For today's #Vlognukah video, I tried out 3 different baby clothes rental services! We've been trying to buy secondhand baby clothes as much as possible but I wanted to explore renting baby clothes too and give my honest review about the prices, the experience overall, and, of course, what the clothes were like. ✨ Have you rented clothes for yourself or your baby before? I’d love to hear about your experiences and whether you think it’s worth it!

I can see maternity clothing working really well as a subscription thing. You only really need maternity clothes for a few months and then they can be returned.
@katfoster845

Also, adult women's sizing is much more specific than baby sizing. If a babygro is a bit long in the legs, it doesn't really matter too much. You're unlikely to have a friend who's your size and has the same taste as you a few months ahead in pregnancy so you can get all their stuff second hand.
@DieAlteistwiederda

I agree maternity clothes make a lot more sense than baby clothes to me. I don't have nor do I ever want to have kids but pretty much 80%of everything my nephew and nieces wore as babies and up until about them entering school was secondhand. It just doesn't make sense to get them all new things when babies grow out of stuff so fast and it's so easy to just pass it on to someone who happens to have a baby that fits into the "old" clothes. I'm the only child out of three that had to get a fair amount of new things because I was absolutely not planned and our parents had me later in life when most people around them were finished with having kids for a while already as well. Even then they still tried to find a lot of used things to not be wasteful. Now I'm an adult and most things I get are secondhand from somewhere and I pass on things too.

That’s what I thought but I’m glad I’ve got a fair amount of larger-than-prebaby-body clothes as my body is a completely different size now. 18 months PP and hate the way my old clothes fit. Though I only bought one specifically maternity clothing (jeans) item - everything else I just bought a size 12/large.

I know we have baby carrier rentals locally but given charity shop prices I don't see the same for baby clothes I would like to offer it as a "value add " for childcare, if I ever get to run my own place

I’m sure they’re also a lot more difficult to find at charity shops, whereas charity shops have loads of baby clothes to choose from

Hey Hannah, While I followed your whole pregnancy and all the stuff that went before, I was just rooting for you so much and am just so happy that you have a healthy baby now. I sew clothes for my children and considered sending you something made from my fabric leftovers as I do that regularly in my life, even with people I know less about than you essentially. And I like your clothing vibe in general, you obviously like picking outfits and such. But it just felt a bit stalker, so I didn't. But seeing you react to these brands that are just my favorite and very much like the stuff I make, I thought I'd just give you the option: would you like some brightly colored joggers from fabric leftovers? If you have a Po box or something I'll send it to you. Congrats on caring for a new world citizen!

Hoping to be a foster parent someday, I think these services could be superhelpful in that situation so you dont have to keep a fully stocked wardobe for children of any age on hand. It's great that you order stuff for particular sizes and to the childrens preferences as needed! I bet older kids would really enjoy being able to do some of the shopping and pick their own clothes online. Glad to know these are out there :)

I think the biggest thing for me would be living in fear of staining or damaging the clothes as I didn't own them. If I own something and they roll around in grass and get stains, it might stop me from selling it on, but that's not the end of the world, whereas if it is rented, I would feel guilty.

This is not a service that is available in my country, but I can imagine it being very useful in more rural areas where we don't have access to second hand shops. Also if you could get deliveries on a schedule that matches the age of your child and the season... That would be a big time saver for busy parents.

I think the baby clothes rental subscription model is a really interesting idea. I feel like it makes more sense than the rentals for adult clothing since babies grow so quickly. Someone else in the comments mentioned it, but I feel like this would be really helpful for people who don’t have access or time to shop for second hand baby clothes whether they’re in a more rural area or the parents are working full time or multiple jobs or whatever. I also understand it feels kind of expensive for something you don’t get to keep and has presumably been worn before, but it does still seem less expensive than buying new clothes or even some second hand clothes. I think maybe some of these companies obviously need to grow and improve some things, but I do think it’s a really interesting idea especially for people who don’t get many hand me downs or who don’t have access to buying nice second hand clothes.

It seems like you could essentially "rent" baby clothes by buying second hand and then re-selling. What you're paying for here is the shipping and the time saved by not having to shop.

