Loved joining in on the video. Great tips from your subscribers. Tip- always bring multiple sources for maps. Paper, iPhone etc…

Call me old fashioned but a big yes on the paper maps.✌️

When I was a scoutmaster I always told my scouts to study the map before they go and commit it to memory as much as possible, even if you only have a general idea of where things are. That way, if you do lose your way, you at least know the general direction you need to go.

I like those tips except for the one about leaving your hiking shoes/boots out with loose laces. I use camp shoes. As far as the pee bottle tip goes, I keep neglecting to bring along a pee bottle and have so far been able to manage, but the last time I went camping there were extreme downpours on and off all night, mostly on, and I was holding my pee for hours, awaiting a break in the rain. It was brutal. My first tip is to use a Hemplight to help you light campfires, wood stoves and alcohol stoves. Alfie Aesthetics (an old channel) had a lot of fantastic tips in one video. One such hack is to bring bread bag fasteners (not the ties, but the plastic, square-ish clips) to use as clothespins. Another tip I have is that every backpacker should take along a small container of Vick's Vapor Rub and a sandwich baggie. You're going to want to use that Vicks vapor rub on your feet every night and every morning, You're going to want to use that sandwich baggie by which to apply it to your feet so you don't end up with Vicks all over your fingers. You want Vick's on your feet every night because it kills candida foot fungus which causes athlete's foot and toenail infections. You can get rid of athlete's foot. But trust me, I got candida toenail fungus from my parents' shower because my stepdad got it from his tennis club's showers, and I can't get rid of it over a span of 30 years and running. You never want to risk getting that toe nail fungus. It can can put you in the grave. My stepdad eventually came down with cancer, and I often wonder if it was because of his chronic candida toenail fungus infection. He also had it on his fingernails. He had it badly. Another way it can kill you is that you can get a cut near your toenail and if the fungus gets into your bloodstream it might kill you. It is common for backpackers to get cuts on their feet, so I would imagine a backpacker with toenail fungus has an elevated risk of this type of fatility. In the morning, I apply more Vick's to prevent blisters. I never get blisters if I use Vick's. And I use lightweight mid boots, which are reputed to cause more blisters than are trail runners. Besides that, you can use Vick's as an accelerant on damp firewood and as a mechanical lubricant, such as on bolt threads or to lubricate a squeaking pack frame. My final tip has more to do with etiquette. If you're lucky enough to know some other backpackers and one of them invites you to go backpacking at some destination that they want to reach, you can accept the invitation, you can decline the invitation, but you cannot be that person who then says, "Yeah let's go backpacking. But I want to go to this other place instead. Let's go there." I had a group trip fall apart this fall because of one such guy. He's a bit of a control freak. Good friend, but he wants to be in control all the time. Don't be that guy or gal.

Part 2 would be fun. I love having a groundsheet under my hammock to put my feet on when I get up to water a tree at night. I also use it to wipe my feet on before getting back into the hammock. Also clear a path of things that would hurt your feet at night so you can get from the hammock to the tree and back during the nighttime watering.

I love this idea, but how do you secure it to the ground? I’m thinking of trying to use some very lightweight stakes next time, but I had a real problem with it blowing around before.

1. use your bug-proof head-net secured with rubber bands over your boots to keep bugs/frogs/snakes etc. out as they air out overnight. 2. If you bring a sit pad, place it under your sleep pad at your hips/butt area because that's where most of your weight will be - especially when you sit up in your tent. It helps prevent punctures. 3. If you're cooking pasta, cold soak it when you get to camp. This softens it and makes it quicker to cook, thus saving fuel. 4. If you use a pump sack, it can be used as a dry bag to carry clothing etc, then emptied out for use to inflate.

My biggest gear regret on my last backpacking trip was not bringing my collapsible Nalgene canteen that I use as a pee bottle (clearly marked). It wasn't just a matter of convenience, but also affected my hydration because I drank less in the evening so I didn't have to pee as much. BTW I'm 60.
