I agree, but you gotta admit, that was a tough year for that category. You had Duncan, Tom Cruise (Magnolia), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) and Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley). To be honest, I'm still stumped that Michael Caine won for The Cider House Rules; for me, as good as he was, he ranks fifth in that year's Best Supporting Actor category.

In case nobody pointed it out yet..it was the Great Depression and the guards were very lucky to be employed. That’s why Percy threatened Brutal with being on the bread lines (where people would wait for bread because they couldn’t afford to eat). It was also uncommon to take off work to go to the doctor when jobs were so scarce.

The humanity and its extreme polar opposite with Percy and Billy was crazy. Del's death started my downhill slide and John's death destroyed me. The loss of Michael Clark Duncan was truly terrible. There is a lot of religious symbolism throughout the film. The cathedral-like windows over the guards desk and the halo of light from the movie projector around John's head. John also takes on Del's pain during the execution. I read the Stephen King novel before the film. The backstory of the death-row prisoners is in the book.

Another thing that I find Jesus-like is when Paul asks John "what am I going to say to God on judgment Day when I stands before HIM and God asks ,"why did you kill one of my true miracles?" And John Coffey answers "you tell God the Father it was a kindness that you done"! As far as I know Jesus referred to God as God the Father all the time in biblical writings! So John Coffey using that phrase in reference to God is also a clue that he could be Jesus HIMSELF! Also an angel would not have the power to pass a judgment of death on to humans! So John Coffey using Percy to kill wild Bill and then making Percy mentally incompetent is not something an angel would have the power to do! Just my opinion but seems viable!

And its not because of " racism " it's because THEY COMMIT FREAKING CRIMES.

Because many of Stephen King's stories coexist in a shared multiverse connected by the Dark Tower series, it seems to be implied that John Coffey had the shine, like Danny Torrance from The Shining. Of course, that's just one interpretation.
@j.woodbury412

I think many times, if you read a Stephen King novel, it will mention characters from other novels, like they're all somehow connected.
@bobblebardsley
@bobblebardsley 7 месяцев назад
I think it's so clever how this movie is so 'realistic' in terms of dialog, how long it takes before anything supernatural happens, and how the characters react to that - it's clear they live in a universe where that stuff is NOT normal, which is something a lot of movies fail to portray. It all adds up to make the John Coffey stuff so much more hard-hitting but also doesn't diminish from the normal human interactions of Percy, Del and everyone else. I don't necessarily love 100% of everything Stephen King does but this is such a perfect balance between all those elements.

That's a movie that makes you cry about literal murderers. None of them, except for John, were good people. None of them denied it, and they knew they deserved what was coming for them. Strange thing, when you can feel sorry for the worst people, depending on the point of view. Also, Paul described the reality of what many people want: immortality, or at least a very long life. It's a curse, something a human isn't made for. You won't enjoy it, but feel the passing of the years, of the people, until you either go insane, or so hurt that no one can ever reach you.

Most of the prisoners are human beings capable of empathy and humanity. They did something impulsive and stupid and they're paying for it, but they're not complete monsters. They have depth and nuance and emotional complexity. Wild Bill and Percy are mean and cruel through and through. Probably never said a nice word to anyone they couldn't use for their own gain. Percy's a textbook bully, using his connections and perceived power to get what he wants and face no consequences. Wild Bill is probably some kind of sociopath with the emotional depth of a mud puddle. All he wants is to hurt people for his amusement, but if he's going down, he's going to take as many people as he possibly can with him. Del and Bitterbuck could have ended up somewhere else if they made better choices, but people like Percy and Wild Bill don't change, they only stop when they get caught.

The fact that the girls _Green Mile_ reaction went from 1k-3k views in the first hour to 26k+ views 16 hours later is very impressive considering their previous reactions following _Ready Player One_ and prior to _Shawshank Redemption_ (The Blade Runner films, The Prestige, The Adam Project) only went to 14k-20k and/or 30k views 2-4 weeks later whereas their Shawshank Redemption (until it was taken down) and their _Green Mile_ reaction the viewership skyrocketed, in fact it’s the first time since their _Alien_ films reactions, and their reaction to _The Terminator_ and _Predator_ respectively that I seen a film reaction done by Hailey and Stella get so much attention and viewership (25k+ in less than 24 hours). I guess folks just like films that are extremely good or are considering Eye-protein to enjoy such as the Alien, Predator and Terminator (mainly original and T2) franchises. It Wouldn’t surprise me that the Girls Green Mile could get to 50k-100k before the end of this month or within less than 24-48 hours.

