If you could start anywhere, anytime, what's the highest number of English counties you can visit by bus in 24 hours? I reckon it's 14. Join Mrs Turtle and I as we head off into the freezing February night on an awful lot of buses to try to prove the theory right.
There's a route map of this and all my other challenges at www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mi...
The Jay Foreman video I mentioned explaining the compelxities of English counties is here • English counties expla... . And if you really want to read the Lieutenancies Act 1997, it's here www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/...
Soundtrack music:
Ludwig van Beethoven - Country Dances for Orchestra - Contratanze 4
George Frideric Handel - Music for the Royal Fireworks - Part 2 (Bourrée)
F. J. Ricketts - Colonel Bogey March
Johann Sebastian Bach - Orchestral Suite No.3 in D Major - Gavotte
Frédéric Chopin - Waltz in G Flat Major
Edward Elgar - Enigma Variations - Variation IX 'Nimrod'

I discovered your channel some two years ago and have been hooked ever since. The slightly ludicrous idea to travel around the UK and the rest of Europe with a stuffed knitted toy turtle named ‘mrs turtle’ as if it is perfectly ordinary to do so, combined with the sort of challenges you subject the both of you to are not just very interesting, they are also insightful, pleasant and - in short - just wonderful. Thank you and mrs. turtle for your travels and your channel - the world is a better place because of it.

How nice to see a 'new release', welcome back! I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. I lost my own dear mum on what will be two years ago next Monday. I know how terribly hard it is. My sincere condolences to you and your family. It's interesting that in a previous video, you touched on the outskirts of my current home town of Reigate. Then, in this one, you visited Colnbrook, which I also called home for about four years! In fact, you went straight past my flat, not once, but twice (although it wasn't actually shown in the video)! The block where I lived was built on the site of where the first Cox's Orange Pippin was grown back in 1825, when Colnbrook was still in Bucks. The history of The Ostrich is certainly an interesting one, although in my opinion, the interior has been somewhat spoilt by the addition of too much glass and chrome. I believe they've now removed the vat of boiling oil alledgedly used in the demise of at least one guest, though. 😄 Thank you again for reminding me what a beautiful island we inhabit.

Thank you for your thoughts - and sorry for your loss. I really rather liked Colnbrook (the only previous time I had been was on a bizarre trip with an ex to drop off her boxer dog. Long story) - fascinating place to find right next to Heathrow. Thanks for the update re The Ostrich. Would be very intrigued to know how much of the trapdoor legend is true…

@@travelling_turtleUnfortunately, as a former immigration barrister, I associate the name with a very grim immigration detention centre! I used to have to go to the neighbouring Harmondsworth IRC to represent clients at the tribunal there. But that's no doubt rather unfair to the village. Brilliant video (and calming commentary and accompanying music) as always! Always great to see a visit through my own home town of Cambridge. The thing about the hills is that the town itself is right on the edge of the Fens, so if you were to exit to the north of the town you'd immediately go into miles of almost Dutch flat fields and drained marshes, while to the south of the town you go into fairly standard East Anglian hills. I think some rather desperate local cyclist clubs do "mountain biking expeditions" on those hills you went over around Cambridge, so that should give an idea of how deprived we are of heights. Adjacent Lincolnshire has a subdivision called "South Holland", though its etymology is different from the one in the Netherlands and rather confusingly comes from "land of the high spurs"... its highest point is 8 metres about sea level and located within a marsh, so I have no idea where they got that name from.
@travelling_turtle
@travelling_turtle 5 месяцев назад
Thank you so much! I was genuinely surprised by how high you can sometimes feel in the areas south of Cambridge and over towards Haverhill - I think the combination of the modest heights but the very long distances you can see give quite a sense of elevation (especially when on the top deck of a bus…). Did not know that re the etymology of South Holland - in my mind it was partly linked to the involvement of Dutch drainage engineers in reclaiming much of the land around there!
@randomguy555
@randomguy555 5 месяцев назад
@@travelling_turtle I think the long vistas certainly help - if I remember the route correctly, if you had instead looked backwards when climbing at the top of the Gog Magog hills, you would have been able to see across the entirety of Cambridge (definitely would have been able to see the chimney at Addenbrooke's hospital, i.e. the Eye of Sauron) and to the hills on the other side. A bit of elevation goes far when you don't have any!

Thank you for making and sharing another delightful city, and I add my condolences in regard to your footnote. Less importantly, if your travels ever take you to Liverpool Street at 2am again, the Polo Bar cafe almost opposite its main entrance is open 24 hours. I went once, years ago, and it was, y'know, all right. Is it as good as Beigel Bake? Probably not - what is? - but it's an option to consider if time is somewhat tight.

