This is awesome- I really appreciate when a professional uses “cheap” stuff and talk about the problems with the cheap stuff, because newcomers get discouraged if they are struggling with a bad skating shoe and they think “I have to deal with this feet pain for a year??? No-“ and then stop Good skates have good support and comfort-
omg i bought those exact same skates some time ago and the pain and pressure in my feet after a few mins is unbearable - i thought that was my fault not knowing how to skate well enough
I got Sure Grip Boardwalks based on your videos and website -- I ABSOLUTELY love them, and am SO happy to see the other side of this coin. Thank you for this!
We watched your skating career in reverse. What in the broken ankles and blisters did I just watch! 😳 I wouldn't even put my empty candy bar wrappers in those things....
This was so eye opening. I’m grateful that of all my years of skating that I always had a Riedell’s on. When I watch that boot flex when you turn, it makes me nauseous lol. Thank you for the experiment to show people that they truly can suck at skating because of their skates. When you’re talking about performance, and feeling comfortable and safe, a good pair of Rollerskates are worth the investment. I’m glad you were safe lol
Changing the cushions on my skates (Moxi panthers) made a massive difference to learning backwards bubbles, slalom and working my edges in general, and it’s such an easy low cost upgrade. I would recommend it to anyone just starting out. If you buy a brand like Moxi or Chaya, in general I find (as a beginner) they come with decent wheels, bearings and toe stops, there’s no need to upgrade those, but the cushions are hard as rocks and they make such an impact on your skating.
Omg thank you so much for this video 🥹😭😭 I've got a pair of these (lightening bolts design) and I honestly have been wondering why it's sooo hard to skate compared to watching people... I've roller bladed and skate boarded as a kid and I have balance and these boots just made me feel all over the place, when I do have balance it was incredibly difficult to do any techniques like bubbles going forwards because I couldn't turn them in... Eventually I managed to do it but at the expense of feeling like I'm blowing my legs out 🤣🙈 and when I was watching tutorials online I kept thinking to myself why can't I do any of these moves as easily and as flowing as them?... Doing backwards bubbles I'd have to basically do on my tip toes to be able to move my legs in and out freely which as a beginner of roller skates I pat myself on the back for, for not falling over 🤣🙈 but this video makes so much sense.. I was getting extremely disheartened not being able to do what the videos was saying, and kept telling me to shift my weight but it just doesn't work in my skates, and now I know why 😍😍 thank you so much 🙌🏼
I resonate with this so much.. I bought these skates from another brand in Amazon during prime week because it was cheap and I really wanted light up skates. Plus I’m a beginner so I didn’t really think about how there’s a difference between trunks, wheels, etc. I’ve been trying to practice every weekend and I realized it’s definitely the skates and not me because I have great balance and I have the form down, but I am not improving what so ever on these, it feels terrible 😭I feel like I can’t turn or have any smooth movement so I’m so glad I found this video cause I was about to give up😅
This is what hurts me. You have all this enthusiasm and these skates just make you think you can’t when you definitely can, just not in these “skates”!
I had the adjustable ones as a kid. I could only go forward. Using my cousins and friends bauers was a shocking change. I now have my own Edea skates and WHEW
I picked up a pair of these from a thrift shop a couple of months ago. Replaced the wheels and bearings and have been rink skating on them since. I actually find the boot comfortable, but everything else I completely agree with. Heading to the skate shop within the next few days for new boots/plates!
I nearly did this, I'm so glad I watched a few of your videos first. I went on Amazon and the "worst" roller skates caught my eye, they were white, cheap and the light-up wheels drew me in. But I spent a few quid more and bought a real pair [roller derbys]. [I noticed my local Sports Direct store sells only the "worst" skates, they don't sell any decent brands, assume they are marketting them at kids.]
@@gentlefieldtheorynerd853 yeah, don't buy these pieces of shit. She literally made the video to show people, why. She fell on the sword, and threw the $45 at them, just to show us what it means to skate on TRUE pieces of shit, roller skates.
Hello skatie, I had these roller skates a year ago and they lasted a week and then they broke. I don't know what I did wrong. I now have Chaya skates and they are very good. Can you test the Chaya Bliss Vanilla that I have? I and I don't know if they're any good, love your videos❤❤🎉
I bought Tempish Nessie skates there very similar to the candy girls. They have a aluminium plate and are a solid beginner skate. I will say they are a lot heavier then the hockey converters skates. I have adjusted everything on the Nessie skates, the axel nut, wheels, bearings, cushions plus added insoles. The skates are still to heavy for me personally. I recently bought a custom skate with the sunlight plate, I think I will need to change the trucks for something lighter. It really hard trying to find light weight skates. I think Rookie skates are a very good beginner skate and they have a good price too.
