I TRIMMED CARDS?! 🙃 PSA Return 

Just sent in a 1980 bird, magic rookie that I have been sitting on for over 30 years and PSA said it was trimmed … no way!!! I lost $300 that I paid to send the card in because I thought for sure it was at least a 9… beautiful card! 🤬🤬🤬 The most upsetting thing about it is there is absolutely nothing I can do about it …

PSA didn't "unknowingly" let trimmed cards through. They give preferential treatment to certain people and grade cards knowing they're trimmed.

I had a 1971 Ken Dryden RC which IMO was a 9. Got it back and it was an 8. I re-subbed it and it came back trimmed. I guess the third time was the charm, it finally got the 9 it should have.

Nice video. It doesn’t have the drama and anticipation of opening packs looking for that big hit but it is interesting to see your insights into another side of the hobby. I never thought some of my favourite videos to watch would be a player from a team I hated (Go Jays) opening card packs

I understand the reason grading companies began..to give the consumer a legitimate product..in my opinion..it's gotten completely out of hand..it's all about submitting the cards for 10's and letting people with disposable income buy them up..now mind you to each their own..and if that's what pushes the market then so be it..I am glad to see the resurgence in the hobby..but in my humble opinion.. grading companies give the public an illusion of an exact science which in reality is just an opinion of someone having a good or bad day... Phil I made the leap to grading my PC just over 2 years ago. I was very hesitant. But after a lot of thought I decided to send items to PSA. They came back with grades I could respect. Much older cards nothing a 10 though. But after seeing what has happened to the hobby due to PSA, I have no trust at all.

Great video Phil. I'm old enough (67) to have seen a number of ups and downs in the collectables market. I was a Federal LEO, an Economist involved in Public Policy and Federal Regulation, and a professional stamp, sports cards and comic dealer for 45 years. I recently left some comments on Philmington's recent video on base rookie graded price jumps in the recent months and what I see coming in card investment. In regards to PSA, the short answer is that they need to be more transparent. They would do well to refund all fees associated with trimmed cards until they develop a clear policy for submissions. In a more sweeping view then PSA as a subsidiary of Collector's Universe, a publicly traded company, it would behoove them not to tick off customers like you with resources to cause them trouble. And most notable, and imo more important than the trimmed issue is they need to reform their fee structure. Having a submitter evaluate the value of their own cards, and therefore the grade they expect, is not a good look. When submission fees can range from the $10 or so a card with mass discount to $1500 a card for expedited grading, then outsiders - including regulators, may interpret that process an incentive to skew the grading process. Theoretically, it takes the same amount of time to grade your cheap cards as the expensive ones, unless expert knowledge, such as on certain vintage cards comes into play...

I'm like you I dont care for BGS and only look into buying psa unless its something I'll consider crossing over. Plus there cases are just so much cleaner and sharper. Thanks

Which one of the big 3 grading companies a collector chooses doesn’t matter. All 3 have the occasional grading inconsistency issue due to human error... and that’s never going away.

Beckett although might be a little pricey, are the most trusted and reliable.

Brought 97-98 flair legacy collection row 1 Jordan PSA 9 from PWC a few year back. Found out it was trimmed. Got my money back. I wish it wasn’t trimmed. Nice rare card to buy and collect 😁

I would love to see a video of you showing how you determine if a card should be subbed. You obviously have a good eye with all those 10s.

Very nice. PSA is driving on ice and out of control in one direction and now have over corrected in the opposite direction. They will eventually straighten it out and head down the road pointed north. I still like SGC cases better. Got a bunch of card coming back tomorrow from GMA. Can’t beat that price.

Agree much prefer PSA. Cases are neat whilst BGS can't even put a dated looking sticker on straight, kills cards for me. I decase and send to PSA

Very interesting on the "trimmed cards", PSA has a lot of collectors unhappy and grading in general is being questioned more every day. This is one more example of the many imperfections in grading cards. The amount of time it takes to get cards back now a days is way too long. Thanks for your transparency and love for the hobby!

The same thing that happened with your “trimming” happened with me. Beckett came to my lcs last month, and a few months ago I opened a WHOLE CASE of 89 upper deck high series, and got 19 Griffeys. I picked out the best 9 to grade, and two get a 9, and one an 8.5. And the rest were “TRIMMED”. 🤦‍♂️ that tray pissed me off. They were all at least 9s.

