling time to read is an interesting idea that I’ve seen a lot online when people post videos about how to read more books. I’ve yet to try it but I want to now.
When I finished my degree in the summer I tried to get myself back into reading before bed and it's such a nice habit to get into. Some nights I literally only manage 2 pages and others I read 60+! It seems to help me sleep better as well. Also this vid was so lovely and casual and cosy!!
Omg, you here! I found your channel earlier today and subscribed! What a coincidence! ~And I WISH I was asleep at 10, wow, goals. I usually sleep between 11 and 1 XD
Your comment on brains thinking to TV or reading as a habit to do for bed is so true! I NEVER watch TV anymore, I just started reading every time I had spare moments instead of sitting in front of the TV that I probably have not watched an episode of anything in a good year and a half!
Hopefully cool dreams and no nightmares! I don't often read at bedtime, I prefer to read by a window with the sun coming in, but maybe I should give bedtime reading another try, at least for a bit to see what happens
I actually like this idea. I love to read but my reading habits are so out of sync, that I am going to give this a try. I think this will help me in two ways: 1.) get my reading back on track, and 2.) Help me with using less technology on a day to day basis. Thank you for making this video. Great Video!
Totally off the reading topic but I recently started trying to get healthier by juicing every day and trying to cut out junk food from my diet... after a few days I didn't WANT the packet of salt & vinegar crisps I usually smashed every day after work!! It used to be a huge craving of mine.. it's amazing how quickly our bodies adjust!! ANYWAY... I definitely want to incorporate more reading before bed into my life too so thank you for the inspiration!!!
Another good thing to work on, and good for the brain, to get off technology, is to learn a 2nd language, and/or play a musical instrument, whatever you find you enjoy the most, or easiest, perhaps the piano. I found an awesome 2nd language site, you can do it just as little or much as you feel like each day, and review as much as you want. It's geared very easy to do, at a kids level, and yet its not. It's at duolingo. I started learning german a week ago, and love this!
This is way late since this video was posted. But I just wanted to say that I feeling very unproductive today, so I was looking through back my liked videos to find something that would motivate me and I came across this video. It really did help! I love this whole concept. I love how forgiving you were with yourself throughout the whole thing and I just love how it shows that making an effort to do something everyday can quickly become a habit.
so its 12:16, ive just home from seeing Hamiltion (yes, low key braggin), ive got a bowl of soup (in a harry petter bowl btw) and im watching an Ariel Bisette video- lifes pretty good rn
for a slow reader like myself this is highly motivating! thank you for always making insightful and helpful content, ariel. (also i'm LOVING the background)
I’ve been bullet journalling for the last two years and I LOVE it! Not planning on abandoning my journal☺️ I need to try and do this during the weekends, the idea is amazing. 👍🏼
I agree with you! I finished my masters degree in June 2018 and I immediately started reading "Les Miserables" on my kindle every night. This was the moment I would be looking forward to every single day. What I loved is that Les Miserables is so well written, and so long, it gave me a piece of mind to be able to go back to that story I love so much before bed. I since then stopped being so constant but will definitely be picking this habit back up really soon x
Loved the relaxed one-take video concept! I followed your reading progress on Instagram, I’m so glad you found the experiment useful :D what you say is really interesting- i think I’m gonna try to do the experiment myself, I’ve been sooooo low on my reading lately :( the thing is, when I have some free time to do so I think “I should be “more productive”, i should be writing” as in, instead of reading other people’s stories, finish my own- and in all that mess I don’t end up doing either one or the other!
I started my reading habit again because you posted about reading after 10 and im really enjoying it! This idea just really clicked and like you said now its a habit!
I always read before I go to bed and it's the best thing ever! I don't go on my phone afterwards (well no that's a lie, because I read ebooks on my phone but I ignore all the apps expect for iBooks), I read until I have trouble keeping my eyes open and then I just put my phone away and fall asleep almost straight away, it's great! I used to have so much trouble falling asleep.