I will tell you honestly, as a absolute nonskater non-sporter civilian before, i have been blessed that my begining in all of this was heavily induced by profesionals on ice and seller of more expensive class skates (for ice and rollers), thanks to that i haven't got a chance to even think about what i will buy, they exactly said to me what to have, why, and thats it, no discussion allowed from my side. Because of that i am still skating today and haven't event think about quitting. Absloutely love my skates, everything works as it should, easy to maintain, pleasure to ride. My skills aren't great but fortunately for me i took detour from start that went around most of beginer induced obstacles based on equipment that makes more troubles than profit. If you feel that you will like skating, and you can spend extra bit on skates, do it.
I’m not an ice skater but the boots I’ve always used are from bauer. If u still know any of the guys who helped you out have an old pair of bauer ice skates, remove the blade, slap on trucks and wheels then you have a ridiculously comfy pair of skates.
I would say with skates, even if you have no clue how they work, you can just feel when it’s right. You’re drifting well with your edges, they feel comfy and reliable. Half the battle when learning is confidence, now obviously don’t be overconfident just because you managed to barely do a cross over, but don’t be afraid. You will fall over, but get back up (learn how to get up from the floor because it’s actually kinda techy lol), don’t worry about how you look and keep going.
Just wanted to say I really do love the videos and the hard work you've put into all of them, they are exceptionally good and I refer people to them all the time for learning to skate properly :) Just wanted to add a couple of points to your info for anyone reading this, maybe having gotten a pair of skates like this and feeling disheartened if watching this learning about their new skates - there are a couple of adjustments one can make to make them slightly better: The longer bolt isn't catching the wheels because the wheels are tilting at an angle, one wheel tilting away, the other towards the middle of the plate, clearing the bolt. Of course, the bolt should *always* be cut for several reasons, you and I both know this, but a longer bolt doesn't make a skate unskatable. The worst thing about these cheap skates (all puns intended :) is that the plastic baseplate, combined with the plastic hangers (trucks) is really bad (and the 150kg rating for those skates are a joke - all other skates utilizing those mass manufactured cheap plastic plates have a max rating of 60kgs, preferably nobody above 50kg should use them though. But they *are* "ok" though for smaller kids, just trying this out on the cheap, in theory, but the *main* problem is the soft plastic baseplate and trucks combined with the rock hard plastic cushions, which are not urethane. And as you say: the metal plates on the slightly more expensive skates *can* make them more heavy, especially for smaller children, for which these skate really are made (even though they make these skates in larger sizes and sell them as "adult" skates). Upgrading a skate like this with a proper set of urethane cushions, preferably soft or medium hardness (even used ones are better than the ones that come with), makes it a aaaaalmost acceptable skate for slightly longer term use and enjoyment, and at least ok for just finding out if one likes to skate or not, *if* the budget one has is *really* tight. Also loosening the nuts slightly on the supplied cushions doesn't do much for mobility, but inserting a proper set of soft cushions and then adjusting to taste is the way to go. - so if one has received this as their first skate there is small upgrades one can do, if one doesn't have the budget to go and buy one of those recommended skates you have listed on your website instead :) But of course, buying more expensive skate used instead is always a better option for most :)
Even as you said how these are more ideal for kids, don’t buy these for your kids. I had a similar pair as my first skates and constantly fell over, despite being decent with hire skates at my rink. A lower weight will be “better” with them, but you might as well sellotape wheels to your shoes and have the same experience from how much of a joke these are. I remember mine had plastic wheels too, so I was essentially ice skating rather than roller skating.
@@Ruby_Mullz That is true indeed, and these types of skates really shouldn’t be allowed on the market at all - unfortunately sometimes one can’t control what grandparents and well meaning individuals do, and if one receives a pair of skates like these, rather than just chuck’em in the bin creating more waste there are ways of at least making them less crappy for a little while :) I help run a partially donation funded roller disco with free roller skate rentals for kids, and I’ve seen small kids do amazing things even on skates like these that have been donated with just a few tune ups, but for any sort of progress beyond the very basics a «proper» set is of course always preferable :)
Ein Anfänger weiß nicht, dass er den skate anpassen müsste. Er hat schlichtweg keine Ahnung von der Materie und entdeckt nur, dass er "untalentiert" ist, u/o verletzt sich.
@@sunnyseecamp8640 True - some of these skates do actually come with a small user manual detailing how to adjust skates to turn more or less depending on the users weight, but not all. Which is why it's great that people like @skatie put out videos like this, and that we in the comments can fill out more info for anyone taking the time to read them :)
OMG, these are the skates I've been skating on for about 1.5 years and I've really liked them and haven't had problems, I picked up bubbles on my first try. It makes me wonder how much better I'll be if I buy new ones. I get overwhelmed with the options though every time I look 😣
@skatie I bought some similar black and multi colour line ones no so far back. I really thought it was me not knowing how to skate. It's a shame you don't have any on your website that are a bit more masculine. 😔 Being a huge fan of Starlight Express which we are off to see again in a couple of weeks in London got the bug to try and learn again!
