When he healed Melinda, she mentioned that they "found each other in the dark." John Coffey was afraid of the dark, but willingly went into the dark to heal her (and probably every other time he healed).

I am a 48 year old man's man. Even I cry watching this movie, I cry every time. This is possibly the best movie ever created.

That was the cutest and most genuine reaction to the "supernatural" turn of this movie.

My theory is that when Coffey gave Percy the tumour, he also passed on the vision of what Wild Bill did. Percy cries a single tear before executing Bill. Just my take on it though, no proof. EDIT: Oop, just looked it up. John's essence was acting through Percy to execute him, which was why Percy was crying. Also, John could have cured Percy after, but he didn't, as, in the book, he says 'He killed Del's mouse."(moreso that John knew that Percy meant to make Del suffer and took revenge in his own way.)

The end speech that Paul gave about all of us walking our own Green Mile…gets me every time. I just connect with it every time. This movie is so beautiful but tragic at the same time

Percy and Wild Bill are two of the greatest antagonists I've ever seen. Absolutely superb acting. And some things don't need to be explained; learn to enjoy the mystery.

Harry Dean Stanton's character is a trusty, a prisoner trusted to perform chores, not a death row inmate. The rehearsal he helped with was to ensure no errors on the part of the people performing the execution. He is also in "Alien," and "The Avengers."

This was adapted from a Steven King book, that should tell you a lot. Michael Clark Duncan was 6' 5" tall. He passed away at the age of 54. Nothing hurts like a charged 2 1/2 inch fire hose. He deserved what he got.

As a guy with Spina Bifida, I can confirm that Tom Hanks gives the best depiction of a urine infection I have ever seen in a movie. It doesn't just hurt where you think it does. It hurts everywhere. The pain is unreal and you feel like you have to go constantly. You can barely walk and you're literally crawling on the floor to the bathroom and there's no relief. The doctor always wants me to get a sample, but trust me - good luck with that, unless you have a specimen bottle and a friend willing to take it to the lab. You think you know pain, until you've had a UTI. And if you're susceptible to it like I am, you're always taking extra precautions. Even before COVID, I was washing my hands all the time and using sanitizer. If you've never had the pleasure of one, appreciate it, because it's horrendous. You're praying a big, soft spoken guy grabs you by the crotch no matter what way you swing so they can fix it.

The guy who played Del was a brilliant actor as well as some of the others. He passed away a few years after this movie and his name was Michael Jeter

The reason why he thinks of it as a curse at the end is because with him living so long, he outlives all his loved ones and sees them all die. To be honest, even though I’ve seen it maybe a dozen times, I never really liked this movie. But reading the book gave me a greater appreciation for it though.

John always referred to what he did as "I took it back." In reference to the two girls, when they found him, he said, "I tried to take it back, but it was too late." Great reaction.

When you say “I want more” after a 3 hour film… it was done right. What a masterpiece of cinema. I’ve seen movies under 2 hours that felt too long. This movie is incredible.

As a person who has worked in multiple nursing homes, the “peace” of the old is a myth. Especially in that setting because they’ve been taken from their home and put with a bunch of strangers. They’ve got regrets, worries, fears, hopes and dreams like anyone else. Even if you’ve lived a whole life, you often want more time. Or you want death.

Hey, MJ. I just have to tell you, I've been watching your YT channel for the last few months from '23. Just LOVE your face... your smile... your laughter an all, you know? Anyway THIS is the first time seeing you almost break down in tears.Well, it just broke my heart and I started crying. I've always been this way as afar back as I can recall. Alwaysenpathetic towards anyone or anything experiencing pain/suffering. Growing up I'd always thought there was spomething wrong with me. Like, maybe I was a bit on the crazy side of the road or something. It took me YEARS to come to the realization that I'm just a highly empathetic dude (I'm 65 now, soon to be 66). Anyway I don't know how or why your becoming emotionally shaken effected me as it did. Anyway you probably won't even read (or respond) to this. So I'll stop here. You strike me as being someone who isgenuine. At least I think so. Maybe that's why it hit me so hard when you about broke out in tears? Maybe.