I am a loyal customer of PSA but am quickly losing my faith in them. The TURN AROUND TIME has become Ridiculous!!! I get that they are doing somethings right and are very busy but then they should be hiring more people to maintain turn around times. I submitted cards in December with a 32 day turn around time and now its up to 68 Business Days. 4 months to grade cards is stupid and they are so rude when you ask them why that is. I've seen houses built in less time.

My store will trim cards that were originally hand cut, like the 1962 post cereal cards. Its a great way to get a higher grade and resale value, especially since most of them look like they were cut by a 6yo. We use a paper cutter. Definitely not worth the risk for any regular cards though. Getting caught doing crap like that would put us out of business, its not even something we would consider. Reputation is everything for a local card shop.

You make some good point, Phil. If those chrome cards are indeed cut short from the factory PSA needs to know their business and grade them. It’s just lazy to send them back like they did. Do a little research PSA!

Haven't graded cards with anyone yet (new guy to the card collecting business) But I love all the arraez cards. Had me drooling over them, not even afraid to state that

I actually run an industrial die cutter. The knife on the die can be slightly bent causing size issues, it’s not gonna be noticeable to the human eye, that’s on the operator of the die cutter who cut that card. If there’s one, then there’s more.

PSA owns the largest market share in a tough industry under constant scrutiny. Recently they've had a capacity issue which has lowered the quality of their process. Turnaround time, accuracy of grades, etc. They'll either scale up and survive or else BGSs market share will consume them.

I got a card back from Beckett trimmed that I know wasn't trimmed. All the graders have the same issue. Honestly it has more to do with technology making it difficult to identify altered cards than the graders. They have to do something and are erring on the side of too much caution.

Phil PSA is awful man, and have been for years. Some of their higher ups have literally been indicted. No idea why you're such a staunch defender of their crony and flawed business.

I dunno. I personally don't really do much grading. I collect just for me, with no plans on reselling so I don't really care. I have purchased graded cards though. I have to imagine that they get sooooo many incoming cards that there are going to be mistakes though.

I wish cards had to be at least 10 yrs old to be graded. The influx of unworthy cards is y they take so long to be graded for everyone.

I use PSA to make sure the cards i buy on ebay are legit dont care to much about the grading. The cards that they said were cut , are the bowing a lot of cards will start to curl and makes them smaller.

I wonder if you resubmitted these cards in a future submission, what would the outcome be? I had one experience with PSA, and it didn't go well and in turn they don't get our business. Video was interesting and informative!

They say this alot!!!! Got 3 out of 10 Mike trout rc cards back that they claim were cut... Lol they were pulled from the pack and sent in... But at are shop we see at least 1 to 3 come back saying trimmed every month

I think PSA has a lot of issues. And currently they can control the swing of currency on sports cards immensely. The same with BGS. Understand they’re backed up due to the sports card boom we’re currently in. It hasn’t been this way in a while. It’s a new age. This is the time for SGC to strike. Along with their new sleek case, their redone website, and their new database, they can become a true modern card grader. That’s respected at least. All of my PC items will be going to SGC from now on. As well as all of my cards valued under $100 that I want to grade to flip. Prices are getting close to matching.

You did better than me several years ago I bought a Mark Prior auto rookie back when he was hot and didn't realize it was trimmed paid about 50 for it. I sent it into bgs and it came back ungraded with no refund so I lost the money from the card and the for the fee.

I got about 15-20 Arraez Parallels at PSA too. Hopefully I get 10s like you did lol. Sweet Reveal! Lot of nice cards man. Glad your grading cards. It’s definitely a great return on investment. I love grading. PSA is taking forever with their returns though. I had a 65 bulk order with a group from September and we just got it back like 2 weeks ago. Wait times are brutal. However I prefer PSA to BGS - the look of the slab im a fan of, and In my opinion PSA is tougher grader on corners. I’d rather great corner grades then surface or centering if that makes sense.

This sucks for you Phil but I’d think in the long run PSA tightening up their grading will benefit us all.

I just got notified that my 1962 Topps 320 Hank Aaron is N6: MINIMUM SIZE REQUIREMENT also my 1954 Bowman 45 Ralph Kiner has N1: EVIDENCE OF TRIMMING, the card edges are messed up all the way around it and it grades at best a psa 2 so what would be the point of trimming when the card is bent and that low a grade anyway. the damage is still there. Oh well, All i can say is Long Live the HOF Cards

I had to laugh, how PSA said that a $10 2019 hockey card had been trimmed. But I'm expected to believe that they didn't know high grade vintage cards had been trimmed. Some how those fell through the cracks?? WHAT A JOKE! Great video, keep em coming.

