I Tried Spray Painting My Living Room 

First of all good job bro! The finger print in the briks is a counter. Every one fingerprint is means 12th brick, every two fingerprint means 100th brick, every three fingerprint means 1000th brick and the four fingreprint means end of shift. This type counting was tipical at the end of 19th century.

Wow… I can’t believe it’s been over a year since you started working on this new apartment. Looking great! My parallel project to hang a picture on my wall is reaching it’s final stages. It’s now leaning against the wall in the rough area it will hang….. we’ve both worked so hard this year. 🙏

Dude.. you are doing an awesome job on the whole place!! As someone who has been doing construction for 40+ yrs here in the states, I can say, you should be really proud!

You need a 3M M3000 to significantly speed up masking, the one with a support on both ends of the roll of plastic. edit: also, for round holes, grab a bag of party balloons, faster and easier, not to mention more effective than masking. Just blow it up and squish it into the hole.

The over spray is always much more than I anticipate! You cannot over prep!

Tip: start with the ceiling, then spray from the top of the walls to the bottom. This way you’re constantly overlapping your overspray and making it more even looking. Use gravity to your advantage!

Very cool video as always, one question: why not white ceiling which would make the room appear higher?

Awesome job, in case you where wondering, the little squirt of paint that comes out when you release the trigger is due to your tip extension, the air is shut of inside the gun, but there is still pressure inside the extension which is releasing but is decreasing rapidly thus creating a squirt of paint. I use a graco and they have a shut off vale for that, the valve only opens above a set pressure so it never releases paint below the set pressure. Sometimes i use the Graco pressure roller, i think Wagner has something that looks the same, its a roller you attach to your sprayer. And yes masking is always a choir, altough you get faster with it, but i like spraying and hate rolling. I always spray ceilings first, the overspray that lands on the walls creates otherwise a bit of texture on your finished walls. I you chose different colors for walls and ceilings you do walls first, masking walls is easier than ceilings. In small rooms i do cover the ceilings, the masking foil sticks to the ceilings a few small tabs of tape and you're golden.

Where I live in Canada, backrolling is very common. I know in some parts of the States, they use different kinds of textures to cover the wall, which I'm not really a fan of. Also to achieve that perfect spray look, over here you have to do what they call a level 5 wall, where they cover the entire drywall with a skim coat of mud. That way you can get a very even surface that absorbs the paint the exact same.

First of all... Nice job Alexandre! I'm not a professional but done a similar old house renovations couple of times. First I do all the drywall seams, screw holes and sand them down. After that I use this rollable drywall mud and cover the entire wall. Next I smooth it out with wide trowel, angle is almost parallel to the wall. It dosen't have to be perfect, just so that mud is some what even thickness and there's no roll marks. When it's dried down, I sand it with 225mm low rev surface sander. Corners and small bits by hand. Takes a little bit more time and efort but the surface finish is graet for a DIY job.

Having a lot of painting experience i find the sprayer is obviously amazing in so many ways but I usually have trouble justifying it for the extra amount of prep it takes. Additionally, I kind of hate using them inside as I feel a normal particulate mask isn't doesn't quite cut it... notice the paint around your nose. If I were to use one inside in the future I would want one of those fancy over head filtered masks.

Spray painting is good if you have to do big projects. Preparation is key as you noticed that and cleaning the machine takes most of your time as the painting generally goes very fast. As for the finished product I have done both only spray painting no rolling and spray painting and rolling before or after the spray painting and I do like the only sprayed version more especially for ceilings. The only downside as you mentioned is if you have to do retouching but rolling the whole retouched wall fixes that issue (the same problem would occur if you would use a different type of roller than the first time just on the patched bit you would also see that). Some tips for future sprayers make sure the area is clean no dust, open a window right after spraying if not to windy good to have a bit of airflow(reduces the chances of paint running of the wall), pull masking tape right after painting the last layer when paint is still wet tape pulls way more easy from the surface also lower chances of tape residue sticking to paint if the quality of the tape was not great, keep an extra of the same roller for future retouching. @achappel you did an amazing job with the painting and explanation as always and good luck with the rest of your renovations; Greetings from Belgium

Thank you for showing us your work. I'm somewhat a retired painter. I've learned many tricks to the trade. Car's, houses, the list goes on. I'm not here to tell all, but I do like to share somethings i've learned during my long journey of painting. Few things I'd like to share. Interior hardboard wall panel, make shields. Train the board to stay straight by flexing it carefully back to straight. There is more art to it than what it may seem at first and ways to use it on various things. Try using a G-10 hand gun. Use flat tips, use a needle or razor carefully on how u might can do a quick unclog if it happens, strain paint well first. The G-10 is great for point blank range and easier to hold than other guns. Remove the duck beak and trigger guard. 3/4 roller nap is great for painting full size rooms using latex. Pastel, light base walls, leaving a good dose at the end of run to help continue on without leaving stop and start places. There is an art to all this that branches out that will serve you well. Think out of the box. lol Have a Nice UFO/UAP Day. Yes, nonhuman flying saucers are real.