Really interesting trek across the Great South East of England, there is a lot more variety to our towns and countryside than I thought. Really surprising how many buses connect to Heathrow and not just the red buses. No idea how you can stay up for so long, couldn't have ended the journey in a nicer town though, Saffron Walden is so pretty in any weather. Nice walk from Audley End station. Also pretty good value for money on the bus tickets but they really should advertise the discovery type tickets better, same with the rail ranger and rover tickets. Also may your Mum rest in peace, I lost my Nan just over 3 years ago, it was very difficult for a long time but for some reason riding buses to random places all over Hertfordshire, Essex and London helped me cope.
@travelling_turtle
@travelling_turtle 5 месяцев назад
Thanks so much. Yes, plenty of variety within a short distance of London, and Saffron Walden really is a gem. Absolutely agree re promotion of ranger/discovery tickets. At the moment, apart from people doing weird things like this, they generally aren’t going to be good value, but when the fare cap ends, bus companies really need to be ready to promote their cheap tickets (or we manage to actually create a uniform, easy-to-understand series of rover tickets across all the different regions…)
@aaronsmith9209
@aaronsmith9209 5 месяцев назад
@@travelling_turtle Personally I want to see more tickets that are both affordable and encourage people to explore their regions flexibly, this is why I love travelcards so much. The best part is the ticket isn't even required as a cap applies anyway. The only other place I have seen this is in North Wales with the 1bws ticket which is valid in 6 counties and neighbouring English towns for just £6.50 but tap on tap off means you pay no more than that for the day. It should be easier to combine bus and train/ tram too. Also you say challenges like this are weird but you have made the commuter towns just as interesting as all the historic market towns you visited which many people can't do.

Your videos remind me that the journey can be as much fun as the destination. I don't think I'll do it under the timetables you impose, but the point is, there are more not only ways to get around than the heavily traveled, high pricetag tourist routes and conveyances, but those routes take you off the beaten path and into the real country. Just watched this again. Was it only one month since i posted the last comment. I enjoyed this for so many reasons, partly I suppose, because having arrived back from Scotland yesterday, at Taunton station, i found myself once again back on the 28 to Minehead , though thankfully not the 28A, alongside a pleasant, but vaping group heading for Butlins. There are so many allusions that I can relate to in the video, for example the Greenline service. on which my aunt used to take me , from the Old Kent Road to London Airport, just to watch the comings and goings. You felt really special on a Greenline! Last of all, realizing that you gave up refreshment to reach Essex, I have to be generous, and grant you the county . i look forward to more challenges.

Discovered your channel a few years ago and have been watching ever since. I’m from Guildford originally, have worked in Aldershot and moved to St Neots about 10 years ago so this video was particularly interesting to me. Unfortunately, Guildford Bus Station has been that way for ages and though there are plans to redevelop it, nothing seems to have happened with it. The works you saw in St Neots are to improve the Market Square and should be finished by the end of the year, the new houses you saw opposite Loves Farm are for the Widdringham Park development which will eventually extend all the way down to the A428. You might have also noticed some works on the A428 itself which are to build a new duel carriageway from the Black Cat Roundabout to Caxton Gibbet which is scheduled to open in 2027.
@travelling_turtle
@travelling_turtle 5 месяцев назад
That’s a lot of links you have to my bizarre partial circumnavigation of south east England! I must revisit St Neots when the work is done, it looks a fascinating place that I’ve only flashed through on the train before. Indeed, I noticed the solid quality of roadworks at Black Cat - can imagine that is hell on a weekday!

@travelling_turtle
@travelling_turtle 5 месяцев назад
@@jakemorris8903 Not noticeably, though neither are areas with very strong accents (and Aldershot, as squaddie central, has a lot of variety as to where many of its resdents come from!).

Thanks so much for doing this, a really great video (and trip). I remember you passing through Horsham at the time and wishing I wasn’t encumbered by pesky children and able to bring fresh supplies. Great to see the 200 restored to full night service now. Couldn’t agree more about the 63, I’ve been surprised at how quiet peak hours buses leaving Horsham area. For a while they run a direct service via the A road (X1 IIRC) but this was eventually culled. Thanks again.

yet again another incredibly well-done video! brilliantly researched and narrated (though i wish you would possibly invest in a better microphone?). Big thanks for adding the music list in the description, loved the Bach (of course, if you remember me haha), those 'natural trumpets' never get old! Also, the map of all your journeys in the description is excellent, you have really been on some crazy impressive journeys. In this video it was lovely to see you come right past where i study as well as the general area where my ancestors first settled in the uk! You just have to come through North London one day which is where I live haha This was one of the most unusual and curious of all your journeys so far! cant imagine how tiring it must be though. hoping for more soon!

Lovely stuff. I do enjoy your mix of quirky facts and history that you add in. The downside is I'm tempted to do something silly like trying to get to London from my house in Somerset by bus (just doable, oddly there's few connections between Reading and Maidenhead) Sorry for your loss
@travelling_turtle
@travelling_turtle 5 месяцев назад
Thanks so much! Sounds like it could be a fun adventure - I guess the Maidenhead area is a bit too wealthy to have much demand for buses and there’s a very good train service to Reading… (not sure if it would work, but could look at going Reading-Bracknell-Windsor to pick up the 702 direct from there to London…)

Well done! I think if your last bus reached a stop within Essex before the deadline (and I think your video showed it doing that), that's a valid completion criteria, even if you didn't actually get off there. I think you can count the challenge completed when the first stop in the country Reached. After 24 hours, it's understandable wanting to continue to a more sensible place. It would be inhumane to expect you to get off somewhere without scones and clotted cream.
@travelling_turtle
@travelling_turtle 4 месяца назад
Thanks so much! Absolutely, we were at Steeple Bumpstead, the first stop in Essex, about quarter of an hour before the 24 hours ran out, so I reckon that counts!
