The period videos are back! I tried "The Diva Cup", a reusable menstrual cup, for my period this month, and it was an ~exciting time~. Would you try a menstrual cup?
I got my menstrual cup from Target, but you can find them in many places!

I don't know why I'm telling you this, but when I was 14 and still kinda new to tampons, I forgot to loosen the tampon string before I put it in, so I shoved it as far as I could up there, with string and all, before realizing what I'd done. I ran up to my mom half-crying, thinking I'd have to go to the hospital to have it surgically removed or something, or else I might get Toxic Shock Syndrome. She had to guide me through digging far enough up there to get a hold of it and pull it out. It was maybe the most horrifying and humiliating experience I've ever had. And that, my friends, is why I'm a pad girl.

@@najodo5209 Oh, 100%. This was in no way a complaint about her current content bc I really enjoy everything she posts. She puts so much thought and effort into all her video concepts and execution, which was something I always liked about these videos. She has this way of presenting information regarding menstruation that feels relaxed, something that is in contrast to the way most people normally talk about it (as a joke or in hushed tones) and really helped normalize open and frank discussions about periods (for me, anyway). It would be super cool if she ever decides to return to the period theme, but it's also fantastic that her channel has been able to evolve and expand over the years. This has been my long winded way of saying same, I guess, lol!

actual diva cup user rewatching- don't just yank it out by the stem! you need to press it in a little to break the suction- makes it much easier to pull out without the damn thing trying to french your cervix (and schlurping itself back in if you loose the grip). the little stem guy doesn't really serve a purpose, it's just a comfort thing to be able to feel it. personally i trimmed my stem down a lot bc it gets pokey lol

wow okay didn’t expect this to be so long: came back to this video after buying a diva cup for the first time. i’ve always been an avid tampon user, i can’t stand pads - they just seem so gross to me, so naturally i was pretty excited about this. one thing that really made me happy was the fact it can be left in for up to twelve hours. i was always so bad at taking tampons out on time (never left them in for more than eight hours though, don’t worry haha). the first time i tried the diva cup was a DISASTER. i didn’t know how to insert it properly, and after 40 minutes, when it eventually got in, i didnt push it far enough and when i walked i could feel it rotate. i was in so much pain and was ready to never touch a diva cup again. taking it out was arguably worse than putting it in. i was in so. much. pain. i eventually got it out after far, far too long, emptied & rinsed it, then turned to youtube for a better method. i came across one method that said to fold one side into the cup so it makes some sort of triangular shape, then insert - and that has been the best method ever!!! so easy! then, run your finger around the outside to make sure it’s all open and suctioned. to take it out, as funny as it sounds, you should start by pushing with your muscles like you’re gonna poop. you’ll start to feel the cup make its way out. once it’s out enough that you can feel all of the ring-things on the base of the cup, hold it in place as best you can while you run a finger up to break the seal. once you’ve broken the seal, keep your finger there, continue to push it out while guiding it with your finger. that has been the most painless and clean method for me, i hope it helps. sorry to be so... in depth ahah.

I'm 73 and when I was young, a cup amazingly similar to the diva cup was sold. My flow was insane--changing pads every 2 hours and flow for 10 days. It did have a correlation to a physical problem but I didn't find that out for a year after the "Tass-Away" went out of business. I loved it! For the first time I could leave it in for as much as 6 hours without leakage on my heaviest days. Mine created a seal that prevented any leakage. I never had a problem with it. I can't figure out why it went away for 50 years. I'm glad to see it back.

As as former tampon girl, I couldn’t be prouder of Saf for trying the Diva Cup. I will say that anyone making the switch should consider that it usually takes ~3 cycles to fully master it. It all depends on how comfy you are with your body/your menstrual blood and the amount of patience you have with yourself. But once you get it, it’s everything. I’m now a diva cup + period panties girl and I’d never go back.