One thing in life we all appreciate is holidays, well, except when they show up when we're painting! The best reason for back rolling all spray jobs on drywall and imperfect surfaces. The apartment is coming along great, you'll be super comfortable when occupied and not stepping around tools and supplies. Cheers

Final surface finish is why we skim coat plasterboard before painting, in the UK. A good plasterer can produce a perfectly flat surface with zero blemish.

Alexander, I certainly like your enthusiasm. While I am no professional or specially trained painter, I did notice how you made full passes across the surface of walls when practical. Many years ago, an old timer taught me how to use pressure pot style and airless painting systems. He reinforced the importance of keeping the spray gun at a consistent angle and distance from the work surface. And to as practically possible, reduce the amount of starts and stops in the middle of the surface being painted. From my perspective, you accomplished those fundamental things. In US, West Coast, Washington State, I worked with a painting company that only back rolled interior walls if there was no primer completed prior to top coat. Some contractors were cheap and cut corners. (New construction) When I quit and started my own business, I cut and rolled EVERYTHING, except new construction.(primer required) Since the majority of houses have textured applied before painting, the primer coat sealed the texture and helped prevent shadows. Here in Texas, I back rolled everything. It always gave a better finish. Unless specified by customer on exterior, all bare wood was also brushed and/or rolled. Very few houses I've painted with smooth walls. All of which, whether sprayed or not, got at least 2 coats and a final roll coat. The nap of roller also varied depending on customer preference. You did a nice job regardless, but you learned from it and shared with others. Thank s for your videos.

This video is the epitome of why I hired painters for my home renovation. There is just some things we refuse to do. Painting is one of those things for me. 😂 You have great perseverance!

It is very typical in the USA that the walls are textured using a very thinned out drywall mud as the last step of the drywalling process. The texture can vary from very fine to coarse "droplet texture" using a sprayer contraption to a thicker troweled on stucco type texture. The texturing prior to painting has all the benefits you mentioned from backrolling on the painting step only since there is more texture it is even easier to blend/hide defects and repairs.

Cool renovation and thx to tell what didn`t went so well - best way to learn ;-) Eager to see the endresult. Seeing your belt bags on the last cene - I use those from Tough Build. Easy to mount and unmount and have a free stand + afordeble.

Here in the U.S. we spray and backroll. For flat walls, you need to use the shortest nap to keep the introduced roller texture to a minimum. Some people use foam rollers to back roll sprayed surfaces.

Love the color that you picked, and the finish came out really nice. I've found sprayers are good when you have a lot of corners to get around. (spraying around ceiling rafters and conduit is much easier than brush or roller) But I have to admit, I like the surface finish from a roller better.

I watched The Restoration Couple about two months ago with a couple of videos about spray painting their drywall. Very similar situation but better results and much less overspray from having picked the right setup for their paint sprayer.

Spray painting is the bees knees, we painted the guesthouse at our cabin this summer, took probably a day to mask out everything that wasn't gonna be painted, and then 40minutes to paint the whole thing.

If you get a thick 'high build primer' you can hide the minor imperfections like sanding marks, then sand it primer down and then spray finish the walls. You might need a bigger sprayer though, but you can roll it, just takes longer!

Straight out of high school, I went to work for my cousin who owned a painting business and we would spray and back roll the primer coat and then just spray the two finish coats.

Prep time for spraying is *ridiculous* as you have to cover *EVERYTHING* to protect from overspray!!! Best results I've achieved have been from simple masking around doors, windows, etc. Then cutting in with an angled 2" brush around masked items and finally rolling the rest with a semi-textured roller cover..."floats" out all the slight surface imperfections!!! Just a note: I always work "Top Down" meaning that I paint the ceiling first and then the walls!!!...just in case any ceiling paint droplets fly off the roller, they'll land on an unpainted wall that will get painted subsequently. Shur-Line makes a great covered/shielded roller holder so that when you have your heavy knap roller fully loaded with paint for painting your textured ceiling, you won't get "fling off" of paint droplets!!!

