Happy Birthday, my friend! I didn't consider any birthday ending in a zero as a "milestone" until the first digit was a "7". I love the shots in 4x5 - their look is distinctive, and you have brought a consistent posing style. Andy in the US
Every year. Not necessarily 4x5 every year, but I think it would be super cool to get a shot of all your friends each year. At the end of 10 years, you would basically have a book. In fact, this sounds like an excellent long-term photo project. But you may need to limit how many friends you invite to your parties... Regarding turning 30: just wait til you turn 50. Woohoo.
Not sure if this project would be interesting to anybody else than my friends and me - but it sounds like a lovely long-term project indeed! Now I feel like I should have started with this 10 years ago already haha. Thanks for your comment :)
Happy birthday, Karin. Even at twice your age, you wouldn't be (or need to think yourself) old. Away with such prejudices! (This from someone much much older.) As for the lighting: a reflector might improve things, lifting the shadows and balancing the highlights. The lamp you have >should< emit enough light to shoot Fomapan 100 at a speed of 1/125 s and an aperture of f/8 or f/11, thus increasing depth of field. All the same, the photos you took were pretty good, given the difficulties. Don't wait until you're 40. Make this an annual event. With cake if not candles.
Away with the prejudice about age is a lovely perceptive, I appreciate it! I actually like the harsh contrast but a reflector might have helped indeed. Oh and yes, the light was far from emitting enough brightness for those settings haha. But that tipped me over the edge to upgrade my light equipment, hope the next photo session will be easier that way!
Thanks so much for your comment Kevin, I appreciate it a lot! :) It truly was the most perfect birthday, I am also super happy that everybody had a good time!
Such a wholesome birthday party! Shooting large format wide open is a challenging task, and I think you did great job. Looking forward to seeing more of your home studio experiments.
Thanks Bartek, I appreciate it! Actually, this experience motivated me to level up my lighting gear... and I am already working on the next studio type experiments. :)
Wow such a wholesome way to celebrate your 30th!🥹✨ Concerning the conclusion of your‘s: I actually really like the serial character of the set, because I always viewed this as a set of photographs not single ones☺️ P.S. I think I might have to steal your party-shoot idea🤭
Thank you Teo, I appreciate it! Thank you for sharing your thoughts - now, with a couple of days of distance to the video I also like the coherence of the set more. :)
Yes practice makes a professional. To my experience (until now) mixing technics (analoque and digital) is not positive for the outcome. Yes when you do not shoot a lot of large format there always will be a risk of failure. Specially when you have to focus at close distance. People always move, and a focus depth of nearly 5 cm (I estimate) is difficult.
I think it's all a matter of preference. For me the combination of both was perfect and I love how different the outcome is: the large format portraits feel more "serious" and "deep" while the digital images are more loose and fun. But luckily we are not all the same and everybody can choose which approach works for them. :)
What a great way to spend a birthday. Happy Birthday and all the best for the year ahead. Good friends will make the year ahead all the more special. And a belated congratulations on the wedding.
Happy birthday Karin! All of your friends are very cool :) I am definitely jealous being 46 myself. I started photography only 10 years back with a phone and now film from last 3 years. You have a long amazing journey ahead 🎉
Thanks so much, I appreciate it! :) It's never too late to pick up a new hobby that might even transform into a passion! Great you found your way into (film) photography ☺️
Happy birthday! That sounds like such a fun idea for a party, and the shots turned out SO WELL ! I'm definitely keeping that one in my back pocket for this upcoming year when I turn 40. :D
This is so great. I had been thinking on an upcoming major birthday (45 is next year!) of asking people to gift me their time to take their portraits, so it's awesome to see an example of how it can go. I don't think I'm daring enough to rent large format gear for it, but I would totally use my Pentax 67. :)
What a wonderful idea as well, I love the framing of "gifting time" as a birthday present. Hope you will come around to do it next year! The 67 negatives have plenty of information too and I bet many people have never had their portrait taken with a medium format camera of that caliber. So probably a pretty cool experience as well! :)
Alles Liebe und Gute zum 30. Geburtstag !
Danke! ☺️
Great idea👍 I love your videos with this camera🎞️! Great portraits🔥! My favorite is #8 (as a photo, not as a person, beautiful woman (other models are beautiful too!), a beautiful portrait, a beautiful light!) Thanks🙏! Good luck to you✌️!
