Here's my attempt to copy Stephen King's writing routine! No coffee, a goal of 6 pages (???), and NO DISTRACTIONS.
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
How did you come up with your current writing routine? Do you also take bits and pieces from other writers and incorporate them?
Would you ever attempt to write like Stephen King or does one element seem more difficult than others? (For me, it was definitely only working on the one project at a time.)
Who should I try to write like next?! (Famous author or authortuber!)

In "On Writing" he explains the door closed/door open reference. You write the first draft with no one seeing it (door closed). When you revise, you invite criticism in from others (door open). I've never managed that. I tend to blurt ideas and read pages and paragraphs to my family as the first draft progresses.

I've read that going the path of updating others before the first draft is done leads to never finishing the story in publishable form. Better to keep it to yourself as telling others seems to take the wind out of your sails, vent the steam in your creative boiler, and any number of other metaphors for keeping you from finishing your first draft.

"Do not come lightly to the blank page". Adverb. It's a fad in current writing advice to say adverbs are bad. They are not; it is their overuse that is bad. I have never had a manuscript handed back to me because it contained too many adverbs (and I admittedly use them more than most.) Not all ideas have the perfect verb that encapsulates them. This is why we have adverbs -- to stress, to expand, to mix two concepts in order to achieve a better description. Adverbs have a place, serve a purpose, and provide texture to writing. Just use them well, not indiscriminately.
@KateCavanaugh
@KateCavanaugh 5 лет назад
I think your last sentence nails it! And I agree, that's my stance on adverbs too. I feel that way about a lot of writing style choices -- it's the overuse, at the cost of something better, that bothers me.
@cariad123
@cariad123 5 лет назад
If they weren't important/useful they wouldn't exist
@kazemizu6284
@kazemizu6284 5 лет назад
I think the 'bad adverb' thing comes from people only understanding half of the problem and generalizing. Adverbs only pose a problem, when they are unintentional repetition, as in, when the adverbs meaning is already encompassed in the verb. P.ex.: 'she smiled happily' vs. 'she smiled sadly' The first feels redundant while the second gives more information. An amazing example for good adverb use would also be 'killing me softly'
@kestrel77
@kestrel77 5 лет назад
No, King is justified in saying never to use them in fiction writing because their only use is to tell instead of show which breaks the first rule of writing stories. If something is being stressed, expanded, or mixed, then show that actually happening by providing an example. In the case of "do not come lightly..." he is purposefully telling and not showing because this is his personal advice.

Pulled randomly from the first free online sampling of one of Stephen King's works I could find: "Annie Wilkes occasionally lost her centre. For periods of time which could last only a few seconds or longer, there was nothing solid in her. Everything about her was in motion, with no basis on which to rest. It was as if a hole opened up inside her and swallowed every human quality she possessed. She seemed to have no memory of these times. In contrast, however, her body was very solid and strong, especially for a middle-aged woman." -- Misery, Chapter Two, paragraph six. FIVE adverbs. TWO end in the dreaded "-ly". Stephen King uses adverbs. ALL authors use adverbs. I used SEVEN in my initial response's last paragraph alone, yet no one called me on it. And I purposely did it. (Oops! There, I just did it again: "purposely"). King is disingenuous about adverbs. He says it to get writers' attention and focus on their word choice, and has a valid point there. But adverbs serve a purpose, and he most certainly DOES use them. Don't let his hypocrisy prevent you.

About Kings refinemend process: he ones said in an interview that after finishing a story he would work on another project and return to the story after some weeks (or months, im not quite sure) and read it. After being away from the story for some time your way of looking at it changes, you are at that point more of a reader and less of the writer, it is like taking a step back to look at the greater picture.

I took Stephen King's pages per day as literal book pages, as in 300 words per book page. I know in his younger days he would aim for 10 pages = 3000 words per day but as he's gotten older this has reduced a little to around 6 pages or 2000 words.
@KateCavanaugh
@KateCavanaugh 5 лет назад
Okay, that makes complete sense. I'm not great at guessing how many words are on a book page (or I should say, I haven't counted them up!) but someone else said the exact same thing. 2000 is a great goal and definitely sounds more doable daily in the long run.

Average page word count for a formatted novel at a font size of 12 points is approximately 250 - 300 words depending on the amount of dialog. 10 pages boils down to approximately 2000 words given reasonable amounts of dialog. It just depends on whether it's necessary for the effect you're going for. King and other people have said you often don't need an adverb to say what you need to say effectively because often using a stronger verb is better. "He shouted at the TV and threw it across the room." is a lot better than "He spoke very, very, loudly at the TV and threw it across the room." You just want to try and eliminate words that don't serve a purpose.
@KateCavanaugh
@KateCavanaugh 5 лет назад
@@TheRachaelLefler Yes! That perfectly answers it. :) Choose strong, accurate words. But sometimes an adverb can be that too (or fit the flow of the sentence, etc.). Just don't rely on adverbs!

