1 month ago i decided i was done with tennis shoes and bought a nice pair of boots. now here i am deep down the rabbit hole watching 45 min cobbler videos.
You and me both. I wore nothing but junk work boots for 30 years and when I found this channel and Rose Anvil I went on binge. Wyatt & Dad are re-crafting a 30 year old made in England Doc's for me. Ive had those since the very early 90's. Add to that some Thursday Vanguards, Some Whites Hathorns and a new set of Whites Millwoods. A decent start.
For a boot guy like myself, (stopped buying cheap throwaway shoes about 20 years ago) this channel is some excellent ASMR for those nights I have trouble falling asleep.
I really thought these were my boots based off the timing & the name lol you’ve done 2 of these now in the same week! Super cool video & UPS says my re craft should be here by Friday. Love watching your videos and can’t wait for my iron rangers to be back on my feet like my Nicks.
At 31:00, is there a reason you attach the leather sole grain-side down? Maybe to make the outsole stick better without having to rough up the flesh-side? I enjoyed your insightful video, by the way. Thanks!
The edging from the welts back were a natural edging. So I wanted the cream side of the sole to be pointing up. If you notice, I sanded everything but those edges. And yes, the fleshy side will bond to the soles better.
This is a cool project and great work, but I can't help wondering if for the cost of buying the Red Wings and then paying for such a comprehensive recraft, he couldn't have almost just bought a pair of Nick's. 🤔
@@rileypatterson7512 no, no. Don’t delete. You aren’t the only one who thought this. It answered more questions for people by reading your comment and this thread. Thanks for your input!
@@WyattDadCobblerCompany yeah that’s a good point but I already deleted it lol. Man, now I kind of want to be a cobbler. As a hobby, you know? That was a cool fucking video, man. Also, good on you for actually replying to your comments. I would try to do that with my pages. But a lot of creators don’t reply.
Truly, the pleasure was all mine. Folks out there.....support your local craftsmen. Time tested and proven quality that's nothing less than a form of art, and a staple of what this country is all about. My hats off to you, Sir. Cheers.....🥃
Just watching how much material can be taken off and still having the boot maintain structural integrity, makes me appreciate how well designed this thing is.
For a regular "old cobbler " guy , like myself, I enjoyed this video and it was nice to hear the word "bespoke". American Cordwainer's should enjoy that. LOL. I enjoy alot of what you do in SRI. It's nice being able to see you work and alter boots . It'd be nice if the person wanting the re-craft were around to see that you got the waist fitted for them to their liking. I've always used dry. Pre -casing welt may help those who like using a wet welt. That way the welt can be semi dry. Btw, guys from India don't use brushes for their gluing. They just use their fingers and dab the glue on. . They do some great work too but, not a re-craft. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VGUbhKSiH3w.html. Anyway, thank you for your interesting re-craft.
No doubt that the result is beautiful, but I have to ask, "Why?" If you want a pair of Nick's, buy a pair of Nick's. Why take a perfectly good pair of Rangers and "transform" them? With the toe cap on, they still look like Iron Rangers anyway.
beautiful design, however, i noticed that the double row stitch on the front of the boot doesnt match. One boot has a bigger gap between the rows. On the right boot, the stitches are almost touching each other and on the left boot there is a noticeable gap. I'd be a bit disappointed if i received those boots back and it looked like that. I'm sure the resole aint cheap
Awesome Wyatt IR custom made boots. The education we get from the masters of the trade are much appreciated. Showing the full process of girdling the waist, looking at it and deciding no, I don't like that and showing how you altered the spacing to make it right is genuine life. ( I'm still waiting on my official copy of the IR/ Falcon conversion process from Red Wing or Nick's.) You went beyond any expectations of ingenuity and skill.
Dang, what a cool project. The beefier base really balances out the bump toe on the IR. Do you know the catalog number on those soles? I can't find it in the 2020 Vibram catalog.
Thanks! That sole is the 427 corded soles. They were discontinued by Vibram a few years ago is why they aren’t in the catalog. We convinced Vibram to make them for us. Our supplier is the only one that has them available for purchase. JH Cook and Sons Inc. is suppliers name.
Very nice work! I also have a pair of 8111's that aren't very old, but I hate the soles they came with. They're vey hard and thin. Perhaps I'll send them to you to have a softer vibram sole put on. I don't really care for the cork in the sole, either, but I don't know if having it removed is an option with the Goodyear welt. I can't imagine how expensive that conversion was! Happy Thanksgiving all!
We have conversions that will accomplish what you are looking for that begin at $140 and go up from there depending if you want additional options. This particular job was $350. As for the cork, it is just a stable filler for the void gimming creates. There are other options to fill that void. Those don’t change the price or anything, just performance. Thanks for watching! Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Great job! You made a good boot into a great boot. Wish Iron Rangers came in my size. Tony and his team turned my 1000 Mile boots from good to great. I get comments on them every time I wear them.
Undoubtably an unusual request, could’ve bought Americanas. I gotta say though I don’t think it could’ve been done any better. I hope the customer was pleased. Interesting technique closing the waist up, it’s clear you know your bootmaking man. I’m curious to see how they break back in though. The leather might develop unusual creasing because it wasn’t designed for this. Something you can’t be held responsible for. I was considering Trenton & Heath for my resole but it’s pretty clear that even if they have a bigger shop and more equipment- you’ve got far more experience and hands on time in the field. I’m really critical about my boots/heritage clothing too, but I’d be confident sending my Vibergs/Red Wings/Daytons etc to you for work. Even your son seems experienced, knowledgeable and calm. You’d taught him well. I tip my hat to you fellas 🎩👌👍😁
Thanks! The customer has kept in contact about the boots. He loves them. The waist hugs his feet like he wanted. The creasing was a concern. I didn’t cover it in the video, but I pulled the corset in certain directions to prevent odd creases from forming. I’ve posted pictures on our Facebook page of him wearing them if you want to check them out.
