I got a batch of the yellow ones when I found them on sale for 2 bucks US. They all leak and loose pressure. It was a bust, so now I have 5 or 6 gathering dust. I'm glad yours are working for now. 😀 Thanks for the video!

When buying cheap Chinese tools, always be suspicious when something costs less than 1/2 of what everyone else is selling it for. Seems like the more popular designs end up getting their own counterfeit look-a-likes, ironically.

Thanks, Rob, and good luck with yours! Got myself a pair of cans a year ago of the really cheap variety: 3 USD and with the yellow plastic spout with brass nozzle. No leakage anywhere on the top parts: pump, nozzle or joints/ plugs. My problem is that one of the cans leaks - even ISO 68 way oil creeps thru the bottom flange.

@Xynudu 5 лет назад
Hi Johan, I notice there is no seal between the screw pump section and the metal can, but it didn't seem to leak on either of mine. The pots look to be OK. Maybe soldering the bottom flange would fix it. That's how my good Rega cans are made. Cheers Rob

Thanks for the tip, Rob - they seem pretty tight everywhere else (where it doesn't count as much as in the bottom). Hope I can get the can clean enuff to make solder suck into the bottom flange! My homebrewed way oil (mix spindle & chain saw oil to ISO 68) is kind of sticky, and I wonder how and if it'll burn off as cleanly as the paint will... All the best! Johan/ DIYSwede

I noticed after the review that the silver metal screw on the yellow (more expensive) one was leaking oil. It turned out to be stripped on the thread. The cheap red one was perfect, no issues, so you know which one to get. Also check out this (Polish version ?) made by Yato which looks slightly better: ru-vid.com/show-UCdCYY4hzHKUzhthzwK5FoXAvideos Cheers Rob

I bought a clear plastic one about 2 years ago, I can’t remember how much I paid but it goes for £2.95 now including P&P. I bet I use about 1% of the oil you do as I only use it on my woodwork tools and around the house with light machine oil, but for my use it’s been perfect. Thank you for a very interesting video, I think videos like this are incredibly helpful for the small hobbyist.

Haven't tried these but might give them a go. Locally, $15 scores you a Kinchrome oiler from Bunnings. Spend 10 minutes soldering on the rigid spout for a good seal and you are in business. Even comes with a spare brass tip! Keeps my old Hercus 260 humming.

That red one of yours seems to work well, especially for the price. Like you show, the quality on a product, one factory to another on an almost identical-looking product, can be rather dramatic. Guess the lower prices on some imported tooling comes as a gamble in whether the tool will cut the mustard or not.
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 5 лет назад
It's a gamble for sure on some stuff. I've always found indexable tooling to be pretty dependable, but other things like collets and oilcans can be a nightmare unless you spend the big bucks. I noticed there is also a subtle difference in the pump body casting between the two. Cheers Rob

@Getbent97 5 лет назад
In my experience, cheap oil cans are cheap for a reason. I've currently got two and they have to be the worst things I own. Somehow they leak out the top, you fill them, go to the garage a few days later and all the oil is sitting in the lathes drip tray. Someone could make a killing manufacturing repro Rega oil cans and the likes.
@TheOtherBill
@TheOtherBill 5 лет назад
Agreed. I've never seen a Rega but here is the US the Eagles were once common. Now they sell for almost their weight in gold used. There's a Swiss company - Reilang - making some high quality cans but they're $60 US with shipping. So I'm usung a Goldenrod right now which is not great but adequate.
@incubatork

I have 2 of the red ones that i got at a local flea market, both leak under pressure round the piston rod at the back of the trigger and one round the pot as they have no sealing ring. I cured that putting a thin gasket on, it has to be very thin as it only has thread for about 1 full turn, I have not cured the trigger leaks yet but they work reasonably well other than that.
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 5 лет назад
Hey Derek, This is supposed to be the new improved model. Time will tell. It's no Rega but it's cheap for anyone on a tight budget. It's a lot better than the last one (and only) Chinese oil can I bought. Cheers Rob

Make it fun for you and everything else will follow. Keep the BangGood reviews honest. Can’t imagine watching lies about that stuff 😀 I think we all know the cost/quality ratio for their products and you should review them accordingly 😀 You wouldn’t believe it I was checking out cameras today thinking I should post a few helpful videos. I have been in IT for 25+ years and was a Fitter and Turner before that. I created a you tube account a couple of years ago to send a video to friends. I wonder what I named it? xynudu I’m still working full time so it’s hard to fit new stuff in. But I think I’ll start collecting the camera bits and start off slow 😀 I’ll have to prepare myself for the inevitable negative comments. I’d like to totally ignore them but I bet that will be difficult. I thought it was interesting that you are thinking about winding back a bit, after 10 years on the same day I’m looking at video cameras. I posted a few pictures and a story about making my own single tine ripper years ago. That page used to show the number of views and the last time I looked it was over 10,000. I just went and found that post againand it doesn’t have the view count any more. Oh well 🤠
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 5 лет назад
Hi Dave, Most negative comments are unjustified and come from biased or ignorant people. So don't fret over that. Always approve comments and that way you have total control over what gets shown and what gets the chop. I don't hesitate to delete any inappropriate comments and anti social viewers go straight to the sin bin, never to be seen again. The only thing they can do then is give you a negative thumbs down, but it really burns them up. Ha Ha. Also never respond to negative comments. You will never win the argument. Do that and all will be roses. Cheers Rob

