The BenQ ScreenBar Halo and ScreenBar Plus are awesome for your setup, but they can be pretty expensive, so is it worth just to get a cheap one instead?

I actually thought about getting a monitor light like this but didn't think it was worth it considering my keyboard is backlit and my monitor can easily illuminate my desk too. Thanks for showing these light bars and going into the details (didn't know there was such a thing as flickering on LEDs). Great video, Alex!

I bought a cheap light bar of amazon a few months ago and feel it has made a massive difference if I’m on the pc for a few hours. Whilst it’s not as good as the Benq (a great brand who’s monitors I tend to buy) it was about a fifth of the price and based on your comparisons not a bad compromise. Thanks for mentioning about the led flicker as although I don’t get it on my light bar, I had noticed this on my Razor keyboard and thought I was going mad as it’s only ever out of the corner of my eye that I’d notice. Another great review and really enjoying your channel since discovering it a couple of months ago.

I have one of the inexpensive ones (bought mine at Costco - not sure the brand). Not a lot of control, but works fine. One thing I ended up using them for is for video calls for remote meetings. I tilt it a bit towards my face and it makes a difference, specially since I have a window behind me so I would previously show up as a silhouette.

Really informative review, thank you. I was pondering switching from desk lamp to a monitor lamp and now, when I saw these BenQ ones in action I do want it even more. Although, I'm using a MacBook Pro right in front of the monitor and I'm afraid that the laptops screen with glare coating might reflect the light too much. :/

Great review Alex, and much appreciated as many reviews don’t cover the finer aspects of the quality of the light and the holding mechanism. Only thing I’d ask if you have time is to share your thoughts on using a web camera with these light bars. My issue is that if it’s a pain to do so, perhaps the light bar I need is the type that clamps onto your desk and hangs well above the monitor vs laying along the top of the monitor. 🤷🏽
@JB-fh1bb
@JB-fh1bb Год назад
@3:20 No. LEDs do not have to flicker. There are three reasons they typically do, and all of them are because it’s cheaper to make them that way: 1. Using AC power directly. Since AC goes through a cycle 50 or 60 times per second, cheap LEDs will flicker 50 or 60 times per second*. 2. If an LED is off half the time it uses half the power*. Whether that’s to meet standards, put some marketing on the box, or to save battery power: Flickering can save energy 3. For dimming. The cheapest way to dim is through Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM). Better lights will use PWM frequencies of 5000 times per second or even 25000+ if you’re lucky, but it’s still the cheaper way. It takes more parts and more circuitry to do variable voltage or variable amperage but both of those have Zero flicker. *There are some edge cases (as there always are) where that’s not strictly true

I bought the Ben-Q ScreenBar Plus and I hate that I paid so much for it, but actually do use it every day. The Halo feature to bounce the light off the wall is a good addition, but the price to upgrade is steep; I'm currently using a desk lamp to bounce light off the wall. I have the light bar plugged into a USB-C outlet on the desk lamp, which works pretty well, since I can turn on the light bar even with the monitor or computer powered off. It helps when switching from work to home setup, or when changing the setup for any other reason. Nice review, by the way!

@edoardomacri3049
@edoardomacri3049 Год назад
Hello Alex, the flickering you are talking about happens on light bulbs because they are made cheaply, as they lack of a current transformer, the one that converts mains (source of alternating current) to a stable direct current used by LEDs. They are simply electric diodes that when current flows with positive voltage they lit up, while in the other way they simply block the flow and don’t lit, usually it is done with main frequency 50/60Hz. The lights in the studio and the ones you’re showcasing uses DC current either from a proper (beefy) transformer or via pc’s psu.

@SergiuszRoszczyk
@SergiuszRoszczyk Год назад
Speaking of LEDs, as long as they are DC powered (5, 12, 24V) they should not flicker, no reason for that. Flickering may occur when adjusting brightness, which is more often done by PWM rather than adjusting current (monitors with flicker free badge uses this method). 230V ones often flicker because of tiny power supply which is unable to keep voltage stable and you get 50/60Hz multiplied by 2 in most cases.
