Ok saw a couple of your comments saying that the pH might be higher to lift the cuticle for penetration of their bond repair ingredient / proper clarifying. Super interesting point I hadn’t considered! This is where I wish I had a chemistry degree so bad 😂 🧪🧬
Maybe low pH shampoo is important, but it's not the only important thing. Many stronger cleansing agents that can dissolve fats and oils are basic, not acidic, so it might make sense for a clarifying shampoo to have a basic pH.
I feel like this makes more sense for something like k18 mask where it needs to penetrate past the cuticle and know it’s actually a benefit to how the product works but idk about a shampoo…. I rather just not do further damage and stick to a ph balanced shampoo 🤷🏻♀️
An example of a clarifying shampoo having a high pH to be a more effective is the Malibu C Un-do Goo shampoo which has a pH of 9. It’s supposed to be really effective and I’m sure it would work well followed with an apple cider vinegar product to balance pH after use. I’d love to see you review more Malibu C products, especially their Hard Water line
Curly chemistry on RU-vid is a good channel to watch. She has natural 4C hair but she does inform about hair in general. I believe she is a cosmetic chemist. I love following her. Very knowledgeable.
Oh man I don’t need to be tempted right now. I’m on a no buy. These gas and food prices are cutting into my joy. 😂 I will keep this in mind because I looove K18.
I reached out to Olaplex customer service and was informed the pH for the clarifying shampoo is 5.8 - 6.8. High yes, but most (yes I know K18's detox shampoo is impressively low) clarifying shampoos have a high pH.
I’m obsessed with this shampoo! I have very long & super blonde highlighted hair and this (along w all of their other products) keeps my hair so healthy and pretty 😇
Thanks for reviewing this! I just purchased both K18 shampoo’s, one of which is a detox shampoo. I would love to see you try the detox one out or both of you can. 💗💞
Yes, I used it while I was bleached blonde and my hair loved the original. But now I’m just letting my own brown hair grow out and the original shampoo is just grease central on my roots. I just tried the clarifying one and it’s really good ! Much much more volume. Just goes to show you have to find the right product for your hair at the moment i guess
I almost bought this like a week ago and I’m so glad I waited for this video to come out. I knew you would review this product!! Thanks as always Abbey!!
I really like how the original olaplex shampoo made (most of) my hair feel, and how little I needed, but my hair got incredibly oily SO quickly after. I wonder if this one would be different?
I tried this shampoo and conditioner because I wanted to see what else was out there. I normally used Joico. Let me start by saying I have naturally curly hair and I need more moisture. This shampoo and conditioner did absolutely nothing for my hair, nothing good. After using it, my hair felt less soft than usual. It looked more frizzy than normal and I was disappointed. When I woke up the next day, my hair was dirty feeling. It felt heavy and gross. What put me off about these products were the smell. The smell was so strong that it bothered my allergies. I would go to the restroom and the entire restroom would fill up with that scent. It was that strong. To say the least, this is not my first time with hair care products that do not work for me. I guess I will just stick to my old standby. Thanks for the review though. It was nice hearing someone explain things the way you did. Have a great day! :)
Honestly same, for the price it didn’t do anything for my hair at all, it just made my hair more drier and frizzier, i have wavy hair and it just made my hair look so frizzy and drier than it was before…also heard a lot of people started balding specifically from this brand.
Abbey!!! You have been reading my mind these past few videos because everything time I buy a new item, I open RU-vid and you make a video on it the next day 😆 I bought this the other week and have been waiting to try it! I am also a 1 time. Week washer, BUT my scalp never really gets oily, so I am not in need of a serious deep cleanse that you may need… I’m hoping that this new shampoo is the right fit for me- not too severe, but gets the job done! Plus, I love that it is vegan. Other clarifying shampoos like OUAI, sadly are not. Thank you for all that you do! LOVE YOU 💗
I was comparing clarifying shampoos for the important purpose of clarifying before using K18. I settled on Malibu C PH9 . It has the least ingredients that would otherwise bind and fill in space that I want K18 to get into, ,such as keratins, proteins, silicones, polyquats etc. Also the raise cuticle from Ph 9 seems important to me for that so the K18 will penetrate better. I'm not afraid of the high Ph as the after products such as conditioners etc are designed to lower it, I can even help this along by adding my own mix of vinegar. I also am wary of so many products now using "Acrylates Copolymer" , these are micro plastics that pollute the body, food supply and environment and imho should e banned as much as possible. The Olaplex 4c has no EDTA and has conditioners and looks more like a daily/cowash shampoo than a clarifying one. In fact, maybe that is what they need as the Olaplex bonding agent might actually be clarified OUT of the hair.
@@MC-yp5rk When your hair dries the product will no longer do anything. So just wash it out when your hair is just about dry. Leaving it on overnight will do nothing. The deep conditioner is #8. #3 is protein.
