Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

More ideas: Because the power couplers have no collision, you should have added more on the other side of the rotating part that spun in the opposite direction, creating a longer chain of counter rotating power couplers. Should do a vertical experiment too, so gravity affects them uniformly in the down direction, and not pulling them all to a single side in the down direction. This should decrease slipping of parts with collision. Have the arms that spread them out to be on pistons as well to vary the radius of the cables while they are twisting. Have the counter rotating parts move at diferrent speeds, or have more cables on multiple seperate wheels all spinning at different speeds, in opposite directions, at different radius distances, and longer chains of power couplers. Have two or three separate bunches of power couplers intersecting each other and rotating through each other. ie have twisting cables on the x axis, y axis, and z axis that all twist through each other. Have xyz axis cables connect to other wheels, ie have a cable connect from an x axis wheel to a y axis wheel, so you have power couplers twisting to multple various wheels. Would be interesting to see. Make a chain of these in a large ring shape rotating in different directions. Make a jelly fish flying machine.

A possible use for this would be as a torsional spring - you could twist it to store energy, and then use a detachment block to disconnect one side and have it fling something using the rotation.

They wouldn't have much stored energy unfortunately, since you can't keep on twisting it past 1 turn.

16:36 I just realized something about the consistent pattern with the colored Power Couplers. Algebra time! So each of the colored Power Couplers have a corresponding mathematical function that switch between the two colored parallel lines after every 180° rotation. Red and Blue are Y=0 Orange and Purple are Y=-X Yellow and Pink are 0=X Green and White are Y=X When perfectly aligned, Red is X0 Green is Y=X Domain: [0, ♾) Range: [0, ♾) Blue is X>0 Purple is Y=-X Domain: [0, ♾) Range: (-♾,0] Pink is Y

One important thing, when you said them being floppy was adding some variability I think that wasn't what was happening. Since the oposite ends continued spinning in the different directions the "rope" was getting twisted at each end, like each string of couplers was getting twisted as well as the whole system, so that might be cool to test too

You should try creating a build that can survive terminal velocity that uses power coupling to dampen its fall like those egg drop challenge creations. The goal is to protect the egg (or the seat) from breaking.

I have a suggestion. Take what you have here, build a pole/post in the middle that doesn't spin, and see if the couplings will twist around like a spiral going from one end to the other end of the pole/post. I think it could produce some pleasing esthetic effects.

Make a guitar with power couplers as the strings. You'd probably have to replace one or two of them in each string with tubes or something so you can 'strum' them, but then have each string attached to suspension or a half-compressed piston or something with a distance sensor to play a sound when the string contracts from being strummed.

I'm pretty sure it would be less jittery if you attached the pillars together with a bar on the bottom and used only one (or none) anchor blocks. The anchor blocks cause jitters, presumably because they are an artificial fixed connection to whatever it touches and there's some floating point weirdness going on when this happens.

When you twist off center ropes like that they try to stretch, you need something like a suspension on one of the base pillars to allow the base to contract.

You should make a tower, but there are hinges or suspensions or power couplings between every floor, so it's flexible. Then, make a shaking platform (probably with fast-moving pistons) and put the tower on it, then see how well it can stand the artificial earthquake.

you might be able to twist them if you added another "wheel" thing with spokes keeping the strands apart in the middle, maybe with suspension so they could compress some.

Something I thought of watching your experiments with power couplers but I'm not sure if its worth exploring, is that they remind me of leafspring suspension and might work for offroad vehicles or other vehicles with the adjustable stiffness.

It is clear on the first builds that it is the end connectors that are colliding, so you should try different lengths or singular couplers to avoid these collisions

Scrapman, I know you’ve got to remember this. When we were growing up (me in Vegas, you wherever you were) their was a commercial on TV constantly for girls’ hair accessories that “made hair braiding easy” and supposedly could add beads as well. In my mind’s eye, I’m seeing either you or another viewer making a machine that triple-braids power couplings like tri-braided hair now… like in that dumb TV commercial in the late 90s / early O’s.

I missed the deal 😢 but something I wanted to try but you should totally do is, try and make it longer and spin faster. I don’t know if scrap mechanic has some way for doing gears or maybe something like a transmission so you can change speed and torque. But my theory is that at higher speeds and length would create a harmonic effect and create multiple cross points along the whole structure. Honestly, if you think about a guitar string getting tighter it would affect the wave lengths. Instead of pushing the “rope” 😂 closer, pulling and making tighter. Being able to control both variables would be ideal in fine tuning your results.

it's because you have anchored the pillars make them slide toward each other while keeping a bit of tension that's how rope makers do it. Because you have them anchored and are twisting them you make too much tension in the strands.

Once you have them twisted, change the direction of one side so it stops twisting and just spins. It'd be could if they keep the twist.

I suggest retrying some battle challenges or maybe start with races, that you've already done, but, the caveat is you have to use a vehicle from the workshop, and then if you lose, you get to make changes within a certain block limit, or keeping within a certain core limit for the challenge.

2 thoughts. 1 set servos to different speeds, just beams say .5 and .51, watch the 'random' 2nd though just twist 1 powercoupling, like trying to unwind a spring, see if it fails

UPDATE: Just built my first vehicle (partially). Went for something kinda ambitious, a swept wing plane. So far; the swept wing works well, and looks great. I haven't built the tail yet, but I slapped a few tail wings on just to test it, and it flew beautifully. :)
