For this edition of Try To Keep Up we challenged a group of accomplished figure skaters to swap their blades for wheels and try some roller skating moves for the first time. Will our newbies be able to keep up on a different set of skates or will the differences leave them sitting on their behinds?

The sad thing about this is the fact that roller skating is still not seen as an olympic sport even though it uses a lot of the same complicated moves as ice skating and takes just as much skill and discipline. This should have changed long ago.

It really is such a shame that artistic roller figure has never gotten the respect that ice figure has always received. Roller figure is actually officially an Olympic recognized sport, but it hasn't been included as part of the Olympic Games. A lot of people may not remember this but Olympic figure skating gold medalist Tara Lipinski got her start as a roller figure skater, and won the US championship for her age group at age 9, in 1991, before going on to Olympic gold in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.

I started skating at age 6, 48 years ago. As a teen in the 80's the skating rink was THE place to be. Skating was just a way of life. I had my Riedell Speed Skates decked out. I was at the rink every Friday and Saturday night. They were some of the best times of my life. The last time I skated was about 9 years ago. This has definitely inspired me to get back in my skates. Ummm...I did try ice skating and ended falling all over the place...it's definitely two different styles of skating. I never got the hang of ice skating and it was cold, wet and the ice actually hurt my hands..I ended up in the gift shop buying gloves..lol....This video is so much fun !!!!

Thank you for telling me the correct name artistic skating for figure skating on roller skates. As someone who was an ice figure skater in my childhood, I was always impressed by the people who did the same thing on roller skates. People claimed that ice skating was more difficult than roller skating. I would like to make an objection. While it’s true it is easier to learn to roller skate when you’re new to skating, once you have learned how to balance on ice skates learning how to do the different moves, spins and jumps is easier as the blades of the ice skates are lighter than the wheels of the roller skates.

I’ve been quad skating about a year and a half and these women did AMAZING, which is to be expected when they’re all incredible on the ice already. The comment she made at 11:45 about not knowing where to place your weight and just needing practice for it to click is exactly right. I’ve been practicing turning over my left shoulder for literally months and the other day it suddenly clicked that I was stepping too wide, ergo my center of gravity wasn’t over my foot, and I couldn’t feel confident in my step because of it. The ice skater who said she felt limited by the quads made me laugh cuz in the wheels community, inlines are the more limiting of the two. She just needs some looser trucks and a soft top boot and she’ll absolutely LOVE the freedom of quads. Quad skating is the perfect marriage of my love of dance and my autonomy in life. I get to inspire people while loving myself unconditionally, and no other sport has made me feel such joy.

@dirt6830 Год назад
@@raph1136 I can deal with scrapes, but Ice is harder than concrete and hurts more and is more dangerous when you fall. I skate on wood and vinyl, anyways, as I do artistic rollerskating so I don’t really get scrapes, just bruises. I don’t really get them much anymore because my skating and techniques are becoming more consistent. I don’t like skating on concrete. You should be wearing protective gear if you’re worried about injuries, anyways.
@raph1136
@raph1136 Год назад

@dirt6830
@dirt6830 Год назад
@@raph1136 I’m not talking about whether it is flexible or not lol. The hardness of ice varies but it can definitely get up there if not more than concrete. Ice hurts more because its hard and cold. The coldness definitely affects how much it hurts as well, I love the cold but I can’t stand that. I’ve torn skin on ice and concrete and I’ve had way worse bruisings when ice skating, with roller skating the injuries aren’t as bad with the exact same kind of falls. Look, I’m not going to diminish your experience, but I’m going based off mine so don’t try to make out my knowledge or experience is wrong, cos it’s not. It’s not a competition. 100% agree with having to unlearn to relearn... I also agree how the one said you feel like your stuck on a board. And I also agree with the balance can be explained, but until I feel it to get it, it'll take a while... I've been back on roller skates for two years now, and I still can't get the spins down... I miss ice skating, but the water doesn't freeze here, and there aren't any ice rinks nearby. The closest thing they have is the crappy fake ice at the mall during the holidays, where they don't allow jumps or spins and charge $20.00. and the area is only 6x5... I'm 6'3"... Like fitting a cat into a hamster cage.

It’s so nice to see how different the mechanics of skating on quads vs blades really is. As a kid I used to figure skate. As an adult I’ve taken up quad skating. Figure skating exists in both ice and roller skating. There is a difference between ice skating and roller skating. In ice skating, balance occurs on one blade and on the edges of the blade. In roller skating balance occurs across four wheels. To spin on roller skates using both legs balancing occurs on the front 2 wheels of one skate and the back 2 wheels of the other skate.

Skater: “this is similar to how I do a flip jump” Video: *shows a waltz jump* Ouch, lol 😂

Yeah, right!? I needed to stop and think a lot to understand what did she mean 😂 The previous one almost did a waltz jump, but in this case she was talking about the turning entrance to the flip, before (and without) the actual jump

I learned how to ice skate as a baby on the frozen lake near my grandparents trailer and my mom got my brother and I roller blades when we were kids. As an adult I bought some roller skates and could just never get the hang of them because I was so used to that sideways mobility. Seeing these guys breakdown the moves really makes me wanna try again using their tips

I love both!!! Thank goodness for the really awesome trainer that was at this ice skating rink. He immediately took me off the rink had them sharpen my skates six times. It took them a while to do so. And then like magic. I was able to skate. That's all I needed. I couldn't believe how important it is to have sharp blades. Roller skating since I've been three. Oh my gosh was I a handful for my family. Always on the move literally. Oh I wore my purple skates everywhere. In the house outside didn't matter. So I had balance. I could spend I can run I can do all kinds of stuff on my skates. Putting on a pair of skates. Blades. I failed hard. That man was my savior. He spent a solid hour with me. All on his own. So grateful for him..

I started Skating at age 3 when my Mom would take me with her To World On Wheels Skate rink in Venice CA. The energy of the Roller rink floor is all about Energy and each skater's individual bounce/style of movements that makes Roller skating so much fun. Yes technique is needed for choreography yet for the most part, Roller skating displays individual styles of natural movements.
