Examples _ you asked for it! You ask, what is the most romantic thing I ever read? Well, I’ve been reading romance books since I was in middle school- over 40 years; I have a book closet that I call my 10k-books-in-the-closet (pretty close), because I buy books- I prefer paper to e-books- which I discovered after reading a book by Jaid Black, but I do read both. Her Trek Mi Q'an series is hilariously great and steamy hot, hot, hot! And I prefer to support book stores, not Amazon. Trying to pin down the most romantic would take some serious thinking, so I’ll just stick to the books in my pandemic pile, 1 contemporary, 1 historical- all the books I’ve read since lockdown! Contemporary: Isn’t It Bromantic by Lissa Kay Adams- #4 in The Bromance Book Club- name of the first in the series. The premise is a group of guys, movers and shakers in Nashville ,TN form a [secret] book club that uses romance novels as manuals to help them be better partners in love. The plot- a Russian hockey player recruited by the local NHL team finds out that his estranged wife is in town. His bros didn’t know he was married! His wife, also Russian, who has been living in Chicago on a student visa, recently graduated from college with a masters in journalism. They grew up together in a small Siberian town; he married her to save her after her father disappeared- in Putin’s Russia. The book reveals the twists and turns of their shared history and how they get past the noncommunication in the relationship to reach their HEA. Most memorable line (at the end): “We may not speak Russian, but we know sex sounds when we hear them.” 😊😊😊 _ read for context! Historical: I just finished a short story, The Christmas Angle by Carla Kelly, about a guy in the Royal Navy, on half pay during the Peace of Amiens (Napoleon has been exiled to Elba, but is amassing supporters, which will lead to his escape, crowning as emperor and what we now call the Napoleonic Wars), who is one of those people who remember everything they ever read and a young lady who is the poor relation and goes to live with her pregnant sister- a vicar’s wife expecting her 5th, to help with the younger children. He is recommend by an officer from his ship, also on half pay, who is a member of the local aristocratic family as a tutor to the vicars 2 oldest during the chaos of the Christmas season. He was born on the wrong side of the blanket in Scotland, but managed to use his abilities to make a name for himself in the navy; he doesn’t think he’s good enough for her. She’s clear-eyed and open and nice. Their journey together is sweet, but not syrupy _ and I just found out, is the beginning of a series: the St. Brenden series, which I am ordering now! I started out with Mills & Boon, then Harlequin; I love many categories in the genre: current/contemporary, paranormal, fantasy, erotica, sci-fi, historical, mystery, military, etc. My least favorite time periods- Tudor England and the French Revolution; oddly enough after the revolution into the Napoleonic era, which coincides with the regency period in England (Bridgerton series anyone?) is my favorite. I have read Beverly Jenkins, although not in recent years, and I read Casey’s Red White and Royal Blue when it first came out. Lorraine Heath is an absolute fav- on my auto-buy list. I could write forever if I tried to list all of them, so I’ll not do that. I told someone who tried to ridicule me for reading romance that the HEA is the end; the story is in how they got there and that’s more real than Stephen King horror (no shade). And I told someone else who tried to ridicule me in the romance section of BN, no less, that the romance genre was writing about ‘me too’ waaay before it was a hashtag (btw- I’m not on twitter) . Happy reading, whatever you like... But wait, there's more...

I just want to say that I'm French, so English is my second language, and even I was shocked by the writing in Gothikana. Like I'm not kidding, I think I could write a book in English with less mistakes. At first, I thought I was stupid and just didn't know any English, but after a few chapters, I realised it was just plain bad and it felt like I was reading a draft of a book written in a week. 😂😂😂
@jamesduggan7200
@jamesduggan7200 Год назад
The NY Time publishes periodically an editing quiz that is heavy on grammar. Usually, I do well relative to the other takers, but rarely as high as a typical passing grade in school. So, I try to avoid criticizing because I realize I am vulnerable to being criticized. Also, some things, like split infinitives, danglers, and mixed metaphors, are commonly acceptable. IMHO it's best to read beyond the printed words to hear what is hidden there trying to reach us.
@chloedile9769
@chloedile9769 Год назад
@@jamesduggan7200 I realize I can be criticized, and I actually want to, because it is what will make me improve. But also, I don't want to publish a book. See, I think that when you are an author, you have to have a certain standard / level of language. If you don't have it and the story is very very good, then maybe you can get your draft corrected by the publisher. I am all for reading behind what is written, to think beyond that (I am currently studying English at university, so I kind of have to anyway), but when there is no meaning, you can't create one out of nowhere, the author still has to give you something to work with. As Emma said, when you see sentences like "It was new, which means it was recent.", what do you want to take away from it? Of course it is just my opinion, but I think we should be judgemental towards art/literature, because we cannot just pretend that every piece of literature ever written has the same value. And honestly, I never finished this book because even beyond the words, there is honestly nothing to learn / to appreciate in there. Even the themes aren't completely understandable... Dark academia is supposed to be a critique of elitism in academia, and this one was just not that, but is was also nothing else... But of course this is just my opinion 😊

@@jamesduggan7200 Thank you for you advice / encouragement, and I just wanted to clarify that eventhough I critiqued the writing of the book, I am not judging the author as a person, because I aknowledge that what I said can be taken as a critique of the individual, which is absolutely not what I meant to do. I could see it because they forgot to delete the original. And the author gushed about her editor, which I found puzzling (both the gushing and the editor 😅). I loved your critique of Gothikana and I'm with you completely, Emma. Writing and grammar are important for me, especially in a published work to be read by the public. If I was an author I would wish to put out the best works I could, without obvious grammatical errors. Punctuation, I'm obsessed with punctuation, sometimes I'm sure writers have never heard of the comma or the paragraph! Just jump up and down and scream.

I almost bought Gothikana, but thankfully I read the preview on Amazon first and was immediately alerted to the typos and poor writing. Saved myself some money and disappointment, hearing your review really brought it home haha.

This was so funny to watch! I love the romance genre but it can be so difficult to find a book that check all the right boxes. Also would it be weird to assume that Emmie, you strike me more as a historical romance kind of girl?? If the genre ever peaks your interest, I’d recommend reading something by Lisa Kleypas or Tessa Dare! P.S. love the bangs

Hi Emma, would like to see you reading and sharing your thoughts on some Georgette Heyer's regency romance books in your next vlog. For instance, The Grand Sophy or Frederica.

Hey Emma! I don't know if you've read the Brown Sisters trilogy by Talia Hibbert, but for me all 3 books (especially the last one) tick every romance box for me! I think you'd like them :)

I love reading romances especially after reading a classic or fantasy. Always go with no expectations. I honestly saw those covers and I haven’t read those book and I knew you’d hate them lol Try some Mariana Zapata (slow burn).