I got so excited when you started doing this bacause I've been reading before going to bed for forever and it's such a great habit! Even when I'm busy with school and don't read during the day it's crazy how much reading I can still do anyways. It also helps me fall asleep a lot faster so that's a plus. Hope you keep doing it!!
i read before bed every day. somedays i read like 200 pages, somedays only 30. somedays i read a hole book, but, hey, it was good (was Kindred, from Octávia E. Butler). It's really great to hear your story! It's wonderful :) ~Gabi
I've not been reading much lately because I've just moved to the UK for my exchange but I bought a book today and am so excited to get reading again. This video reminded me how good reading before bed is for my mental health. Actually I'm just happier in general when I'm consistently reading.
I feel so much smarter after I watch your videos! So much better about ignoring the "you must read THIS much" that's part of the book community and just reading for myself to read good books. I didn't do #readingafter10 but I have been trying to set up consistent times and places to read... and I've been reading not more but... better? If that makes sense!
YES YES YES to all of this! As a teacher, I've been struggling to find time to read and would notice that I just turn on Netflix when I'm tired. But, I've been reading 2 books at once by 1) listening to the Winter audiobook every morning when I'm getting ready or on my daily commutes & 2) Reading War Storm every night before I go to bed. I haven't watched Netflix since last week. In fact, I'm more than halfway through both HUGE books, and I just am falling in love with reading again.
I’m doing that same exact experiment! I’m not always perfect and that’s fine, but I’m trying very hard to read (or write and draw) before bed and NOT use my phone. I must say I’m sleeping a lot more and I feel less tired, I’m glad I decided to try 🍃
I try to do something similar with my reading. Especially during the semester, the hour or 45 minutes before bed is the only time I can dedicate to physically reading a book. Audiobooks can fill other parts of the day but sitting down with a book can’t fit in as easily. It also helps me go to sleep. Being on my phone can keep me up a longer but reading is a perfect way to decompress and fall asleep when you should. Great vid!
this is awesome! my freshman year of college, I was having lots of problems falling asleep at night so I would read right before bed to tire myself out. it was great, and this is making me want to make the time to do it again!
I'm so late to this video but I loved your concept, and I'm going to try it out. I think its all too easy to be guilted against reading, or turned against it. Bravo to you for trying this, and thankyou for putting this up for us to see!
I'm an undergrad right now and I also try to read every night (Fridays and Saturdays are hard for me to read too!) but honestly its such a stress-relieving, nice getting ready for bed habit!
I bought my bullet journal a year ago and still use it, haha. The positive thing about a bullet journal is that you can design it for your use, so change it up to make it useful!
As a child and early teen I always read before bedtime. We didn't have smartphones and tablets and laptops back then(c.25 years ago). I think this is a fantastic idea I think I might give this a go for the rest of October.
yep, this is what i do (although i generally start around midnight, and just go until im falling asleep). def helps to get a lot read. something to add later, try reading in bed when you wake up on a day when you dont have any plans. those saturday mornings are some of the most relaxing because i can be totally unapologetic about how long im staying in bed while getting a good chunk of a book read
Reading a little bit every day is the main reason I complete as many books as I do. My top reading times are during my lunch break at work and before bed. I also sometimes read on public transportation, though that's not always possible. Glad to see you making videos again :)
Being a nursing student I have trouble reading for fun. But I have recently been buying audio books. My drive to school is 45minutes one way so I can get my reading in during my drive. Finding some balance is really helpful. I love books and was so upset I have no time to read, but now I feel like I'm not skipping out on reading.
I know this is a while later, but I just wanted to to say how much I love borrowing audiobooks from my library. The app Axis 360 or Libby connect to your library and you can check out audiobook files that expire in three weeks. It is nice because it's free 😅
I think I'm going to give this kind of thing a try. I tend to be a binge-read-everything and then nothing-for-a-whole-month reader. It's the same thing with my writing. Writing ton and then falling off the wagon. If I can at least get 1/2 hour of writing/reading in per day though, then at least I won't have to feel like I'm completely starting from scratch when the inspiration hits.