We offer mail services for this type work. You can purchase the package from our website and ship them directly to Tony. He doesn’t work at the stores. Here is the link for this particular job: wyattanddad.com/products/the-iron-falcon?variant=42510115963061 Thanks!
This is my first time seeing your channel. I am amazed! You're telling me that you took a roughly $350 boot and made it look like a roughly $570 boot? Doing all that handcrafted work? And charging less than it would cost just to buy the Nick's boot? You are severely undercharging for your work.
Sir,those are about the nicest pair of boots I’ve ever seen. I need a pair for myself. Love the red stitching. That is definitely 100 percent custom made craftsmanship. Keep up the quality content I’m hooked now.
It’s been a while. Not sure what camera we were using at the time. I do know that vintage manual lenses were used. Our videographer prefers to be in control.
I find it interesting that the RWIR is so widely loved and so widely re-crafted. Maybe RW should watch all these cobbler videos and design the boots that people want. They love the upper but want a leather midsole sandwiched between the cork and outsole. I’d also say dump the steel shank and go with a leather shank also. Maybe a softer outsole also.
He has Nick’s boots. He likes the last fit of the IR’s in the forefoot and wanted them to be snug in the arch area like the Nick’s. Now he has a pair that no one else has.
Here is the link for that package on our website. I selected the Dr Sole Corded because the Vibram corded is no longer available wyattanddad.com/products/the-iron-logger?variant=43480959877301
So… who ever sent those boots to be resoled like that had to had paid just about the same as the boot cost … I mean that cobbler spent ALOT of time and effort to do that type of artwork lol
Thanks! This is the link to that package on our website. However, the Vibram corded sole is currently only available in sizes 12-14. We have the Dr Sole corded soles though. Email me if you want to see a picture of them wyattndad@gmail.com wyattanddad.com/products/the-iron-falcon
We will be happy to help you with that when you are ready. Here is the link for this job on our website: wyattanddad.com/products/the-iron-falcon Thanks!
I’ve been wanting to install a leather midsole on my Iron Rangers but a friend of mine said that I wouldn’t be able to flex or bend the shoe. True? I’ve always felt this midsole is what the Rangers need to not only make it look more robust but really up the level to match the PNW brands. Thoughts?
@@alanmunoz8961 every customer feedback we get (and that’s a lot) that has added the midsole to the Iron Rangers has raved about how much it improved the boots. Your assumption is correct about it upping the level towards the pnw boots.

I just got my first pair of iron rangers , and I’m wanting some nicks falcons and some Thursdays for beater shoes . I’ve been watching restoration and resoling videos for days on end . After guns , Jiu jitsu , bourbon , watches , clothes , food , and home improvement projects I sure don’t need another hobby but here I am lol
I have a question, how do the nails not pinch while wearing? Are the sharp tips bent inside the shoe? And how does the nail at the hill not pinch? Those nails stay straight as I've seen when he takes the shoe apart. I mean do they dig up their way inside the shoe? I wish i could describe the question a bit better but if someone can explain please do.
The nails are designed to curl at the tip and clinch into the leather so they hold good and don’t stick into the foot. That’s why we use a steel last to drive them into. They look straight when we pull them out because the tip uncurls when we pry on them. That’s why we struggle to get them to break loose. I have already shot the next couple videos that we will publish, but I will cover this subject with a demonstration in the next video we film after those come out.
Why use cork at all? Every boot using cork, the cork has crumbled, especially under the arch/shank area. Not that I could even sew together a two piece leather pouch! LoL
The cork used that crumbles is a hot cork. We use a sheet cork that has had no problems with crumbling for at least the 30 years we have been using it.
@@WyattDadCobblerCompany yess!! that is exactly my experience! i have repaired boots where the leather midsole was allready brittle and cracked while the sheet cork filler still was in mint condition. so many cork opponents online recently. they don't have a clue. it is a great material that offers durability and comfort!
almost every bigger boot company uses hot cork or very cheap sheet cork. good sheet cork is mostly used by cobblers and bootmakers and its very longlasting.
It depends on which package you choose. The average is $170-$180 for new soles with leather midsoles. Check out our website for different options available and prices WyattandDad.com Thanks!
You don't look bad on camera you look like a professional cobbler who knows things should be done the right way the first time. I want you guys to work on my iron rangers once I need to have them resoled. I want a different heel with a better midsole and a little leathwr reinforcement on the shank with a 360 Goodyear storm welt.
We haven’t gotten it listed yet. You can purchase the Iron Logger package and we will make the adjustments during the consultation call, or you can just ship them in with contact information in the package and we will invoice you once we have the consultation call. Thanks!
Nicks boots has videos on how they make their boots. They use nails to secure the upper in the center and rear of the boot. I guess if you don’t have the original last it’s much harder to do that
Correct. These boots had already had that area of leather trimmed off. I didn’t want to nail near the edges and risk it tearing loose. The stitching was an insurance policy.
I am not understanding properly how it was done. Don’t those nails damage the inside of the shoes on the lower portion? Or it’s going into the stitching?