@@KarinMajoka I love the portraits of the photographer Moses Solomonowitsch Nappelbaum. One light source in the dark. Artistic background. I should try to take pictures of the guests for the holiday as well, it's a really interesting idea☺!)
Alles gute Nachträglich! 🎉🥳 I guess nr 1 is your man. Because he has no choice other than being photographed. I hoped that Momo also would appear as a model when i saw the title of the video.
Vielen Dank! :) good combination skills indeed, but not the correct answer. ;) Momo had some guest appearances in the studio but sadly she was not patient enough to sit for a 4x5 portrait haha.
@@KarinMajoka "Niet geschoten is altijd mis" as we say in Dutch 😆 I spotted MOMO, but I think she needs much more screentime. She's way cooler than Baxter. I dipped my toes in portrait photography as well, I did a workshop at Khrome last month. I didn't find it that easy...
Happy birthday! I also felt like 30 was the tipping point, but 12 years later, I don't feel that way any more :) Tough to choose but I prefer #7 of Sabrina, maybe because the expression feels a little more natural. Great idea for a party and a video. Take care!
Well, I think it is rather easy - number 13 is the lucky one. Actually, there are two very visible hints: She wears her very German Hausschuhe and is really familiar with the cat. Plus it is not the first time she appeares in your videos.
Ding ding ding - that's the correct answer! Very good combination skills you have there, I also thought it might be obvious and more people would guess it but you are the first and only one so far.
Super interesting video and beautiful portraits dear Karin! Oh, and happy birthday!!! I had similar feelings on my 30th birthday - but after that day you simply stop caring about your age ;-)
Thanks Ollie, I appreciate it! :) So far I am still in the denial phase about the age, hopefully the acceptance phase won't take too long to follow haha.
Hi, just a curiosity, are shots generally underexposed? Looking at the negatives in the video they looked in that way. Furthermore, why did you have dust on them? Was during the loading of the holders? Btw, happy birthday!
Happy Birthday Karin. Don't worry 30 is the new 20, so you can now legitimately remove 10 years from every subsequent birthday. I'm looking forward to what you do for your 21st! Great idea for a birthday party though, I might steal the idea for my 44th in a few weeks.....yes, I still remove 10....but age is more than just a number!
Thank you, I appreciate it! That is pretty encouraging to hear to be honest and a pretty relieving perspective. Have fun recreating this birthday party idea for your 34th (😉) then, hope your friends are down to join! :)
For me the big one was 33. I'm not sure why but somehow it seemed so old and dare I say it an adult. This year was birthday 71 and believe me that was old and now I even actually feel old with all that means and the occasional grumpiness. Happy Birthday
I feel like round birthdays are usually the ones that worry people, interesting to hear it was the 33 for you. Haha, don't we all know that occasional grumpiness? 😬 Thanks for your comment!
Married to: could be 8.(she doesn't look at you 😊), 10.(in some way look similar), and 11. look exactly like person who is photographed by his spouse. So, that was my social skills at large.... P.S. shot at 1/15 show that that film work better at ISO 50 or maybe even little lower.
Really interesting reasoning! But the correct person was not amongst your guesses yet. ;) Yes, I agree, overall all the shots might have benefited from a stop of more light. Time for a new, more powerful lighting setup I guess...
Vielen Erfolg 😉
@@KarinMajokait's ok to print from a digital scan, I promise! Although I do know a guy here in the NYC area that "prints" negatives for enlargement, it's wild, maybe I'll put up a video of his operation.
Those shoots look super thin, what developer were you using? I've had better results with xtol/xt3 than most but I do think foma is a bit, ahem, generous with the ratings they give their film.
I think they would have enjoyed an extra stop of light, that is true. But the video camera also made them look thinner than they are. I used Rodinal because I was out of XTOL which is my usual developer of choice. :)
You already worry to become 30 ??? That is still sooooo young. I will reach 60 next year and still feel as young as I was in your age. 😁 Happy birthday !!! 🥳
You still have you best years ahead, 30/45 are awesome, all the advantages of being both still young and mature ;) Turning 50 is when things get more tricky...Happy birthday ;)
Oh my got, happy birthday my sussie! 30th anniversary is not scary, your life is just beginning Wish u all the best ans hope one day we will meet in person