I love Stephen King. I'm from Maine and he's come to our school many times. He came to one of our authors nights where the best piece from each class was read to parents, teachers and others. Imagine being in 5th grade and you have to read YOUR stuff to not only an audience but Stephen King himself. Met him many times after that over the years but every time I am just as start struck. He's a super cool guy. Not sure if he still has a place in Bangor or not, but when I was a kid everyone knew which one was Stephen Kings house. His philosophy on writing is awesome. It served me well all through middle, high school and college. If you write with no distractions and aim to knock out x amount of pages, all you have to do it come back and edit. Makes school assignments easy vs the whole taking a weeks to write an assignment.

Hahaha I loved how excited you got with the cool features, but I’d be the exact same way! This is a really interesting idea. As far as “famous” writing methods go, Stephen King’s is probably the furthest from my own. I love adverbs, I’m a better writer at night, daily word count/page goals stress me out and compromise my writing quality, and I learned that editing as I go doesn’t work for me. And I definitely take more than three months to finish a story! But I do enjoy water, so I agree with him there 😂

In college I used to play about 6 overlapping RU-vid videos to get the effect of being in a room full of people talking, where the voices blend together. It was music, talking, affirmations, and binaural beats. I found it very calming and it blocks out whatever is going on in the room.

Honestly I find silence so much more distracting. I can block out noise seeing as in school you kinda have too but the second there is nothing my brain goes crazy. It’s as if I need something to distract the, “hey let’s think about life and say screw all to focusing” part of my brain.

A little late to the party, but i can't write in silence I have to have music playing while I write, the louder the better. I also have different genres of music that I have playing, depending on the genre I'm writing. If I'm writing anything contemporary (horror, thrillers, crime) I listen to rock, heavy metal and dark symphonic ambient tracks. If I'm writing fantasy I listen to Bardcore and fantasy Soundtracks, if I'm writing sci-fi I listen to Sci-fi movie soundtracks and cyberpunk music. It all helps get me in the right head space and it helps with setting tone and helps create atmosphere in the fiction, at least for me.

Great video. Seems like SK does a high-concentration long sprint. Bear in mind that SK tends to overwrite his drafts and edits out redundant words. He has a great example of it in "On Writing"
@KateCavanaugh
@KateCavanaugh 5 лет назад
His routine was a fun one to copy just because it's SO different from my own. I'm a fast drafter / Zero Drafter who writes really short drafts and always ends up adding words with each sequential draft. The high-concentration long sprint is a great way to put it and I found it exhausting haha. But definitely my favorite part of his routine and the "no distractions" element is something I've been working to replicate moving forward!

I love your experiments so much :) In On Writing, Stephen King says he never outlines and spends some time after the first draft working on draft 2 and 3. I guess his process isn't for everyone (I'm a HUGE plotter so that wouldn't work for me), but the idea of having 3000 words written before it's even noon... Count me in XD Can't wait for the other 'experiments' of writers' routines ;)

Back in the dinosaur age typewriters either had elite or pica alphabets. Elite was 12 characters per inch and Pica was slightly bigger at 10 characters per inch. Then too, most writers had to turn in double spaced pages to publishers so it makes sense that Stephen King would just go on and do the draft double spaced to give room for changes, etc. I remember it was rule of thumb that one page double spaced averages 250 words typewritten, not sure whether that is using Pica or Elite. He started out typing and then graduated to his first word processor, a Wang System 5, as soon as they came out in the early eighties. Some fonts are smaller than others so that can affect word/page count, like Garamond which is my favorite. According to an article about word count, if you use a 12 point font and one inch margins, you will average 500 words, single spaced or 250 double spaced per page.

Haha, this is one of the best "write like" episodes. I'm pretty sure Stephen King drinks black tea though. But I think he avoids strong caffeine due to his prior addiction to uppers (cocaine), though I'm not sure. I read his book On Writing every few years - it's one of his best works. I am on board with his elimination of screen-based distractions, but I tend to write way better near a big window. Natural light does wonders for my productivity.

What a great idea!! I'm with you, I love my adverbs hahaha! I love writing them and I love reading them (I'm looking at you J.K. Rowling lol). I read somewhere that King uses double spacing, so 2K is 6 pages, but getting an extra 1K out of your writing session is never a bad thing! I would LOVE to write 2K a day! I'm wondering if this works for King because he's published so many books, he can have a routine like that. I know for me, since I indie publish, I have days where I have to focus on laying out the book, or cover design, or recording audiobooks (etc.) So writing everyday isn't in the cards for me unless I have nothing else on my plate. It's interesting though because when I hear 'writing 2k a day' I always get super excited and instantly want to make it a part of my daily routine hahaha! If I could just wake up my brain in the morning!
@KateCavanaugh
@KateCavanaugh 5 лет назад
Yesssss, you make great points! The upside to indie publishing is that you're fully in control and the downside to that means you have to do it all yourself which means that your work is a lot more than just writing. (I know tradpub writers also have to market themselves as well, but we can all agree it's not AS much work as doing it all indie.) So I'm only a day into the new ~routine~ of 2K without distractions (and unlike this video, where it only took me 2 hours, this time it took me 4 hours) BUT I am loving it. We'll see how long I can keep it up but I think that's the biggest thing I took away from this experiment.