I haven't finished the video yet, but just wanted to say age related clothing sizes for kids are so weird to me. In the Netherlands kids sizes correspond to your kids' height, which is also not perfect of course (you can be a skinny or thick kid at the same height) but feels more logical somehow!

For the mentality around buying versus renting I think it's more to do with price, like if the cost for renting is the same as cost for buying why wouldn't you just buy it? I think the mentality is to do with the idea that if I'm renting something it should be saving me money versus buying the same thing. So if you're paying the same amount buying clothes for Rowan second hand as the per item price on the rental sites it definitely makes sense to just keep buying from second hand shops rather than using the rental companies.
@millijames
@millijames Год назад
I found that rental was definitely a good idea newborn to 18 months but then after that I found the monthly payment was more than buying up a couple of sizes and letting her grow into them (buy as much as possible second hand and pass on to others etc).

Owning an item of clothing vs renting it : Owning : I can sell it once I no longer need it (but until then it requires storage and time to find someone who wants it), or give it to a family member/friend, sentimental value around keeping the item Renting : I don't have to dispose of it (less responsibility to make sure the item is properly cared for) I think renting baby clothes makes a lot of sense given that you only keep them for so long ! No kids in my life, so this reminds me of my inner questions around owning books vs taking them from the library
@sillysoz

I have twins so need a fair amount of clothes! Vinted, charity shops and baby-specific 2nd hand markets (Little Pickles is one we have here) have been my go-to, as well as friends and family with slightly older babies passing stuff on. However I won't be having anymore either, so will either sell, donate or pass these down myself too :) Vinted is great for finding your favourite brands, lots of user-friendly filters (e.g. twin sets!) and for creating bundles from people's 'shops' to save postage too :)
@isag4999
@isag4999 Год назад
One thing that also factors into the "owning is better than renting" is the fact that if you own it you can sell it again, meaning: if you spend 2 bucks on a piece of second hand clothing you might be able to re-sell it for an equal or slightly smaller amount thus making it definitely the smarter investment (if you want to call it that)

@mmi1083

I am skeptical for the rentals for kids. As you experienced, wrong fit is a big issue. For adults size are somewhat stable and there are usually size guides with measurements, for kid sizing is very generic and it is much harder to measure them and they are constantly changing. When you find something that works well you do not want to give it back after just a month! Another consideration is that kids old enough to actively play outside, feed themselves and do crafts often ruin their daily clothes -- random stains, holes and general rough look. I personally still dress my kids in such clothes, but I don't think that rental can reuse them for other clients.

@tinnie75

I'd like to hear you talk a bit more on how you feel about renting clothes for your baby vs renting clothes for yourself. Because I know you've rented clothes for yourself but that also comes with that "I'm paying but I'm not going to own it" thing. But in the case of adult clothes, unless it's for a special occasion, then owning it makes more sense because you're not gonna easily grow out of it.

I really like this concept. It could be great for some families, I agree with the mentality of owning the item. It's hard to wrap your head around, you know it can be cheaper shopping for them yourself. With any subscription you pay extra as it saves on time and you're paying someone else to look for the items. You're partly paying for something you don't see in way.

I think it makes total sense that we feel like there’s more value in buying clothes because there literally is. Buying means not only do you have it, but you can sell it and potentially make money too. I guess it’s kinda like buying/renting a house. I personally love the idea but do struggle to get over that hurdle. I think that’s why I’d only ever rent a really expensive out of my budget item for a one off occasion, a bit like you said in regard to the Graceful Changes subscription!