Hi!! So some tips from a cup veteran: 1. Do NOT pull the cup out by the stem. The stem is there so you can gently rock it back and fourth to get it to a point where you can pinch the sides to break the seal. You have to keep it pinched the entire time you pull it out. 2. If the diva cup is a little too out of reach, there are hundreds of other brands you can try! Every vagina is different so your first cup probably won’t be your glass slipper. 3. When you boil, place it inside of a whisk so it doesn’t rest on the bottom of the pot, it’ll keep it from burning 🔥 4. You can wipe the cup with toilet paper in public stalls and put it back in as long as your hands are clean and you wash it as soon as you can 🚰 & last but not least, the first fold the box was showing you is the punch down fold, when done correctly it’s 100x easier to put in rather than the c-fold. Happy cupping!!! 💓

I actually do some kind of "7" fold with my cup. This one with the punch down fold are my favourites. If anyone is curious to know more about menstrual cups, check out the youtube channel Precious Stars Pads. The girl reviews so many different types of menstrual cups, it's really cool and she's the one who actually convinced me to get one. Been using the cup for about 4 years now and I love it! I just got my first menstrual cup called a Saalt cup today, and so far, I'm impressed. Cramps hurt less, it sits comfortably, and holds well with my heavy flow. I do agree that taking a cup out is a bit of a situation. I had to squish mine on the side with my finger and drag it out, so it spilled everywhere. Lol. Overall though, I'm never going back to tampons unless I have to. It's so nice to feel more relaxed and not worry about just having the tampon string stain your panties or feel like you have to change it every time you pee. *Edit: Now that it's been all day, and I've done a little extra research, I've found that if you push like you're trying to poop, it helps to get the bottom farther towards your vaginal opening and makes it soooooooo much easier to get out. You may have to do that a few times as you wiggle the cup down if you have a high cervix, or bendy vag like me. Just remember, try to relax and just be calm so your muscles don't squeeze in and fight you.

Best product I've tried, including a few cups, Thinx, tampons, etc. I would also say that you don't need to WASH wash it between emptying it out during your flow, just once a day or so. my thing is that im not really ashamed about the period itself, but theres a lot of blood involved and i think i would feel a bit weird walking to a public sink with blood on my hands. theres also the danger, at least for me, of leaking into my panties during the time that I walk from the toilet to the sink and back. Would still love to try one of these cups one day.

i've heard of people carrying a waterbottle in their bag and using that to rinse it in the stall. or dumping it and wiping off the blood and then go rinse it at the sink. i think leaking won't be much of a problem if its only like 3 minutes w/o the cup

It takes time to truly master the art of using menstrual cups. I LOVE my menstrual cup and would never go back to using tampons. Here are some tips and tricks: - there are so many different brands of varying price points, sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. Don’t get bummed if the first one you get isn’t right for you. Put a cup in it has a very good comparison chart comparing all of the cups they’ve tried. - there so so many more golds that depicted here. I had a Diva cup for a year until I was able to actually use it and it wasn’t until I discovered the 7 fold that I was able use it - if you would for some reason need to change it in public, bring a water bottle with you to rinse it off in the stall - be careful using the toilet while wearing the cup, it shouldn’t come out but you would rather be safe than sorry - don’t be turned off by the price, menstrual cups can last over 5 years so imagine never walking into a store every again needing to buy over priced tampons. This is a one time purchase that will save you so much in the future. - it easiest for me to insert it in the shower. Squatting or putting a foot up on something is the easiest - run your finger around the cup after insertion to really be sure the cup has completely unfolded itself - for removing the cup, its best to pinch the base of the cup, not the stem. It’s also helpful to push and bear down so cup comes out more naturally Hopefully this was helpful to anyone who read this entire comment. I love never worrying about leaks, being able to sleep with no underwear, only having to change it 2 times a day, saving immense amounts of money, helping out the environment, it’s vegan and cruelty free, comfortable and healthier for you! Please try these out!

Excellent points! The 7 fold is life! There's a ton of good info on the web about folds and brands. I loved that I didn't have to pay the pink tax anymore for tampons which hurt me and never stayed put. I always had a hate/hate relationship with tampons. Menstrual cups were farrrrrr better for me.

How do you clean it at work/school etc? I get very paranoid about my hands being not 100% clean and I get scared I will drop the cup because it has happened in my own bathroom when I wanted to empty it and I REALLY wouldn’t want to cause that scene at work 😭 also I just start leaking after 2 hours so idk if there is a cup big enough to catch my flow and that would fit in & not be uncomfortable 😬

Wooo I am day 2 into my first period with a cup. Something I never thought I would do! But tampons gave me thrush, pads made me feel squishy and dirty,& the bin full of pads at the end of the week made me think about the environment! Day one was great but day 2 can't seem to get it to seal today so I'm practicing and sticking with it. I'm amazed at my body and how it just scoots on up there lol!! And also surprised how much I bled I never thought it was that much! Sorry TMI lol. I'd tell evryone to please try it!! So far it's made me feel so much cleaner and fresher down there even with a little leak compared to a whopping great pad!