Great video, Phil. I submitted 1 card to Psa over 20 years ago. It was the Upper Deck trade rookie trade card of Shaq. You had to send in a redemption card that was inserted into series 1 packs. I did this and upper deck sent the redemption card which I left in the top holder and never took it out. It looked gem mint too. Anyways I sent the card to psa some years later and they sent it back saying it was trimmed. How could this be? I never took it out of the top loader and received it from upper deck. Anyways this card was getting good money at the time, so I thought oh well they screwed me out of my money, but I can still sell it, after all it didnt look trimmed. Then I noticed this half dime corner size ding in the bottom left. What the heck. Not only they screwed me out of my money they also damaged my card to the point where nobody would buy it. That was the first and last time I had a card graded. I been collecting over 30 years and I dont need a 3rd world grading company telling me my card is mint, gem mint or pristine.I actually feel sorry for all the people that spend big money on these graded cards.

I prefer Beckett when buying my personal collection because they are more strict on the grading but also because they have the subs. I won’t buy a Beckett without the subs. With that said psa is more common and I do like the cases like you do because they are stackable. But I still love my Beckett 9.5 and 10s.

A $5 89 donruss Griffey in a PSA 10 is worth trimming, so yes people will trim a $10 card.

If PSA is going to say its trimmed they need to provide the exact reason why. Honestly they need sub grades too, their grading sucks. Im looking at my 10s vs 8s of same card going wtf!

I had a "Miscut" '87 Donruss Greg Maddux RC on EBAY for $1.00 AS IS. I got it out of a wax box from BBCE. Buyer acused me of "trimming" a $10 card I sold for $1 and got a "Neutral Feedback" response. Absolutely ridiculous. People don't think. PSA'S problem with altered cards was almost exclusively vintage cards but at minimum the altered cards were high dollar ...not lower valued or lower desired cards. Also--there should be an alternative pricing for cards that never make it to the slab. Perhaps still charge us $5 for the "Professional opinion and handling" but not FULL price.

Would have been nice if PSA would have at least given you some credit towards a future submission. Maybe a e-mail to a standing board member could spice up one of their Monday mourning meetings...

I have like the way Beckett looks with thw Gold and Silver lines TBH...but PSA will be better as i get older with my blind ass lol

Thx man,.....Great informative video!!!...To each his own, I've been around for both companies and the grading system can go both ways for both BGS And PSA.....after all it is someone's opinion about grading a card in the first place no matter who's grading it!!

How do you know they take their time grading? Just because it takes a long time to return? I feel grading is a racket and folks would have more cash to buy cards if they’d just get out of the mindset that some anonymous person in a basement somewhere giving their subjective opinion on the quality of your card matters. All grading does is add an arbitrary inflated value. The grader is constipated or got dumped and you get a bad grade, they’re human. They aren’t grading on an even scale, there is no curve, it’s not scientific. If it was the entire scandal wouldn’t have happened.

PSA has issues. I sent in like 10 rookies from 1986-87 Fleer basketball, including 2 Jordan rookies. Before I sent them in, I compared every card, looked for issued, matched the cards up, everything. I know these all came from the same set of boxes back in the 1986. The only card they didn't grade was a Jordan rookie, giving it a MinSizeRrequirement. I know that tends to happen more on older cards, but I compared them to the others before and when I got them back, and this Jordan is no different than all the others. It's like they are overcompensating, and honestly, I think if they don't grade a card for something like that, they shouldn't charge you, or at least put it in a case and call it authentic, something, I don't know.

Minimum size not met isn’t charged by psa. I do group subs often. You shouldn’t be charged for that one.

They didn’t update their system they just decided to randomly pick cards to flag. Also, they didn’t not catch them, they let them slip through on purpose. I’ve had pack pulled cards come back trimmed which is crazy. I’ve had minsize a few times, I get that. It’s just part of the hustle.

I submitted a Topps Update Max Scherzer rookie to PSA. They sliced almost the entire front of the card with a blade. They didn't refund me for damaging the card and still charged me to get it graded.

PSA is a rotten crooked grading company. I sent them 6 cards for grading and they came back "trimmed" and other bullshit notations, none were graded. These card were pulled out of different wax packs. I switched to Beckett and got honest gradings. Forget PSA. I'll report them to BBB.

There’s no right answer to trimming with respect to grading. I have a massive collection, and don’t do grading. I do see it was a way to differentiate one card from the other for older cards, when many were made and all were the same, but today, we have serial numbering. Grading modern to me seems pointless unless you flip.
