I dive deep into one of Singapore's most unique cuisines, Mee Goreng. There are many variations to this cuisine and I try Chinese, Malay, and Indian versions, highlighting the differences and discovering why this same cuisine is presented differently across different cultures.

I’m a Malay in my 50s. Our generation been eating rice with mee goreng since our kampong days. It’s a simple dish but tasty. FYI, many in Indonesia also eat fried noodles with rice.

Indian style with bee Hoon is the best for me! Especially with the cucumbers and tomato sauce on top woooo. Indian style is clearly more different, while the chinese and malay style are very similar. The minor difference between chinese and malay style is mainly attributed to the use of pork lard and halal ingredients, etc. Personally, i prefer chinese style which uses pork lard which adds flavor but there are many indian and malay mee goreng which tastes very nice even without the pork lard.

Wow all amazing, so its sort of the same as a chowmein? The ingredients apart from the sambal is from my learning. Have you had the Indian chilli chicken hakka noodles? I was told they came from Kolkata when the Chinese immigrants came. Also, which has surprised my Chinese takeaway and market friends is that the same or similar is also very popular in Nepal. But there you would get Buffalo chowmin as well done more like a usual Chinese chowmein. The sauce for these Indian and Nepali noodle dishes is based around, some green chillis, tomato ketchup or a sauce, soy sauce or dark soy, salt, chilli powder and sometimes sugar. See, like i keep saying Asia is amazing and such a mix. The food that comes out of there should bring the world together in unity.

I'm not sure the malay style would actually taste the same as how malay aunties cook at home but you can easily find malay mee goreng pre packed at most malay stalls even at neighbourhood area around bukit gombak. Anyways, every mee goreng taste different and even the Indian ones you need to find a famous stall because some stall sell their mee goreng mamak not nice. I prefer the mee goreng mamak at beach road, haig road and boon lay shopping centre. Other places I try not so nice. Also, the restaurant Victory sell very nice fish briyani and crispy mutton murtabak. I always buy there. My favourite Indian food is actually at Banana Leaf Apollo. Their fish head curry, fish cutlet, mutton curry all so yummy!