A couple of tips from someone who liked using the diva cup before testosterone halted my cycle: -after it unfurls after inserting, pull down on it slightly until you feel a little resistance. It’ll suck back up and you’ll know you’ve got a good seal. -when removing, it helps a lot to either twist it a little or just barely pinch the base of the actual cup portion to break the seal. This makes removing it much easier! -depending on your anatomy, you may when to trim the stem portion a little. With where the cup naturally say for me (generally me still cups sit much lower in the vagina than tampons do), the long stem felt a bit awkward. -lastly, as with most if not all period products, there is a bit of a learning curve. It can be reassuring to use panty-liners, particularly on those early heavy flow days, while you’re getting used to using it and figuring out exactly how long you can go before it needs emptying.

honestly relatable. all these comments are saying if it hurts then you're doing it wrong, but for me that wasn't the case. tampons hurt a lot and i can't wear them. one time i tried to put one in after multiple tries, finally got it in correctly, stood up and immediately cried my eyes out and fell down because of the sharp pain. some of us literally can't insert them. i have to use pads. all the same people praising tampons say that pads are like diapers, but in reality if you have the correct pad for your body shape/flow it shouldn't be visible and you shouldn't be able to feel it.

TAMPONS MAKE ME CRAMP LIKE A CRAMPING CRAMPER WHO CRAMPS!!! I can insert them without pain (though I can always feel them in there), but the freaking CRAMPS. The only going explanation I've ever found is some reproductive systems are laid out in a way that if you use a tampon it will sit against the cervix and cause pain. Other people's vaginal canals are slightly different lengths and shapes, so that's why it hurts in some and not in others.

Hopefully you read this! The bubble feeling is because there are two air holes in the top of the cup! That's designed to let air out of the cup as it fills, because the blood slowly going in the cup is obviously going to push air out the way! So the holes let out the spare air😂which is what calls a "bubbling" sensation!
@SamanthDarling
@SamanthDarling 7 лет назад
Omg this makes me feel better!! The bubbling and air feeling are the only part of the cup that I really have an issue with. I'm scared of getting an embolism (you know that thing where air gets trapped in you and you die)!! So it has a way to leave so that won't happen!
@joannaOttawa
@joannaOttawa 7 лет назад
Samantha Darling embolism is an air bubble in your bloodstream... There's no way it can get in there unless you get an injection with significant air in there... Definitely not from your period... Air gets in there all the time with insertion...

there is zero way you can get an air embolism from a diva cup or form a tampon for that matter. Air gets in your vagina all the time from all manner of activities (sex and masturbation included). Its when air is in a vein that it is deadly.

I'd just like to add some tips/info here: 1. If it pops up/fully expands after you insert it, you probably have good suction. Trust me, it's a good thing if you don't have to fiddle with it a lot! It's always good to rotate it to get it extra secure though. 2. I like to cut the stem on mine, sometimes it can stick out a little too much and often when you "feel" the diva cup, you're actually just feeling the stem. Others express discomfort in this area and it's worth trying. 3. You don't have to walk to the sink to rinse it out every time. This would be super awkward/impractical to do in a public restroom, and if you're having a heavy day no one wants to do that lol. Just remove it as usual, pour the blood into the toilet, wipe the cup with toilet paper, and reinsert. It's no different than a tampon, and is actually (in my experience) a lot less messy than a tampon. I guess there's a little bit of a learning curve for everyone, but after you get used to it (which imo happens really fast!) it doesn't take more than a couple seconds to insert/remove. I'd also like to add that I experience significantly less cramping with a cup! They're really so great, they're a lot more comfortable and clean than tampons/pads.