I get that need for more masculine skates. My brother agrees with you. He has the Bauer type plastic shell ones. If you want a heeled skate go for it! Men who skate artistic wear the heeled skates in black. I hope you find some you’re comfortable with. 😎🤩🌟
i feel like with equipment it depends. a beginner won't notice much improvement between ok skates and very good skates and if the equipment is decent, it's likely a skill issue, but they will deeeefinitely notice the difference between terrible and ok skates. so don't blow hundreds of dollars but get something for 100 bucks because those super cheap ones will jsut be discouraging
This just popped up in my recommended and I have to say....YES!!! Skates to avoid: ANYTHING on Amazon (or other sites) that say "Double Row Skates" (even those that do have a "brand name" on them). Anything that says "Chicago" (they used to be great in the 80's and before, now...I wouldn't even give them to my worst enemy.) Impala! (Their skates themselves have improved throughout the years, but after their racist actions, I can no longer support them in good conscious.) Slap a new plate on those and I could probably use them. I always say I can skate damn near anything. (Been skating for 49 years now.) I have several shoe builds I adore that I made myself, and I've also skated bunny slippers. Literally...no stabilizer, no insole, nothing. The bunny slippers were just the plate attached through holes I made with SCISSORS in the bottom of the slippers. LOL But these? Yeah...I'd be terrified, too! A cheap skate ain't good and a good skate ain't cheap! (NOTE: Yes, there is a difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive". Inexpensive - like those Candi Girl's - are good. I love my Candi's...and my Vanilla's...and my Riedell's...and my Moxi Lolly's...and my Sure-Grip's. Not sure if any of those brands are available world-wide, though, other than the Candi Girl's.)
@@Skatie I have just searched for the last half hour to find the video...I SWEAR I uploaded it at some point (under a different account, not this one), but I can't find it. And now, with the Moxi "Beach Bunny" skates, that's all I'm seeing. Going to keep looking. I just don't remember what I "named" the video, so that's only making it harder to find. LOL
And...apparently RU-vid deleted my older channels since I wasn't active enough on them. 😢😭 All I have left is a picture: scontent.ftol2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/93841190_4506591809380799_4862048239160918016_n.jpg?stp=c65.0.206.206a_dst-jpg_p206x206&_nc_cat=110&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=e289f2&_nc_ohc=Ya6C5HK_3MQQ7kNvgEm2zhp&_nc_ht=scontent.ftol2-1.fna&oh=00_AYBB7zBfXPHlyCmcOqTkzTz8NgG6f6PO155E-qkWS08CkA&oe=66E32C2B Hopefully the link will show. I might just have to upload the video to this channel, since it's the only one I have left. Nothing super special, just me skating them in my dining room (VERY limited space), but....yeah....LOL
The sheer amount of people on reddit who say they spontaneously gained the ability to do manuals after they upgraded from Impala skates... It feels like every price benchmark unlocks a new 'layer' of skills.
I have those same skates in black…..they are a size too big lol. But I have been learning a lot about skates these past few months. Ended up upgrading to Moxi rainbow riders instead to continue my skates journey. Man I feel so damn dumb 😢
Honestly. If no-one tells you how are you to know. The Amazon reviews are all from beginner skaters who don’t know themselves. Great upgrade choice. The cushions can be hard on those skates so an upgrade would help. I have a video about adjust trucks etc which will really help ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5A6kYAzK6Oo.htmlsi=x2NtRdpYoZqVp-Rg
@@Skatie I was able to finally access the group on facebook by searching directly from facebook your official page and going down I found the group. I sent the request. I hope you will accept it〓♥️
Same skates I bought yrs ago when I first stated skating lol. The skates made me almost bust my butt and made outdoor skating near impossible. I switched to the Vegan Parkstars and Have improved so much w out drills.... It was just the skates and wheels lol
Being competitive for years I have had lots of skates and I purchased a pair of cheap skates to roll around outside anywhere and I was just like this. They were terrible. I gave them away and use one of my others now, I just change the wheels.
I just love my Roll line Energy and matrix plates, and the energy titanium axle ones. They are 7 mm bearings and just so used to having them now. When young I had Dominion and sure grip that were also great at the time - 8 mm axles. There are a lot of cheaper range that are quite ok, but some are just terrible and really asking for an accident with them. My mum was a skater in the 30’s and I was 3 when one day I put her old skates on and she taught me basics. I am 75 now and still skate and do a bit of coaching. I am Australian and live in Australia. Skating has been a long time passion and I love e these videos on You tube.
Please someone tell me if nitro rollerskates are good !! My dad said he got them for 90$ and I saw someone at my rollerrink with them and they seemed okay. But my laces are super short and barely give ankle support and idkkk!!! I really need help please respond ❤
I made the mistake buying Lenexa Shadow for my 1st skates. Turns out that their size 11 ran small. A stranger at my rink asked me if they hurt my feet (I guess I looked that awkward 😢) We soon concluded that they in fact were too small. They did come with a really good 82a wheel bearing combo though 😊. I then purchased the Suregrip Fame. THATS when I knew I started with the wrong skates. These Fames had me moving into intermediate in just a few weeks. 🏆 🏆 🛼 🇺🇸
