On 7 May 2022, I tried my first ever 100-mile race. After a fun and challenging 100km in 2021 (London 2 Brighton), my brother and I decided to see if we could take on and accomplish an ultramarathon of 100 miles.
Knowing that the Centurion Thames Path 100 is a popular and nice entry event for runners taking on such a distance in one go, we signed up.
Unfortunately, at the start of 2022, I sustained a bad injury to my left ankle which left me practically unable to walk, let alone run. Whilst I tried to maintain some fitness by trying to walk with the occasional run throughout late January and February, my ankle only got worse. In March, I did virtually no running whatsoever and very occasionally managed to muster up a walk around the block in the evenings. For a long time, my hopes of competing in this race were gone and I was ready to withdraw. But, at the end of March, my ankle started to improve ever so slowly and by the second week of April I was able to do some light running.
Throughout April, I increased the frequency and volume of running and I was able to start properly training for the race mid-way through the month. My fitness had declined rapidly during the injury downtime and I struggled to recover quickly from training runs. Despite the difficulties, I decided to march on and did whatever training I could throughout April. On race day, I rocked up to the start line with just under 4 weeks of training under my belt despite the fact that most taking on 100 mile races will have done many months of training prior to setting off. I knew that the odds were against me, but I wanted to give it a try.
This video documents the story of how I tried the Thames Path 100 in May 2022.