@x if you have a heavy flow you'll just need to empty the cup more often. It might not fit for the night... but at least you'd cut your tampon usage during the day! There's also different sizes, however it is recommended to start with a small or medium size to get used to it... Maybe start with a medium size that you start using around the end of your period to see if you're comfortable with it (not everybody is). The cup pays for itself really quick, so even if you end up buying another, bigger one later, you should be good money-wise. Plus a smaller could be more comfortable on days with smaller flow. I'd also recommend wearing pads or period panties, especially at first, and especially with heavy flow!
@Loveit4everandever
@Loveit4everandever 5 лет назад
@xFrom what I've read the sizes have nothing to do with flow, but with your muscles. they recommend a S for younger girls (virgins), a M for most people and a L for after giving birth. I also think there are different strenghts to it (maybe in just a few brands) being the stronger ones for more active people (such as athletes). We all think we have heavy flows, but using the cup made me realize that for most of us it actually isn't so, it's just pads and tampons aren't effective.

Watching this video again after using it for the last few years and knowing exactly how the cup should feel and what “bubbles” mean before the 12 hour mark (ie: it wasn’t fully unfolded upon insertion and or, the cup is full), is interesting. I’m very late to commenting but thought this could be useful. TIPS FOR USING A CUP: I wanna start by saying I was only ever using a pad before I tried the MoonCup (my preferred cup). Tampons terrified me because of Toxic Shock so this was my first time using an internal period product. When I first used it I was a virgin which may sound like an odd fact but I literally knew nothing about my vagina and how to insert the cup. So first thing I’d say is make sure you know at least the basics about your vagina and periods. When first inserting use some water and continue with water if needed - helps any pain you may have if you have a small cervix and also helps seal the cup in place. I would recommend the MoonCup as a great starter cup as you can cut the stem to whatever length works for you and it’s never once leaked for me. Definitely do what Safiya forgot (rotating and checking it’s suctioned) If you can feel it whilst walking, sitting or standing then you’ve put it in wrong - it’s a learning process. BUT the feeling of calm that you get when you literally forget you’re on your period because the product is so good is worth everything!! I no longer get my period due to my birth control but I used the cup for a solid two years and (as someone with a heavy flow) it was a genuine lifesaver. I wouldn’t leave the house when on my period since it was that heavy and the cup gave me the freedom to even just go outside that I didn’t have before.

I been using the Diva one year and I absolutely love it bye bye pads and I hate tampons. I use stage 2 because I have had 2 kids stage one is for woman that do not have kids yet. Stage 2 cup is slightly bigger cup. I just wanted to let everyone I'm a scuba diver and this by far the best method for my period. Bleeding outta my Scuba Wetsuite with a tampon on is GROSS and embarrassing and its wet and uncomfortable. Here's a tip for cleaning your cup in public to be discreet wash your hands 1st and bring a water bottle with you after you discard your flow wash the cup the best you can with the water bottle and clean your lower area with the water bottle and hands then insert. If you can bring Vagisil or a mild soap in your backpack to clean the diva cup do it or just use water till you can get to a place you feel comfortable cleaning the diva cup for example home. I find my flow is super heavy so day 1 to 3 I'm taking the cup out every 2 to 5 hours to insure no overflow but after day 3 it's back to 12 hours. This is a funny story I'll share I thought I lost my diva cup couldn't get it out was scared and I panicked I thought I had to go to the hospital but after googling it and watching a youtube video I was told you can't loose your cup. So I took a deep breath and calmed down and tried again and slowly remove my cup. So thankful you cant loose it. I love my cup and keeps your ph levels great and no odors from your flow so happy it's much cleaner and no leaks ever for me. Hope this helps everyone! +Emily Matthews I'd choose not to go swimming. I've had mine for over a year and i hate the sound of tampons

I saw a video showing how to wash it in a public stall, the girl brought a water bottle and rinsed it out with that in the stall, reinserted it, then said to clean it more thoroughly when you get home! I thought it was a pretty solid way to clean it inconspicuously.

I loved these videos! They're so informative especially for young girls who may have just gotten their period. It normalizes a very normal thing and I just love Safiya for that ♥️🩸

Ellie Best it's worth discovering what your body is like downstairs, especially if you start a sexual relationship with someone. there's nothing wrong with knowing your body even if you don't want to use tampons

Rewatching this years later, wearing my own menstrual cup which I finally felt brave enough to try after watching this (also some of Hannah Witton's vids) when it came out 😂 These were such good vids, thanks Safiya!

Love that you are talking about the different period products available, giving them a try and providing an honest review. I want to add, from experience and farther research after failing with the product, that the diva cup and similar products often don’t work well for women with endometriosis. My friend with PCOS said the same about that condition. Thank you Safiya!