RE ownership v rental mentality, I like to think of it in terms of the cost is for the usage. So if that couple quid goes towards it being used as many times during the same period of time, regardless of whether you own it or rented it, then it's been worthwhile especially if the rental service is genuinely then passing it onto another renter after you. And unless you have someone you're specifically handing them down to when your baby has outgrown them (like in the case of your cousin handing down to you), then there's no real benefit to owning them *right now.* So if space is an issue or uncertainty over having another child, and if you have the budget without a lot of other options (like if you aren't gifted much) then I think renting is a pretty decent alternative.

recently my brother and his wife had their second child and my mom showed me some of the old baby clothes she had saved from when my brother was a couple months old and from when i was a baby and it just felt like a really sweet and special experience to see like these clothes still in our lives and im hoping to get to take some of them for my own kids at some point ! i feel like owning clothes gives you some more options with what you can do with the pieces ! they can be reused with other children, passed on to friends and loved ones, and adjusted and modified to last a bit longer as your baby grows if youve got that sort of time. i like the idea of (if i know im done having kids and i dont have anyone to give them to) repurposing some of the fabric from the baby clothes ? maybe keeping pieces for a scrapbook or sewing a blanket from squares of them :) i definitely feel like i could see renting being helpful for if you dont have anywhere to store a lot of clothes so you can just keep the ones youve bought or been gifted for whatever you want to do with them and you can cycle some basics

The outfits looked SO CUTE on Rowan! Looovee all the rainbow items. I really like the idea of renting clothes, and actually rented some items for myself over the past few months (for themed parties and formal events and stuff). I enjoyed the experience! However, for some reason, I was also a bit nervous sometimes and felt like I needed to super careful while wearing the clothes: because I don't actually owned the items and had to return them (I was quite nervous about spilling wine on a rented dress during a dinner party). I think that owning rather than renting feels 'better' to me because, when I pay for a piece of clothing and own it, it becomes my responsibility. The only consequence of me spilling on a piece of clothing or damaging it is that I can't wear it anymore. If I can't clean or repair the item, I can still repurpose it or recycle it or whatever. However, with renting clothes, I'm responsible for keeping the clothing in a good condition so that others can wear it after I return it. I've noticed that this is something that makes me nervous and it's often what keeps me from renting clothing. It's interesting to think about the mentality around renting clothes!

I have a 17 month old and I also get most of her clothing secondhand (friends' children, poshmark, and my local Buy Nothing Group). I think the rental idea is good if you don't want to hang onto any of the baby clothes or you live in a really small space and don't want to store extra. I personally like "buying" or being gifted secondhand because you still help out the planet and save money but you don't have to worry about what fits now vs. later. If something is too big you can just wait a month or two. And you can pass it along when you're done with it. I have two bins of clothes I'm keeping for a potential second child (and just the two!) but everything else I pass along to others.

Renting clothes for children sounds like such a good idea since they grow so quickly, but I think I might want 2 kids as well, so it feels like you might as well buy clothes to save for the second kid? Especially if the cost ends up being similar. And then you can be the person that passes on hand me downs to your own friends and family so it isn’t too wasteful. I don’t have a kid yet, and I don’t think there will be anyone in my life with kids to receive hand me downs from. I’ll probably end up buying baby clothes.

Even if you don't have another child yourself, you can hand down the clothes to a friend's child or one of your sibling's, or a colleague even ! I feel like there is some humanity in there, whereas it doesn't feel as humanized (apart from the last shop you reviewed, the one that looked more second-hand). It's just clicks and the post. So I don't know if there is a mentality to be changed around buying and owning. I also loath how our life has become monthly-plans. The music we listen to, the films and series we watch, the cars we drive, the roof over our head, the food we eat, one day to the next, you could just lose everything. Now that i've written that last sentence, I'm thinking it might just be why we think owning is better.

I love this concept! Although I agree, only if you plan to have no more babies! I love the idea in my head that this piece of clothing I'm putting away in storage may be worn by another baby one day. It makes it so much less upsetting when she no longer fits into that cute outfit I only bought for her a month ago! Yes yes yessss you can sell them on, but in my experience, you can't sell baby clothes for more than a few quid! A £28 John Lewis dress used will not sell for more than £3 on Vinted 😭 so, if its good quality, sustainable baby clothes getting sent to me from these rental shops and I wasn't hoping to have another baby, then I would definitely be keen! I still may try them out for a month anyway! Great video Hannah! I really enjoyed watching! I love that you love all the COLOURRRR! What we did as the first ones in our family and friend group to have a baby was to put away our grown out of clothes into a box in vacuume packs of sizes and then we'll offer them to friends to 'rent' (free) and give back to us once they're done, then the cycle starts over with the next baby in the family. Cool thing is that people add clothes to the mix and take out items that become special to them. It's been really cool.

