As a Sony shooter who has a desire to shoot Leica I really enjoyed hearing your well reasoned and insightful thoughts on using the system. It’s hard to beat Sony and I love the system but the industrial design of the Leicas really calls my name!

Ahh Leica SL3 is great really easy to use nice menus lovely photos and amazingly built camera , I think it will outlast its competition and will certainly age better than most. It does everything its competitors do maybe slower than some maybe not the choice of sports shooter but an excellent choice for many others. The price well thats the buyers choice I’m certain no one will purchase something they don’t think is worth the price. Thanks for review although I use the SL3 I also use a couple of Fuji cameras which are just the best to use.😊

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! How do you find the SL3 since you actually own it?

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Hi for the kind of photography I shoot travel and landscape I really like it . There were a couple of teething problems with it these have been ironed out . Apart from the exceptional build of it and good quality photos ease of use menus and the very good app for transfer both raw and jpeg , I don’t need a whole lot more. If you need a faster lighter camera then this is probably not a great choice Nikon/ Sony might be better and better priced. Being able to use third party L mount lenses makes a big difference if you find Leica lenses too expensive. Although it is a very expensive Camera they do tend to fetch really good money when selling them on, particularly if you keep them for a longer period of time, so in the long run there is still value when buying Leica.

Luca Petralia provides an excellent and thorough discussion of the Leica SL3 and some possible alternatives, Sony or Canon (or Nikon by inference) for cost and flexibility, or on the other hand, Fuji medium format for image quality. Yet while he mentions having "loved" the of shooting the Leica, he omits that factor from his decision making. For a professional photographer making a purely business decision, that omission may well make sense. For anyone else, however, the ---the absolute pleasure of using an instrument that is supremely well designed and finely crafted out of premium quality materials---may be the overriding consideration, and in that case, the Leica (if you can afford it, or if you buy one second-hand) may become the obvious and only answer. So here's hoping that whatever camera you buy, you really enjoy using it because, in that case, you will have made the right decision. 🙂

Thank you for replying. I definitely analyze in a cynical way, but to be honest... If you fall in love with something and you decide you want it, you'll end up getting it anyways, so for those who fall in love with something reviews are merely a matter of self convincing it was the right idea. I'm implying that is you, I'm only saying that in my position I have to try to be as objective as possible.

Hello Luca, let me start by saying that I did watch the 38 minutes and 8 seconds video😂. Your presentation and analysis of the camera after using it for less than two hours and comparison to other brands is excellent. This is definitely not for me, besides the astronomical price (for me), this will not get me better images of the iguanas, squirrels and alligators that what I get with my X-T4 and the XF16-80, the XF70-300 and/or all the Fuji primes that I have (keeping in mind that I’m speaking as an amateur/hobbyist). On a separate note, I preordered the XF16-50, none of my other lenses are going anywhere, I just wanted a new toy, I believe that my attraction to this new lens is the fact that it has an internal zooming mechanism. Be well and stay safe.

You must be crazy to watch the entire thing. I couldn't stand myself either!

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Crazy? what does my mental state have to do with anything? You sound like my mother-in-law🤣. The video is very interesting because your logic and common sense actually applies to any brand when people make comparisons between them.

Just wait for the Panasonic S1R II. It will have the same Leica sensor, better video capability, better in-body stabilization, at no more than USD 4k.

I feel there’s an element to this being forgotten. Let’s use watches. Why do people buy Rolexes? They can easy buy an Apple Watch Ultra w/ way more features. Most buy it because of the craftsmanship and heritage behind it as well as how the watch makes them feel. I own both Sony and Leica. Sony definitely has the technological advantage. Leica has more of the inspirational advantage and craftsmanship that makes me want to pick up the camera. All cameras nowadays have the same features but having a camera that actually inspires you and makes you want to take photos makes a very big difference.

Definitely part of the equation, it's undeniable. However I would argue that cameras age way worse than watches, and therefore the investment isn't as wise. On top of that cameras are used (or should be used?) to take pictures, not to collect art pieces. So while I get your point, as tools to get to a specific result, the craftsmanship or luxury I think technology has to matter. With watches they all tell you the time, they don't change the final result... They are less tools, more accessories, therefore the luxury/craftsmanship argument makes a lot more sense

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Depends on the user. I think technology matters to an extent. Most Leica users probably don’t pay too much attention to specs. Yes they would like certain features and upgrades but they don’t expect the same from like a Sony/Canon/ Nikon user. Again it’s not for everyone for those who it is for they know what they are getting. Also the value of the Leica hold a lot longer than most, if anything most people keep their Leica’s for a life time.

la macchina è fantastica ma aspetterò di vedere la stessa macchina con il marchio Panasonic ad 1/3 del prezzo di Leica anzi non capisco perché non c'è ancora una nuova s1r Mark II

His discussion of comparative image quality lacks credibility because there were no comparative examples. He implied greater quality but didn't demonstrate it. A hurdle for me is not only the high cost but also that many "normal" SL3 lenses weight 700 or more grams, while competitive lenses are much lighter.
@LucaPetraliaPhotography

Comparative examples would imply shooting the same scene with both cameras, otherwise comparing different images wouldn't be a credible test either. I don't have the luxury to own any of these two cameras, hence the impossibility to compare them directly. As for the lenses you're right, Leica lenses are usually heavier than other full frame counterparts