Spray only is my favorite. I paint a lot of houses (interior and exterior), cabinets, trim, etc. I prefer it for finish, and speed, and most my clients say the same "I can't believe how smooth the [walls, trim, cabinets] are!". I've found the wow factor coupled with a very high quality paint like urethane or/and a urethane clear top coat that cures for the requisite time before being subjected to bumps and whatnot FAR outweighs the difficulty in matching the finish with touchups as with a urethane it's way more durable than most paints. When it does get a nick you can use an air brush to match pretty dang close with not much effort.

your attention to detail is amazing. a truly social media worthy build. I am currently building a 2 bed detached house with garage just me and my father and I couldn't get the finish nowhere near that good. It's all about the prep work and the plaster skims. Unfortunately its not as good as your flat but its to a higher standard than new builds in the UK so I am pretty stoked.

Also the best part about back rolling is that If you need to touch up later after moving furniture and stuff in and scuff the wall (it happens). Now when you use the roller, it will match. Just make sure to stir the paint very well so it matches. You guys did a beautiful job. Proud of you both, not a lot of people would ever attempt this, let alone do such a great job . Hats off to you both. Well done and now you can stand back and be proud of your achievements.

Great Job, another option to sanding and fixing small imperfections is just applying filt(Flat wallpaper) before paint. but can be hard as well if not trained.

Top quality workmanship as always 🙂 As an avid DIY'er, rather than any kind of "Pro", I could never be bothered with the amount of time it takes to mask everywhere, setup the sprayer, clean down after, vent the air of the overspray "Dust" and clean said "Dust" up from the floor etc after. I personally quite like the finish left by a traditional roller - and IMO it's faster to cut-in with a brush, then paint with a roller, than it is to mask-spray-tidy-up. It all looks great. One thought on the texture is to back roll the base coat and the spray. Or what some builders do is spray a stucco texture. This really hides the imperfections.

1 day late, but if you want a finish with a roller that is at least close to the sprayed finish, use a foam roller instead of a brush roller. Foam rollers are typically used for roll on lacquer, which requires a smooth finish. Great video as always and I'm looking forward to see what kind of flooring you'll choose and of course the finished room too

I'm a professional painter and decorator from the UK and over here we would fill out the walls and then miss coat with a roller to get rid of any imperfections in the walls and then spray finishes them

dude you are a pro. this kind of work demands higher than normal pricing, you are in demand. know that and charge accordingly.

One thing, the mud and similar materials that stick in the boots, can be easily removed with the help of an air compressor. Maybe is a little messy, but you get rid of it in a minute and you don't have to be spreading crumbs every time you walk around. Regards from Spain.

Sometimes a brush works better than masking fine details. You brush first. Let that dry and then can mask directly on your painted surface than having to mask careful details. (if and only if brushing is faster). Have you used paper to mask with? I find it is easier as it has dimensionality to it and its compostable than plastic is.

Thank you for this video as I was about to buy a sprayer. I can see using a spray for outdoors paining but I agree that rolling it on inside is the best AND no extensive masking needed!

One of the apartments I lived in was a former show-room for an interior work company. In one of the rooms they had slightly textured, lacquered and polished walls. It looked amazing, but was extremely expensive because of high labor cost (that's what I was told). I was forbidden to drill holes/nail into it ;) So I can understand that you like the clean look more. But from a practical perspective, you did the right thing to roll over it. Not sure about Norway, but here in Germany we often just use wallpaper to hide the mess on the wall. That's also a reason those walls stood out.

As a former professional painter, primarily residential, but I did also did commercial work for a while. We always back-rolled. Personally, I like nicely sprayed enameled trim and rolled walls, as long as the nap on your roller isn't too long. For flat walls I prefer using a 3/8" (9.5 mm) roller. It leaves a fairly low stipple, but still enough to help give the wall a nice even appearance while allowing any touch up done later still being fairly easy to blend. Also sanding between coats helps the end result, so I was glad to see you do that. :) Overall, nicely done! (And As someone pointed out earlier, you can't over prep for spraying. :) )

A good friend of mine is running a painters company here in Norway. He shy away from using spraygun, as it takes to much time to prep everything for spraying, compared to a steady hand and a "svabe" (guess wiper is the proper English word for it?) instead of masking. A second drawback on the spray approach, according to him.... The airpump might start to leak, and on two occasions the high pressure house blew a fitting and dumped large amount of paint.