I find the idea of buying second hand and passing down to the new parents in your community so much better than paying around £30 a month for rented baby clothes 😮 cheaper and better for the people around you i’d say!

That feels like a lot of money on a monthly basis, plus you have to keep track of clothes that belong to someone else, and return or exchange things promptly, etc. I have a friend who rented a gorgeous cocktail dress for a mutual friend's wedding weekend, but renting wardrobes for kids or adults isn't a common practice in my area of the USA. I'm always skeptical of subscription services, and how much effort and money they take to maintain. Edit: I would 100% support a communal library economy for sharing baby clothes and other items, though! 👍

My mum does this thing for furniture/adult clothes which I call renting from the op shop. She likes change and rearranges her house a lot, so she buys from the op shop and then when she wants change she buys the new items and donates the old ones back. She gets to own them for as long as she needs but returns them for someone else to use once she has finished with them.

This is a great idea. As a kid my mom always got hand me downs and we passed on my stuff. I remember I was around H4 so and my German friends were coming for visit. The daughter was my age and the sun was a year younger than me. He had an accident and my mom loaned her friend a pair of my bib overalls. He looked so cute in them that my mom told her friend to keep them. When I went to visit them in Germany a year later the friend put him in my bib overalls in front of me. I was a little sad because I always thought those were mine!

I am going to mention what I know is going on at my church. We have a small group of young parents at my church who have kids of various ages. They created a hand-me-down shared community. When a child outgrows an outfit and the origin family does not want to keep it, the outfit joins the community for x size. Over time they became bags by sizes and now people who join the church with kids can get access to these shared clothes. The requirements seem to just be willing to share the clothes with the group when finished. The families sometimes point out that their child once wore x outfit for a time. This is an option my group created for themselves. When I was growing up I remember a church that you could donate clothes to and they would resell them cheaply. If you donate you could get first selection and then the community could. As an adult, we have shops where people could sell used clothes for cash and if you trade in you could get more value to get something or have on credit value with the store, but that's the experience here in Memphis, Tennessee USA.

I think sizing is the really tricky bit - its probably easier to judge if the brands are ones you're familiar with and then you know they'll work for you. Is there baby events rental though, because I'm so reluctant to buy "nice" outfits for a single day when she will have grown out of it by the next party
@stacey738
@stacey738 Год назад
I think owning it is "better" because you could sell it later if you wanted to. So it has inherent value if you wanted to, say get 50% of your money back. Also if you pay 1 or 2 pounds per month and he wears it for 6 months before it wears out, thats 6 -12 pounds for a item of clothing, vs something you could buy second hand say for 10 pounds and then sell for 5 and get your money back. I make a lot of my daughter's clothes and i pay roughly 40 pounds a year for the fabric for her clothes. (20 per season). But i also buy some stuff. I live in a rural community and all her clothes get donated to people who cant afford clothes for their children. I dont feel bad at all.

I got usually got baby clothes from charity shops and hand me downs from friends with older children. This was ages ago (my youngest is in his 30s). I don't think renting was a thing back then. I also dyed cotton clothes with machine dye. I found knitted baby tights (which I bought new) were great as socks get kicked off and lost. I was told my kids were stylish which was great!

My observations as someone without kids: I do think renting kids close makes some sense, especially some of the more special/fancy outfits but probably not so much the everyday hanging out at home basics. I can see it working well for people who travel and maybe don't have that clothes swap network. I got the impression from the one with the more 'library' style system that yes you could send back some of the items but keep others for longer. I don't think you picked up on it as much because you had just used the other sites so you had their systems in mind and the user expectations were this site would be the same. It's something all businesses like this need to remember, if your service is different really smack the user in the face with it. But especially anything that's clearly going to be used by new parents. Sleep dep is real and focus is low. All the sites need to make sure you can at least choose sizes by clothing types. Ie pants, tops, bodysuits. Just like adults they often size out of one type before the other. I think that's where the smaller more personal services have a massive advantage, sounds like you could email/include things like they have long legs etc I worry about auto renewal and growth spurts

