power dmg ranger weapon is just a niche that is super full Greatsword (Moblity + Block) Axes (Range + cleave) Sword (Mobility) Longbow (Range) Maces (CC + Sustain) For any weapon to get a place there is hard spear is the same just with mobility + stealth + some range so a semi mix out of GS and LB - which for non group PvE is good, but not for Endgame PvE

So in a way the spear is kind of a success then... It's not meant to be a high end raid weapon, but more of a jack of all trades and it succeeds in that greatly. I am looking forward to using it in open world pve 😊

Big issue 1, is sword/axe have traits for those specific weapons, and spear's Beastmastery trait was preemptively nerfed. Big issue 2, after years of supporting multi-strike, CC, boons/control condi, and non-stealth gameplay, dropping a single-strike, no-CC, no boons, no condi, stealth-dependent weapon in our lap wasn't going to fly, not without reworking a ton of traits, adding substantially more source of stealth, and giving Druid pDPS traits or spear conditional cDPS or cDPS traits. GW2 is about having to specialize for purpose, and currently, there's no meaningful way to specialize for spear use.

Ill be real, most of the spears who were decent were worse version of weapons each kit already has. They played a lil dif, but the end goal was often just okay, this is a less version of what we already have.

@@zumasa9991 GW2 uses specializations and traits to amplify certain playstyles, weapons, and skills. Ranger uses CC, or disables, for both strike-based damage, which relies on critical hits, and conditions, or damage-over-time. Some moves hit really hard once, but some skills and traits activate every time you hit, or every time you crit, so you hit as fast as you can, even if it's not very hard. Many weapons, skills, and traits also offer boons, or buffs, to increase your damage or defense, sometimes at the cost of damage. Spear hits very slowly, and so can't rely on per-hit playstyles, doesn't hit very hard so it can't rely on big critical damage, doesn't inflict conditions, or grant buffs, or disable foes easily. It's a very peculiar weapon that doesn't seem good at anything Ranger is typically good at already (or anything it isn't typically good at yet, for that matter). If you're playing for fun though, and like spear, feel free to use it! The game is meant to be enjoyed, I just personally enjoy when the right shaped pegs fit in the right-shaped holes.

Especially true for Druid. Druid flat out can't use the new spear without either dealing no damage with it, or dealing far less damage in CA with less output in general. Soulbeast doesn't have this issue, as a SB can run both condi or power and do just fine. Untamed runs power - which is superior to condi - so they get to use spears too. There's basically no benefit for running Condi over Power at all, because in PvE, power doesn't need a moment to scale up, even if it does similar damage to condi. In PvP, there's so many counters to condi that certain builds outright demolish it. Stack in the fact that a ton of Core Ranger traits are ancient and haven't been changed in years, not to mention extremely weak, and Ranger is in a terrible spot right now in general. When other Professions pick their traits, it's huge and massively changes how they play. Ranger is lucky to have a 33% chance to inflict a weak bleed on crit for ONE major trait. ONE. If they want bleeding to do more damage, they have to take ANOTHER major trait. Also, Marksmanship is quite possibly the worst tree in the game, and the issues just continue to pile up. I get more damage out of running Nature Magic than I do Marksmanship. Simply because with Nature Magic, I can take Double Slam and bop a ton of Fire damage from a single Sun Spirit cast - more damage than Flame Trap does, actually.

I wish that the second skill would become ranged while stealthed. As you said; numbers can easily be changed but what threw me off the most is how little you can do at range - basically only AA and the pool noodle. That's it.

My favorite part is how they didn't even slightly consider that MAYBE in PvE the Ranger might have some abilities like traps or other things that pulse damage and completely break your stealth. Also, nothing feels better in a rotation than having to wait like a second to make sure you're stealthed so you don't waste it on an AA. Stellar design overall, 10/10, Ele's in shambles as always.

I don't think ranger spear will be a raid weapon anytime soon, but I can totally see it being useful for new players who want an open world build. Before mounts came out, I would have loved some more stealth while doing map completion.

Trouble is you’ll need to complete an endgame mastery before you get access to Ranger spear, so not terribly useful for new players.

I like how spear here is designed for melee play, but still lets you apply ranged pressure. This direction of not letting players feel useless when forced at a range is good.

If its good for sPvP/WvW, I guess that's fine. When you think about it, there's not a lot of niches left for ranger weapons to cover outside of maybe a pure high powered ranged weapon, which is nice since most Ranger weapons are solid alternatives when they're not BiS

what was annoying in wvw was the forced reveal when you use the empowered skill. I stealth and press 4 to leap away, but you reveal as soon as you press it

tried the engi spear briefly i got basically identical numbers when i ran it on condi mech not bad, felt a bit slow but usable

they need to specify in the skilltip that it has a different attack profile based on ranged or melee distance.

Hope to see the spear beta for every class because for me the necro spear felt weird and I cant really tell why. Maybe it was just weird using a beta Charakter that I never played with

Enabling any Spec to use any weapon leads to weapons sinking into oblivion as the main deciding factor will be numbers. This is either more or less DPS than Axe, one of them won't be used.