"... which the neighbors weren't exactly super happy about..." Yep, when you are in the middle of your project, the time flies by so fast. Been there, done that. Anyway, reminds me an old joke of a guy telling his friend: "Man, you're not gonna believe this! My neighbor rang my doorbell at 3 AM last night! Can you imagine it? At 3 AM! It startlet me so much that I almost dropped my hammer drill!"

you can move a lot faster than that with the airless sprayers. You probably have some really thick coatings.

Really enjoying the series and the place is looking great. I have basically the same sprayer and I only use the extension when I really have to. I started out using it and then decided to try without it and found it much easier.

You can also use sheet rock mud and use a spray "hopper" before you paint. You spray the walls with little dots, big and small, let it set up half way and knock it down with large sheet rock knife. It's called.... you guessed it, "knock down texture" lol. Also a great finish and keeps you from doing all that hard work in sanding. You guys did great, congrats.

We called it the "million dollar finish" when you would do drywall with no texture. It takes alot of patience and practice to get zero blemishes.

In Germany we mostly only roll and just roll, at least we did this during my internship. Never seen a spray finish in anyone's home too.

texture on walls is the only way to go. If you need to patch later, there are a dozen ways to match it - and they even make texture-in-a-can that can give you a flawless match. also, flat white ceiling and semigloss colored walls with 4" crown moulding painted brilliant white.

If you are doing much more spraying I would highly suggest a full face respirator and maybe have a fan in a window pushing air outside.

That exposed brick looks good. I've been in too many houses (rentals) with painted brickwork, and I think it always looks tacky.

Great work, thanks for a really entertaining and educational series. I used the Fermacell drywall, which requires a thin coat of a finish mud over the entire surface. The end result was amazing with spray finish, but it was pretty time consuming😅

Out of interest, what light panel are you using when painting... it looks like a photography light panel ? When I search amazon here I cant find anything similar and it looks really good!

Very interesting video, here in the area of Mexico where I live, paint Spraying with an airless equipment is so rare that I don't know anyone who does it. I want to start doing it, so I'll check whether back-rolling makes a big difference

There's one thing that is mentioned all the time when it comes to spray painting: don't do it like shooting top to bottom from the hip but move the nozzle at a 90° angle up and down the wall. Nevertheless, nice job.

You could just spray with a motorized unit instead of a large pressure based sprayer. The one you used is a large one for construction projects so it makes sense that it's more complicated to use and pretty nobody owns at their home.

So, a question. In Denmark we put glasfilt on the walls after they have been plastered in order to hide imperfections and achieve smooth finish when painting, however this comes with its own set of issues, like crappy seems and not enough glue on the wall which causes uneven finish. Is this a practice in Norway as well, or is it more common to see the current approach - plastered seems and then paint?

Interesting technique of back-rolling after spraying! Would you say that spending the time to mask everything off and then spraying was easier and more efficient than just rolling and brushing?

I got my hands on one of these Wagner machines and I really would like to spray then roll it, to hide sime inperfections, sanding marks etc. My question would be that how to do this back rolling? Fill the roller with paint with every roll, or just prime it and glide over the sprayed paint? Thank you a lot! Your job turned out fantastic imo, I'd be really happy with that finish. 🤗

45 mins compared to at least a whole day to cut in and roll. Spraying is the way to go. Well done bud

For masking doors and windows, run your plastic and tape it tight at the top and tack both sides and then come back and run your tape so your not wasting tape and time.

I use it to but with shorter adaptor. It's easier to paint. Good job btw

In Serbia nd Austria wie back roll after spraying. It's mutsch faster and better than only to roll the paint. Ther is nazel for mud also , so you can apply mud wery fast.

I've never personally liked when the walls and ceiling are the same color, but I do love the color anyway! Great job, and I love having been able to watch your progress from the start! 🙂

Good job showing all the imperfections. It is NOT easy to get a perfect finish if you are not a professional. People should know this because on video it always looks perfect.

Spraying and then back rolling, just 4" foam roll the corners and roll the rest much faster and less paint floating about in the air... and much much less masking if at all. Spraying is good but only if no cutting in is needed ie; a new build with single colour or for sealer primers

Interesting to see the culture differences between there and the US. In the US, it would be a faux pas to paint the ceiling the same color as the walls. Ceilings almost always get flat white.

Lighting is very important, when you put on the color, it looked like 'smoke yellow'... You know, the color a white ceiling gets when there are chainsmokers in the house. Later lighting made it look MUCH better!
