So good to watch this, thanks for filming. Had Mozart 100 just prior and am ALSO super sick right now with RTTS in a week, so watching this with our almost identical situation is reassuring! Great video
Monday - 8x800 track intervals 90 second rests (will shorten the rest time gradually) Tuesday - 1 hour easy run Wednesday - 1 hour easy run (4-5 strides at end) Thursday - Rest Friday - tempo 10k (45-50 min) Saturday - 90 minute easy long run Sunday - rest I’m on week 3 doing this training. It’s about 30 miles a week. Did a 5k this week 21:58. Hopefully I can get a sub 20 before end of year. 48 year old male. Personal best 20:10 in 2019
I do have a suggestion to easily get the calories you need and if you absolutely cant eat another bite of food drink olive oil.Highest steps i ever walked in one day was 39,000 steps. My average was 20,000-25,000 a day.Had no intention of doing it and at the time i was having trouble staying asleep at the time and would wake up around 1 am -3 am and would go for a walk.I was eating at that time around 5000 calories and some days i just couldn’t eat anymore so olive oil was a good way to get calories i needed without feeling stuffed
@@runningcafe1 Yup, so much learning for all of us. I had a much slower pace (at a different 100) and finished in 31:39, 20 minutes before the race course closed. Too much stress! Somewhere between your starting pace and mine is where I would like to be.
Looks as if you've been staying there many weeks, is it a training camp or something ? I know there are many of those over there, I'd be curious to get a feedback about them
I was there for a week in April as part of a solo trip. I didn't do any training camps. For trail runners, this is the best place I have come across so far other than Salzburg in Austria and perhaps the Lake/Peak district in the UK. Incredible terrain and really challenging
@@runningcafe1 OK, I've been considering a training camp in the UK in 2025, in order to improve my trail running skills, do tourism and level up my English all together, and I had no idea where the good spots are. So that's a start point, thanks Craig !
Thanks! The terrain was much easier than the terrain in UTS in my opinion. In the Mozart there are a few rocky sections but nothing too crazy, and also some dodgy bits regarding tree routes underneath your feet on some of the climbs but all fine
It depends on what time you want to get, your training, race day nutrition etc. If you are happy with a 1h 55m finish but you want to get faster perhaps try training more and mixing up the training runs e.g., hill sprints, more elevation, intervals, tempo runs
Scafell Pike in the dark is just ludicrous! At the Snowdon summit (never call it "Mount" Snowdon - the locals hate that!) I would have gone past them all and explained you are on the clock for the challenge. I've done that before and everyone is cool with it. You are literally a few seconds and nobody will mind that. Great effort.
Not all of us use miles. Most runners I know measure in km. I imagine it's because we drive with miles per hour speedometers in our cars and all of the road signs are marked by mile distances.
@@runningcafe1 learned something new sir!! I didn't realize Brits use mph when driving. I am in Canada we use kph -- but most treadmills are in mph so thats where I get my mph experience =D
Did you not have a gps route planned on strava, Komoot etc or a compass for Scarfell Pike ?. Its fairly easy with a compass, you just take note of the bearing once walking towards the trig and then reverse the bearing and follow that bearing back the opposite way. Either that or Komoot, Strava etc has an arrow in which direction you are walking, you just point the arrow in the direction of the planned route and walk towards it.
All things that I wish I knew and thought of at the time. Since this video, I've learnt a lot about navigation including compass skills and I now know there are many apps to help. I was just grateful to have made it out in one piece and able to learn my lesson. I hope this video helps others to understand the risks and to take mountains more seriously than I did.
Well done Craig, great video. I was some way behind you 131/164 must admit that I was forever looking down at the timing chip especially through the long grass sections. It was my first Ultra and not to be my last.
Well done mate, it was a really fun day and the weather was great. The long grassy section has got to be one of the dodgiest parts of an ultra I've done before. No idea if I was going to slip to the left or right at a moments notice, and I actually tripped over in a hole at one point and face planted. All part of the fun. Good luck for your future ultras.
