Just how many tomatoes can you grow in a suburban backyard? This summer we challenged ourselves to grow enough tomatoes for the entire year ahead, on my quarter acre urban homestead. It wasn't all Caprese salads and good times as a mysterious gardening challenge almost put our yearly harvest in jeopardy. I share the results of my tomato season, and learnings for fellow gardeners.

I was about to mention calcium for your soil, make calcium powder from egg shells, it doesn't get more natural than that.

Well done guys. Thats an impressive haul. As far as fungal and bacterial diseases like wilt, I've heard its best to rotate your garden beds annually for tomatoes so the soil has time to recuperate. We've been following this advice and so far have managed to avoid it.

Hey thanks! Yes, that is a good tip, and I will be rotating as much as possible next season. My problem is that I use so many of my beds for tomatoes in summer that it can be difficult!

Love this! Thankyou. Can I ask what variety was the most productive out of those ones?

Good question! It’s hard to beat Tommy Toe, I think we got the most kilos from them.