The new iOS update has made it SO MUCH easier for me to put my phone away in the evening! I have it on "downtime" from 10.30pm - 8am and a time limit for certain app "subgroups". Also using the moment app to actually see how much time you spend on your phone is scary!
This was interesting! The ONLY time i have to read throughout the school year is before bed and I’ve been doing that for years. It is also a wonderful time to decompress/relax
This school year as been the first in a VERY long time that I allowed myself to read leisurely during the school year. I usually have to put my personal reading on hold to make sure I stay focused on school work and will maybe pick up 1 or 2 books in a 3 month period (versus during the summer when I am finishing ~10 books a month). So far, it has been fantastic! In my first month back in school, I've managed to finish around 5 books while also managing to do my school readings. This has been through the use of Libby and really trying out ebooks and audiobooks. I've always been a hardcore physical copy reader. Reading on a cellphone screen didn't seem like to fun to me (and I still hate sometimes haha) but it has made it so much easier for me to read! I am constantly on the metro, going to my internship or volunteer work and I can easily get through 2 hours of an audiobook on my way there and back. Using Libby has also helped me because I can switch between books easily, not having to worry about carrying multiple copies of books! For me, it isn't about necessarily making a specific time to read - it is making sure of using my free time (when I am cleaning, doing errands, during transportation hours, etc.) that I try my hardest to make sure I read. 10 minutes here, an hour there, 30 minutes here, another hour there. It never ceases to surprise me just how fast I get through content when I just make sure I make an attempt to read a little bit everyday!
I have also made this a habit a while ago (I think during exam season last year cause it helped me relax SO much) and since then I've stuck with it for the most part. It's just the easiest and nicest thing ever, the best end to a day, gets you in a good mood, makes you sleep better and if you're not tired already, just read till you are. I've kinda always preferred frequent reading to binge reading.
Or for the morning people out there - it’s fun to spend the first two hours of your day eating breakfast, drinking coffee, doodling and listening to an audiobook. Makes ur day like 10 times better.
I've always struggled to focus when reading and therefore don't read much but reading before bed was the way I could commit to a book. Usually I need to become invested early in the book too for best outcome. Another thing that helped was when I started leaving my phone in the living room on airplane mode earlier this summer!
yes!! Team reading after 10! I usually read before bed. However, sometimes within 5 minutes, I'm already falling asleep aha! Once I get sleepy, that's my queue to go to bed. But yea it really is hard to not go on your phone before you go to sleep. However, there are ways, you can put it on airplane mode or put your phone far away from you. This gives you enough time to think and ask yourself do I really need to go get my phone, etc. Happy reading! :)
This is so funny that you said 10:30 isn’t that late because I’m asleep by then 😂 but I really like this idea and I need to start doing it again! It really helps and it helps with the mindless scrolling of Instagram before bed.
This is a very interesting experiment. I like the idea you had of sharing yourself falling back in love with reading. I hope this goes well for you, Ariel.
Reading before bed really helped me fall asleep alot easier, now I can't fall asleep without reading a little bit though... My mind used to race when I laid down for bed and I would just lay there thinking random thoughts, but once I started to read before bed once my eyes started to close or droop I'd stop and turn the light off and then think about what I read and next thing I knew I was asleep. However I still can't STAY asleep...I sleep for maybe 1-1.5 hours before waking up again then it takes another hour to fall back asleep, and then the cycle repeats throughout the night and I never truly get enough solid sleep.
I always say I read before bed as in the past I have turned screens off at least an hour before bed, but lately I keep putting it off (because I think it isn't the easy option in comparison to checking my phone) yet when I do make myself do it I remember how much I always enjoy it.
i’ve been enjoying reading before bed bc during the day my brain is usually frazzled and i can’t get myself to sit down and focus on one thing for so long
Love that ! Lately I've been trying to spend less time on my computer because I find that it's not great for my creativity (something I picked up from the book "Steal Like an Artist" which I think you recommended a long time ago haha), so this definitely speaks to me right now !
I used to read everyday before going to bed and just felt calmer falling asleep than being on my phone for 30 minutes. I think I will pick this habit up again after your video.