I'm still trying to get through my 8oz of the regular Olaplex shampoo and conditioner. I'm not a fan of it, but it was expensive, so I'm going to finish it haha. It doesn't seem to do anything good for my hair. I'm always looking for a good clarifying shampoo though. I'm using a mini of Ouai's clarifying and love it.
Thank you, Abbey, for this thorough review. I think I will stick with the GK Hair PH Shampoo for my detoxifying needs. My hairstylist uses this and it really makes a difference in deep cleaning my hair.
actually "neutral" for pH means around 7, and in their case, it s around 6.5 like their other shampoos. maybe they hide it cause people don t like it. I don t know why their pH is so high. Maybe it's the only way to open the cuticle enough for their bond-repair active. (then I saw that u said that they list it now at 5.8-6.8 : maaan that s too much for me 😅)
Abbey!!! Sending 💜 You were very vulnerable in your recent video. I am so happy to see you coming out the other side beautiful! Proud of you on your journey! Which self Tanner have you been using recently? Love your color! I have used Faux Tan only from Bare Minerals for years, and love it, but it has been discontinued 😔 Lmk which one you are using now. You review a lot of them, so it's hard to know. Thanks!! 😘
Thanks for your review helped me decide I won't be needing this product! I use the paul mitchell shampoo three to clarify my hair, it is good for me because i swim often
Abbey, would you add to your list of future videos talking about your new color? I really like this new blonde you’re doing & I know you’ve been transitioning to more of a balayage look that is not as light as previous. Would love details and how it’s working for you, if you’d be willing!
Also product rec for you: I think you’d love the Ion Hard Water Shampoo from Sally’s. It’s $8, a Malibu dupe, & happens to be sulfate free. It’s leaves your hair so clean, but so so mangeable & makes my blonde hair look even blonder. Since you have hard water, I thought I’d pass it along. I’ve used clarifiers but never specially a chelating shampoo & it kinda changed my life. I could not believe how much more manageable and soft my hair was. I was listening to a video with a hair stylist & they are basically clarifying shampoos, but on steroids.
Hi Abbey! Could you review JVN products? They seem to have great ingredients…but want to know your take on them 💕 I don’t trust it until it gets the Abbey dub 😂
Will you be testing the new K18 shampoo and conditioner line? I'm in love with the hair repair treatment but I'd love your feedback before investing in the new line
I had a thought: I wonder, is the reason the pH is higher Bc-to lift the cuticle & actually remove buildup-you have to have something that is a higher pH? That’s how I understood clarifiers and chelaters to work anyway, since that really popular Malibu Undoo Goo shampoo has a pH of 9.
Just conjecture but they probably need the ph to be higher because otherwise it would be harder for the Bis-Aminopropyl stuff to penetrate if the cuticles are smoothed closed. Personally I love the regular shampoo, and I think it works great with k18. I know k18 is coming out with their own shampoo soon but I’m wary of it since I sort of get the impression that k18’s active ingredient is either so expensive to produce or difficult to formulate that their products have to be really basic and rely on the peptide in order to bring something extra. There is nothing wrong with basic formulations, but I’m personally not a fan of the primary cleansing agent that the k18 shampoo uses (Olefin Sulfonate or some such) so the formula being basic makes me think that it won’t be much different from other Olefin shampoos that I haven’t liked.
Sorry to state this but you are washing yiur hair wrong you wont get the beifits of the shampooo! You are supposed to put the shampoo stright onto the scalp then let it lather rather than putting it onto your hands and lathering
what’s crazy to me is that this shampoo actually does have a sun protecting ingredient, hexyl cinnamal which is basically octinoxate (it might also be octocrylene im sorry i dont remember). that’s likely where the broad spectrum claim is coming from
of course not 😅😅 hexyl cinnamal is just a fragrance ingredient that has to be listed cause it s an allergen. And broad spectrum doesn't mean that this shampoo is sunscreen LOL it s a "broad spectrum clarifying shampoo" meaning it clarifies most things
@@shoresofreedom yeah i’ve just been looking into different uv protecting hair ingredients, and ethylhexyl cinnamal is actually a protecting ingredient so i think i mixed it up
Thank you for the educated entertaining video. I'm confused, maybe doing something wrong? I use this shampoo and during / after rinse hair feels like a cross between straw and rubber bands in texture. Conditioner remedies this, but strange result. Any ideas?
Do you have any other recommendations? I used Redken purple shampoo and I’m trying to use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the purple bluish mask on my hair. But now after I have watched your video. I’m not sure it will do the job. Thank you so much please keep me posted if you have any wisdom.