Thanks! I just used my Hoka Speedgoat 5s which are my general trail all rounder. They were fine for the race but the muddy section would be a problem for any shoes, unless you wore some with aggressive tread/lugs but I don't think that would have been sensible given the mainly dry conditions.
Top running Craig! I heard great things about the race. Looks like a decent event. Great to finish in the track. That Mike guys a bit of a hunk 🤣 keep the great content coming mate! 😎🤘
Hi Craig I found I believe your chip well before the first aid station ,around just past the Medway bridge section? I forgot to hand it in at the first aid station but handed it into the 2nd one I believe and if it was yours then glad it got to you but if not I hope that person got it 👌 well done on your run and video 🤓👍
You are a legend for handing the chip in, whether it was mine or someone else's! Thank you Frank. Hope you had a good race if you ran it or if you were a volunteer. I literally didn't realise the chip was gone until the race organisers told me. Cheers mate, what you did was very kind.
Nice vid! I am a triathlete so get a lot of fitness from biking and swimming. For people like me, that do other endurance sports concurrently, I recommend focusing on quality runs and not junk miles. A couple of runs, either interval or tempo, with a slightly longer run later in the week, will do the trick. This is because the main limiter, in my case, is not my engine, but rather my leg strength. Another thing I thought I would mention is flexibility and range of motion in hip flexors etc. This is massive in elite runners and something that makes a huge difference in performance. Just look at the stride length and ease of Mo Farah or any other pro.
Thanks Conrad! Hope you've been doing well? Did you do your ultra in the end, have any booked? Haha, the bearded bandit strikes again. Thought I'd try the rugged look for a while, not sure I can pull it off....
@@runningcafe1 I did! London to Brighton 100k last Saturday. Ended up going 105k. Was MILES harder than I expected and took me 16h40 but I did it and was super proud of myself. It was such a long way tho!
Bunch of absolute half wits! Attempting that climb in the pitch black completely unprepared and under skilled! But you got loads of likes and lolz on your social media though and that’s ultimately all that matters eh!
Would you recommend this as the best route for first timers? I did the Snowdon Ranger path last week and loved it. I want to do Scafell Pike next year. Nice scenery is a must, I wouldn’t want to do a route that is not so interesting like the Snowdon Llanberis path. I would appreciate your recommendation. Thank you!
Hey, I've only ever done Scafell Pike via this route so I unfortunately can't comment. I do think that the scenery is lovely and it's a good challenge personally. Good luck!
Just google maps it and you'll be able to find the exact location. It's fairly remote though, mobile phone coverage was non existent for me and I was on Virgin Media
Hi, well done firstly.... im driving from Chesterfield Derbyshire, in a few weeks time im 48 & im wanting to do the 3 peaks but not in 24 hours lol. Anyway how much is the carpark ?
Thank you. The car parks can be busy. Fortunately, there's lots of space at the Llanberris village for Snowdon and I've never struggled to find one. However, I'd recommend getting to Scafell Pike early just in case. Never struggled to find a space at the Ben Nevis visitor centre either. If you do them on weekdays, it's highly likely you'll have a better chance at getting a spot if you go a bit later in the day. Good luck
@@hills_wild_camping There were definitely campervans parked overnight so I'm sure that's fine. I can't remember price wise, from memory I didn't pay but maybe I'm not remembering correctly. Perhaps have a look online.
In hindsight... The use of a mobile phone application like All Trails or OS Maps, an actual map and compass (possibly not the best for at night though), downloading the route onto a GPS watch and following it, following the marked path more diligently (hard in some sections). Lots of lessons learnt the hard way
@runningcafe1 I asked this before attempting three peaks with my 9 year old( over three days). I use OS maps and had horrendous storms at the top of scafell and Snowdon. OS app helped me find my way off scafell when i couldn't see far. Climbing scafell in a storm at night is nuts mate.