A past commenter pointed out that John allowed those parents to continue to believe that he killed their daughters to spare them the guilt and pain of knowing that they allowed the real killer, Wild Bill, into their house and family.

The dry sponge scene is one of the hardest things to watch in a non-horror film.

The reason they yell "Dead Man Walking"... is a required warning to the other prisoners around. The guards are warning everyone a man who has nothing to live for will kill anyone because what worse could happen to them... best to stay away. Also, the reason people view executions to this day can be two-fold. Sometimes it is required that the convicting jury must attend so they understand the severity of what they did convicting the person of being guilty, and it brings closure to the families, finally, there needs to be witnesses that the person is really killed.

Youre not a baby for crying to this moviem Im a 41 year old, military veteran and this movie makes me tear up. All of it is really profound. The fundamental and absolute injustice and the genuine lobe and respect they all had for him in the end. These are good men, men all boys should aspire to become.

That botched execution is pure Stephen King horror. The acting, cinematography, and music was amazing.

This movie is somewhat based on a real story: a 14 year old kid named George Stinney was falsely accused of a similar crime and was the first minor to be executed, and they later found out that he was innocent. They used a big man like Michael Clarke Duncan (R.I.P.) to represent how racist America views black men even though the real kid George Stinney was a small kid. He was executed in the electric chair in the 1940s and just got an official pardon in recent years…like that really made up for what they did to him.

Classic, beautiful movie. They dont make them like this anymore. Rip to Michael Clark Duncan.

I believe in my heart of hearts that when Paul says during John's execution, "May god have mercy on your soul," he was really speaking to himself there.

When JC "takes it back" he is literally changing reality, destiny. He is that powerful.

While telling the parents who actually violated and killed their girls might have helped John. But to tell them who actually did it was the man they brought into their home would destroy the parents forever. The guilt that they would live with for the rest of their lives.

One of the things Frank Darabont did to improve Stephen King's brilliant writing in both "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption" is that he refused to tell us what the inmates had done. He wanted us to see them as humans, not as criminals defined by their actions.

I love this movie, but my dad was kidnapped by a meth addict and murdered so I have a hard time accepting that ALL prisoners are just victoms. So it makes this kind of thing hard to accept.

Great reaction, MJ. I'm 25 years familiar with the book and movie. First, if you pay attention, there are times when the guards on E Block , as well as Hal, do things that don't make sense. Like Paul going closer to John's cell. One of Persy's many shortcomings was his inability to remember to walk in the center of the corridor between the cells, which is why he gets grabbed a couple of times. That's why Del knows to caution Paul about getting too close to John. Paul does it anyway. When they take John to heal Melinda Hal greets them armed and agitated, but John just gently takes the shotgun away from him. The next moment, Hal is shouting again. John tells him to be still and quiet. Hal stops yelling. That's because John is always obeyed. He's just so soft spoken and patient it's easy to miss. If he'd wanted a different outcome he probably could've left the jail as soon as he calmed down after he was arrested. When John gave Persey the illness, the other guards just let him walk away, even though its obvious he's almost catatonic, and don't follow him until after he's shot Billy. It's a wonderful adaptation but the book is better. It reads a bit differently than Steven King's other stories. As it was first published in serial form in a magazine. This used to be a regular occurrence, but King tried it because, apart from the novelty in modern publishing, he wanted to challenge himself to write the beginning of each chapter in such a way so readers who'd missed the previous chapters could still understand most of the plot. And he very much successeds. 🧓🎭💖

"If he could make a mouse live so long, how much longer do I have?" A Stephen King movie ends with a fittingly truly horrifying thought. Mr Jingles lived about 30 times the normal lifespan of a mouse, and is still going. Imagine how long Paul might be forced to keep living, especially since he keeps physically aging. Absolutely terrifying.

Michael Clarke Duncan deserved an Oscar for his role in this movie.

I’m 32 now. But I remember watching this when I was in high school and had a friend who basically was one of those kids that would laugh over anything. She was a hoot. 🤭 Anyway. I think one day after school she came to my house. We went in to my room to watch this together. The bit where John holds Paul’s groin to heal him came on. And when del said “boss. What that man do to you?” Came on. She was in hysterical laughter at how his voice sounded as he said it. I’ll never forget that 😂