I have been waiting excitedly for this video as baby rentals have really intrigued me from a storage aspect and an environmental aspect. I don't know anyone who has children, so hand me downs are unlikely for me, and with a small family, I probably won't be getting that many clothes as gifts. I will definitely be buying second hand, but my worry with that is how long it takes to do that, going through all the charity shops and all the online shops/Facebook marketplace. What did you think of the time aspect, particularly with the bundle options? I'm still slightly torn and I love this video because it was really helpful. I particularly loved the Belles and Babes one. Lots to think about, thanks Hannah!

In my experience, plenty of people resell bundles of baby clothes - it's usually much cheaper and easier than picking every individual items. Could be a good option for you if you don't mind the fashion too much. For me, this was the most practical solution. And you could add a few cute highlights as you like, to liven things up.

I think the thing about renting is that we, as a society, are used to or taught to buy something we want to own. It's like they teach us to only spend money on things that we are going to keep, not just have for a while and then return them, at least in western countries I think (???).
@sonyamohe

I definitely see your money dilemma, since when you buy a piece of clothing you can try to get all the value out of that item that u spent on it and donating it to other family members and have the benefit of curating only the clothing pieces that you need and can control the amount you spend. renting baby clothes at a monthly cost feels like pissing away money in a sense since you still pay the same amount (or more) but you're very limited in the amount of value u can get out of the individual clothes. it's definitely better than buying a ton of brand new clothes but I really only see the environmental benefit rather than the cost benefit.

Baby and child sizes are all over that place! Which makes me so skeptical about renting online; my 1 year old will not be the same size as someone else’s 1 year old. Maybe more specific ways of identifying the clothing size?? (Height/weight of the child)

I Usually spend around the same amount per item when buying second hand anyways, and honestly, renting feels like too much effort mentally. I do not want to be thinking about deadlines when I need to send stuff back, or if they are in a good condition (cause blowouts happen; some baby food leaves insane stains, etc.), and then the logistics of returning the items (I've never Even sent back online purchases, and I don't really shop online if I can help it, in the first place). Essentially, it's way too much work for smth that I don't get to keep. And with baby clothes, there's always a second life - either with your next baby, or passing them on to your friends or family member, or simply donating.

Personally I don't think renting baby clothes would work for me. I'd be too worried about staining them. Buy 2nd hand!!! So much cheaper and better and feels so much better when you find "gems" Also any clothes that can't be shoved in the washing machine on a standard wash don't work for me - cannot be arsed with the faff.

To me it would make sense if the price was per bundle. If each set lasts 3m then that’s 90 for 15-18 items closer to 5 each which is the same price as new.

Everyday baby clothes make more sense to own, in my opinion. You can keep for future children, or sell and make some money back, or give a hand me down to a friend or family member (saving them money) or donate to a person in the community who may be in need. Renting is good for occasional clothes like weddings.

My daughter is 8m and I have a 2yo son. We got lots of boy handmedowns so I've never really bought him clothes since he was born. Because my wardrobe is mainly handmedowns and not picked by me, its bery stereotypically boy. So I've been using Vinted to buy some more gender neutral clothes for baby girl. For her 6-9m I bought bundles from 3 sellers on Vinted. Inc delivery I spent about £20 for 18 items of clothing inc a coat and pramsuit!!! Clean, good condition, some barely worn. Its true there is a sense of ownership and keeping. Why would I spend £35 per month, so over £100 for one age group to send back, when I could spend a quarter of that, choose and keep. Then with those clothes you've bought you can then resell to get money for the next age. I like the idea, but it all seems to be much more expensive than just buying 2nd hand.

When babies get older, you only really need new clothes every 6 months, so spending £35 a months would be a lot. Sadly charity shops nearby don't have many good options, but I do enjoy going on vinted and buying good brands there. Other than that, I love the option to rent and would potentially consider it for our last child. That said, I loved the style of the clothes of that belles and babes company so I'm actually tempted 😅
