From Crayons to Oil Pastels... Is it really worth the 'upgrade'?
Previously we attempted to use Crayola Crayons and the results were amazing, many requested I give Oil Pastels a go and well, I hope you'll enjoy the results of this video...
Be sure to give me more of your awesome ideas in a comment, but I do have a question for those who read these,
Rabbits or Ducks?
Let me know.
Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to watch my video, I hope it brought you some enjoyment during this difficult time, have a great day/night and I'll see you in the next one.

I tend to stay away from pastels because of their greasy texture, but I found that using a tissue or sponge can be helpful to create a smooth blend.

Ways to blend oil pastels: 1. Always better to put base layers down first because once that pastel dust touches anything, it is stained for good. 2. Dont press too hard That is when you start to get the oily waxy build up which causes the next colour to peel off they layer underneath rather than putting anything on. If you have used oil paints, it is pretty much the same problem. In oil paints we tend to wipe the excess oil. Not something we can do here though. Which is why we use paper with more tooth so it can hold more layers of pigment. The lesser the tooth, the sooner that peeling business starts. 2. Once you have a decent amount of layers, you can use tissue, Q-tip/cotton bud for blending them. 3. you can also use a solvent like baby oil or gamsol or something applied with a brush. That helps with the peely problem. 4. Also all colours wont feel the same. Some colours like white, yellow, some reds and browns, brownish greens are utterly smooth and good for blending. The blues tend to be on the scratchier side. That is because of the colour pigment and how it is stabilised. you get used to working with them. Also, if some colours are being too tough, use one of the softer colours to blend (like white in lighter areas or maybe a dark green if the shade calls for it) 5. oil pastels dont have to have a rugged look. They can actually produce pretty realistic, almost oil painting like art. Depends on the style you choose. But yeah, they are definitely more organic looking than something like alcohol markers - if that makes sense. Hope you try them again with all of these things in mind.

Quick tip I learned in art school for blending with oil pastels: get a bunch of extra white pastels and use them to lay a base layer on the paper. The easiest way I've found is to take off the label from the pastel and use the side of the pastel to fill as much surface area as possible. You can tape off the edges of the paper to get a clean edge. With the white underlayer, the other pastels should melt right into it and be super easy to blend.

I would like to see chalk pastels after this, I love using them. For oil pastels, I recommend having an exacto knife to shave off stray colors that stick to your white or other pastels. For some smooth blending you could also use a little, and I mean a little, alcohol or paint thinner to blend the pastels. Just make sure you use the right paper. Nice work!

The best way to blend both oil pastels as well as charcoal is a paper "pencil" that is just very tightly rolled paper. It has a good tip and if you know what they look like it you can just make your own. It give a great smooth texture with pastels

I was given these pastels in art therapy and I found that they worked best for me when I carefully streaked the color across the relevant area (really light, as if I was hinting at shading) and then smeared the color with my fingertips. That gave me a somewhat even color on which I could build up my drawing. I tried using a q-tip for more control and it works passably well for my purposes.

We often use oil pastels at school and, I really have to tell you, you actually need to use your fingers to blend the colors together. The heat and friction motion is what will "melt" the medium and blend the colors, plus the natural oil that's already on your skin helps alot too. Just a quick warning though, if you think that technic was messy, wait until you get them all over your hands, boy it's nasty! ...but you will get much better results :). Other than that, I'm newly subscribed to your channel and I want to say, I really love your work, it's amazing and you're really talented :D!!

As others have already said, using cotton swabs (q-tips) to blend as well as trying the swabs with a bit of baby oil really blends well. I recommend trying them on a slightly more textured paper like colored construction paper or the Canson brand artist papers (they come in many colors). I like using a toned or colored paper for my pastels and I always buy extra white pastels for blending. To keep them neater try blocking colors in instead of blending on top of each other. Once you've blocked them in you can blend with cotton swabs (with or w/o baby oil).
@aoifeoffaerun

Now, one thing about oil pastels. Lay down your colour/s, then use the pad of a finger to rub it in. This is how you truly blend them and ensure the white dots where colour didn't saturate are filled in. Next, you should try out watersoluable oil pastels, they are amazing. Recently watched an artist draw a My Neighbour Totoro scene with them, and it was phenomenal.

There's a lot more you can do with oil pastels. You can blend using other oil pastels (as you did here). Blend using folded tissue paper, blend using blending stumps, blend using oil such as baby oil and a brush (gives more smooth look) you can have an underpainting using acrylics or water colours then layer your pastels on top. There's so much more you can do :)

I have only used them as a background. Laying down a couple colors, and with my finger, rubbing, moving the pigment around to get a nice blend. I don't use as much of the stick as you might think, as I don't "color" with them. I move color around. You might try this technique for a more freestyle look.

I suggest you to keep something thick below the paper tho provide more volume to the paper. That would help you to blend and give a smoother redult. And you should try using your fingers for blending some areas. Don't use more colors use less colour and use your fingers to blend in the edges, then it won't be so messy as you see oil pastel is based on blending
@FelineFurKin

This was so fun. The bits that come off are annoying, I think they do that more when they’re cheaper, though these are fairly good. Sometimes they’re scratchy due to a coating that should come off when they’re used more, idk. I love when you found the right angle to blend but then said it would make your hand hurt, the way you said it was funny, but ouch. I like using oil pastels occasionally, I find it a faff to blend and hard to do details, but they’re so vibrant and immediate.

Okay, first of all-great video! So, here is an idea I figured out as I want to keep my oilpastell art safe and laminate it. I did thick (!) layer of oilpastell on aquarell paper. It looked like anHundertwasser. Then I put it in a plastiksheet-thingy and laminated it. It was ruined, but cool at the same time! So I did some experiments with my iron and more art. Oil pastels aren't really designed for detailed precise work, detail is more expressionistic. Oil pastels are a wonderful medium to work with, after a while you will see that when trying to apply colour the colour underneath comes off so you need to let it dry which takes about 2 days depending on the brand, then you can put more colour over it. Thanks for the fun video. Cheers!

I am only a 13 year old but I have had lots of experience with pastels. But I have seen that using a lighter shade of a overall area as a base is very affective like when you do a base color on your marker art also for smoother looks try blending with your thumb, piece of tissue, or a blending tool (usually used for charcoal art) . If you use you thumb make sure to have a disinfectant wipe next to u to prevent mixing colors.