I’m biracial, with coarse hair. I wash my hair once a week. I do a home keratin treatment every 3 months. I don’t think I can use a clarifying shampoo and try to use sulfate free shampoos. I have seen a dramatic difference in my hair health since following the Olaplex system. But I do agree that by day 3-4 I’m ready to wash my hair, but waiting for day 7! Abbey any shampoo recommendations?
I love to create my own beauty products at times. There is a debate about pH in shampoo bars. I guess that would apply to liquid as well. Anyway the saponified oil camp with a high pH of 8 or a little above say it doesn’t damage hair and there is research to back it up. The Syndet camp ( made with the same liquid shampoo chemicals) has a low pH say that that is better. Both have studies and research to back it up. I lean a little towards the chemicals balanced pH more. I’m not sure why I mentioned it. Maybe because there is the research. I can’t link anything because my comment will be deleted Chagrin Valley Soap and Salve has an article with links for example.
Hey abbey i watch your vidéos from Algeria 🇩🇿, i have à question and i hope you answer me 😊, is amodimethicone in my style cream can be removed with one wash with a sulfate shampoo or i need more washes for remove it ?? *Sorry for my english*
Where do you recommend starting as far as figuring out what shampoo/conditioner works for one's hair? I'm frustrated not knowing what products will help my hair!
Can you please Do a video on straighteners I would love to see your favorite hair tools, especially since we have the same hair type, I need to buy a new one and don’t know which one to buy!
Hi there. I'm new and so happy that i found your youtube. I have a question and thought maybe you can help. i have bleached hair and like all bleached hairs it's dry and damaged but i also have dandruff, i have olaplex bond repair shampoo and K18 but whenever i use them, dandruff gets worse, i'm looking for a anti dandruff shampoo which doesn't cause my hair more damage. i'm struggling and don't know what to do with it.
Hi Abbey, I’m new here! Love all your videos. I just got the ouai leave in conditioner!! Was wondering if you had a chance to review it??i love it so much but your opinion matters!
I suffer from dry scalp and have used clarifying shampoo that have not irritated my scalp. This made my scalp flaky and itchy and would not recommend it based on that.
I used Olaplex 3 and it really damaged/dried my hair out despite using a moisture mask after. It's been 3 weeks and I can't get my hair back to normal. Alot of my hair broke off.
This was a super helpful video thank you! My go to shampoo for my extremely oily hair that has to be washed once a day no matter what I use except when I would use the discontinued redken oil detox shampoo in the white bottle with gold label. Did you ever try this shampoo when it was available? Interested to hear what you thought of it 😁
I do not like this shampoo. It does not rinse out well. It makes the back by my neck sticky and my hair looks oily. After one day. I am a blonde with hair down my back. It's too expensive
@@AbbeyYung Thanks Abbey.. I have that as well I just got the Olaplex 4c (I am a licensed professional) at my supplier. Havent tried it yet, I love your opinions as well!
Mi experiencia con el clarificante fue horribleeee y uso todos los productos de olaplex para mi son 50 estrellas ,,,mi cabello no aguanta el clarificante Porq yo no uso cosas raras como espuma o gel osea no lo veo necesario de verdad
Honestly you need to start washing your hair more than once a week because that’s not enough for your hair type and it is horrible for your scalp with all that buildup since you overuse dry shampoo. 2-3x would be better for you.
Hey, Abbey! Thank you so much for this honest review. Everybody looks at olaplex products like a holly grain for hair. So glad you also shadow us pics of the day after washing your hair and how it looked. Have you tried Neutrogena clarifying shampoo? I heard that it works wonders .... Thank you ☺️🤗
How long did you leave the shampoo on for? And how many latherings did you do? Depending on how dirty or the buildup on the hair, try a lite cleansing and then a second cleansing leaving on the hair for 3-5 mins and then rinse very well. Follow with the No.8 mask to address any issues with moisture loss in the hair.😊🌺
@@AbbeyYung Since I have extremely oily fine hair it’s so hard for me to find a shampoo on the market that cleanses my hair properly whilst keeping my lengths hydrated because I have the same exact hair type as you but my hair is low density, so I have to wash my hair every 2 days with firstly a sulfate based shampoo, then a sulfate free shampoo to properly get rid of all the build up. Before I shampoo I use coconut oil on my mid lengths and ends and massage my scalp with a few drops of a mixture of jojoba and rosemary oil as a pre cleanse for my hair. The ouai detox shampoo is a shampoo that Id love to try because it worked well for your hair. I’d like to thank you because without your channel I wouldn’t be able to learn a lot about my hair and the products that can go well with it, I’m truly grateful for your channel because youre respectful, informative and a very sweet girl! Btw have you tried Kerastase’s Bain divalent?
Drugstore products are just not as good as professional products. Save your money and invest in a high end shampoo and conditioner. It will really help your hair 😊