People will choose whichever is most enjoyable to play so long as the DPS numbers aren't too radically different. For instance, I don't run grenade kit on my engi because it's a boring, finnicky piece of crap and I'll take my -2,000 DPS if it means I don't have to use it. Another example: Muk playing 'just greatsword' Vindicator and using staff as a CC option because the sword/sword stuff leads to such a small DPS gain for the extra effort.

@@CuriousMoth Doesn't really change what I said. You may find the 1st best option annoying, but then you're gonna take the 2nd best option - not the 3rd or 4th best option - all decided by numbers. Muk (and any other Vindicator) is playing GS - not Hammer or any other of the 8 or so available weapons.

Appreciate the Ranger spear review . Did you try in WvWvW or PvP ? Ranger needs to be able to throw traps & stealth again. Best WvWvW content for me . Spear was fun for me to play in all modes. Pokey numbers need a fixing up . Thanks for this

I probably would have changed the mace/mace instead of the sword/axe on your dps test. Axe offhand is usually the weapon you wanna keep as axe 5 is probably your best dps skill.

i tested it thoroughly myself and i could never get spear to beat any other of the strong weapon combos either, they just need to buff its damage, I practiced for a while and the best i could get was with hammer/spear and was still 1k less than my goto hammer/mace/mace combo

I am amazed that no one is talking about this spear being basically the Ranger greatsword in melee. It is insanely similar. And at ranged it is a lesser weapon. Why is it so similar. Couldn't Anet figure out something a bit different in that regard. And as spear has ranged attacks too, the weapon can not be as effective in damage as greatsword. Otherwise it would make greatsword mostly useless to even use. Spears ranged skills are underwhelming too as you are a lesser version in ranged when compared to melee. Autoattack is less dmg and is just plain damage. Skill 2 you can not use as it is only melee range. 4 is movement and 5 is the stealth / web control. Only the skill 3 feels ok as it is the same as in melee. Now can the weapon feel fun. Sure. But what is the point of the weapon. We have better melee and ranged focused weapons. Yes this combines both worlds and has it uses in pvp but seriously. We could have gotten a bit more with this weapon in terms of play style difference. For example the weapon being ranged with all skills and 2 melee skills only with stealth mode. It could have made this weapon more like what they were trying to describe it to be in the initial blog post. Pressure and main mode in ranged, and finish off the enemy with a surprise attack. The spear could have been a mid range mobility and pressure weapon. Now though it is just meh.

GS is better for the block and great CC. In PvE I would rather have something useful than a pathetic 4k ranged dps “option”.

for me all those weapons feel a bit stiff in the animation department. Like those spears do not have flow while youre attacking. Character in most situations is very stationary.

I really think this should have been a condi/hybrid weapon, we have so many power weapons atm. Ive been liking power quick untamed lately, and i dont think this will be taking the place of greatsword or hammer. Plus we have no two handed condi weapons, besides sb.

idk, I don't really see what it's offering in the open world either. The only advantage it seems to have is limited ranged capability, but if you want to hit stuff at range, axes or even longbow can do that much better, and mainhand axe in particular has an incredible unleashed ambush for open world PvE (the spear one is bottom tier)

I feel like anet it's using spear to give the classes the "weapon set" that they are missing. For me ranger spear feels like a kinda zerg weapon. Same with the other spears

Why can't they make the 3 on spear into a push (non-stealth) and pull (stealth). It will synergise with spear 4 (non-stealth) and be a unique, actually useful weapon skill.

Anet also needs to really careful with spear 2. Ranger hasn't used gs in pve for literal years now. It is pure garbage in comparison to other weapons. Not only that, but if spear is trying to be like gs then what the friggin heck is the point of gs on ranger? Answer: a block. That's it. Why on earth would anyone ever take gs ever again apart from wanting a block? Is gs reduced to Gorse sb hand kite?

I tested just a bit on power dragonhunter. Well don't see any point in using a spear so far. Damage was very weak. They need to do a lot on the spears imho. I would have prefered one handed land spears over all tbh (cause spear and shield always look cool) but ofc we take this too 😂

It was kinda sad to play on the beta. I hope they speed up the stealth 2 and bump numbers a bit so it's worth running on PvE, the motions were very graceful and lovely and it would be sad to have it locked as a comp mode weapon.

It's funny how they "buffed" the numbers on Ranger Longbow for PvE and it's STILL worse than carrying an offhand axe instead. It needs another number buff and it needs more freedom of movement. It's funny that we compare the spear to it though. The spear is still better than longbow for range. Deplorable.

Far too many classes have a spear run animation. Which either runs you out of a hitbox or runs you away if you're healing/booning 😂

Stick better to moving targets specially combined with the cripple (way more relevant in PvP scenarios than PvE of course)

Swiftness is so good in endgame pve that heal scourges will dedicate a relic just so they can provide it to their group. In any situation where you want to get to another location faster, and you don't already have superspeed, swiftness is great. It's even better in pvp.

Swiftness is important for PvE and pretty vital for PvP. Speed gets you around the map quicker, and means you slightly harder to track in a fight, ideally, you want all boons all the time if it is remotely feasible. :P

Ranger spear feels really fun in open world and PvP but probably wouldn't use it in more intense PvE scenarios. Agreed that spear 3 feels incredibly underwhelming.