Hi Robbie, so let me make sure I understand what I just watched, a man who has if you will the Rolls Royce of oil cans (quite a few @ that) takes the time for those of us who are are at the "mercy" of border line useless oil can's, flooding the market, takes the time to let us know which VW (volkswagen) of oil cans is the one to buy. Thanks for the heads up, and a honest review. Now if your grown tired of owning all of those "Rolls Royce of oil cans," just drop one in the mail, to me here in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State. {Just kidding.} We here in the states, have an expression: when presented with a low hanging curve ball, (Ref: American Baseball) just hit it out of the park. For those who may not understand the ref to the "low hanging curve ball," a pitcher in (American Baseball) throwing to the batter, a "low hanging curve ball," is the LAST PITCH / lease pitch you want to throw, because even an average batter will hit it out of the park, for a home run. :->)

Hi Dave, Yes, I reviewed this one for the troops. Cheap can be cheerful. Just remains to be seen how long it lasts. Looks like they are. Cheers Rob

Oil cans are low tech but the Chinese cannot make them, they always leak and do not pump. As for price with mass production techniques all they are worth is 5 bucks. In the UK you can buy a can of tomatoes for 50 pence, bigger than than those pots, food grade so the tin can costs about 5 pence. To me 5 dollars is too expensive for something that will leak and fail to pump.

Interestingly, I just bought an oil can for this purpose for a new (2nd hand) lathe at work this week. Russian "Ryazan" lathe. 3 metre bed. She's a solid beast. I bought an el cheapo to try (12 bucks I think) from Blackwoods. It has a conical brass tip to get in the oiling point, and a flexible hose so the can can be kept upright when pumping away on the horizontal points. Seems alright so far.......................

I lashed out on one of these www.jensputzier.com/reilang/reilang-oilers/reilang-r003-252-merkur-precision-oiler-with-double-pump-2.html and it's a joy to use. I oil stuff now just for fun...it even works upside down. The engineering is top notch and I think it'll outlast me. Only quibble was having to replace the neoprene neck washer with a more robust dowty washer (which I found out about from Steve Jordon's channel).

Hi Rob, Good review, Thank you. I've had that style oil can in my shopping cart for ages. I have doubts, whether they are worth the money ? They look like the a copy of the Yato brand that costs £10. Now I've see the plastic pump mechanism vs brass, they don't install much confidence, I'm probably wrong. It would be good to see them with a heavyweight oil in operation , Also do they siphon the oil if knocked over ? I use iso 68 way oil for my machines, very close to gearbox oil, will these work in cooler conditions like 7 degrees centigrade ?? I would be great full on your thoughts on making the spout tips for ball oilers, shape, taper, etc ?? Cheers Adam, Yorkshire, UK

The Chinese originally produced these oil cans, the top works were die cast metal. The "second value engineered" products are molded plastic. The plastic is pathetic. Why make a cheap product that worked into a cheap product that does not work just to avoid what had to be a tiny price increase? Makes you wonder!

@@Xynudu Has it continued to work? In the US Harbor Freight sells them. A few years ago HF was almost handing them out. I have two of each pattern, two of the die cast, and two of the later plastic bodied oilers. The die cast are still working, although I had to renew the spring behind the ball on one of them. The plastic ones failed about a year after I got them and I have not bothered with them. Trying to be civil here, but I'm not a big fan of plastic. I have a German made "Reilang" with a cast aluminum reservoir that will pump upside down. I was lucky to get a reasonable price on it, I would hate to try to buy a replacement. US made "Goldenrod" are out of business, and I'm not sure about "Eagle". Cheers!
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 5 лет назад
Hi Geoff, I am not a fan of plastic either. I also normally use quality metal oilcans like Rega and have an Eagle 66. But they are no longer made, and second hand is the only solution unless you want to spend big bucks on a Reilang, which I am well aware of. The oil cans in the video are a very cheap alternative for folks that don't want to go down that path. So it's up to them to decide what they want to do. I just presented the video to show what you get. How it performs long term is another aspect outside of the scope of the video. Comments from viewers who have had long term experience with these items is most welcome - it all contributes to the decision making process. Cheers Rob

Hi Dave, Yes most certainly use oil. Are you sure they are grease nipples ? Some oilers on lathes look a bit similar. Someone had fitted grease nipples to my old Schaublin lathe headstock and I switched it back to oil pots, as it should be. Oil ports have a detent ball that you press down with the oil can spout to put in oil. The profile also has to seal the join. Not all oil cans are suitable for this. These cheap ones in the video have the correct profile spout tip and pressure to do the job. Cheers Rob