Ladies Hayley is actually correct about John Coffey if he is acting like other JC. During an interview, host asked Stephen King, "Is John Coffey reference to other JC?" King replied, "yes" Remember that Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross even Pontius Pilat washed his hands of the execution. Paul (Hanks) wanted John somehow to escape his execution, but John stopped him from doing it. John wanted to end his time after facing trauma. Before he left his time, John gave him the "gift" or "curse" for atonement of letting God's gift be executed.

Also since Stella had mentioned back in their _Shawshank Redemption_ reaction on reacting to serious, dramatic and Oscar-winning movies I recommend that both her along with Hailey will react to the following films (outside the Dramatic and Prison-themed films) following _Good Will Hunting:_ _Schindler’s List, Apollo 13, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Pan’s Labyrinth, Silence of the Lambs, ET, The Goonies, Hook, Gremlins_ (for December as its a Christmas movie), _Labyrinth, The NeverEnding Story, Breakfast Club,_ and _Stand by Me_ I especially recommend the latter film, _Stand by Me_ and the films starring Tom Hanks (Apollo 13, Forrest Gump) considering the former like _Shawshank_ and _Green Mile,_ _Stand By Me_ was another Stephen King adaptation based on a coming of age story/novella, so highly recommend you give this film a watch and as Tom Hanks was in _Green Mile_ I wouldn’t mind you at least watch _Forrest Gump_ and _Apollo 13._

If you heard an officer yelling "Dead Man Walking," you shut up and turned to face the wall until they went by with that inmate. I never actually read the book(s) because they released it as these really short minibooks that I didn't have the patience for, then never read the compilation. If it is faithful, Stephen King is always strong on character development. If his book falls apart in the 3rd act with a random spider monster, you'll still be attached to the characters. Stephen King had said in "On Writing" that John Coffey has the initials J.C. for a reason. Earliest Sam Rockwell role I can think of is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I love how everything is natural and realistic, how they portrayed the days in the Green Mile as ordinary and how familiar is the relationship among the cops, it enhances the fantasy element making John even more out of this world, a real miracle. Also loved the way you can feel empathy for inmates that probably did something horrible, but they let us see the other side of them, like the first guy being executed remembering his lover, or Del being extremely naive. These characters are so real.

The empathy is one of the parts that always stuck with me. Everyone has a story. Whether or not you choose to learn that story is up to you, but don't pass judgment without learning it first. The law has to be impartial in order to work, so it can learn the stories. Because of that, we need to learn them, otherwise when the law makes mistakes, whatever the reason, those mistakes may never be discovered, or discovered far too late.

Yes, ladies, John Coffey is a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus. (Recall the scene where John is watching his first-ever flicker show, and the light from the movie projector is illuminating his head from behind, just like a halo: The Christian symbolism is unmistakable.)

Everybody who watches this movie cries. It’s one of the greatest movies ever made. If the life extension is proportional to normal lifespan, giving how long the mouse has lived, Paul will probably live for another thousand years.

The one thing I wish was explained better in the movie, just for character development; Paul was allergic to Sulfa, the only commonly available antibiotic at the time, so he knew there wasn’t much the doctor could do for him, that’s why he was so adamant on not going to the doctor.

Hi Ladies!😊 This is one of my favorite dramas. I've never watched this one without crying.😭 Almost everyone is surprised at the supernatural twist the story takes. There are three films based of the writings of Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead). Two have been reacted to here: This film and "The Shawshank Redemption". The third film, which feels most like a King story is "The Mist" (2007). It is a very unusual horror film. Great reactions to this wonderful tear jerker film, Ladies!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

16:30 "You have to do it until dead" - A particularly nasty problem with the history of the electric chair is that people of the time had a profound misunderstanding of the effect of electricity on the body. They thought that death occurred because electric shock destroyed the brain, hence the need to attach an electrode to the head and dump an enormous amount of current. The reality was that it only takes a small amount of electricity directly to the heart for a few milliseconds to kill, in much the same ironic way that a defibrillator works to revive.

Unfortunately, it turns out Percy's actor wasn't acting. He was just being himself. Doug Hutchison, at 51 years old, married a 16 year old girl. In her own words after ending the 'relationship', she said it felt more like a conservatorship. EDIT: Also, I have no idea how the story this is based on explains it, but I always figured John showed Percy what Wild Bill did to the girls. And Percy killed Bill for it. You can see a single tear roll down his cheek before he pulls his sidearm and fires.

I always felt that John Coffey was in control, and Percy was just “along for the ride” at that point, so it was John causing the tears. Doubtful that Percy would care, even if it was the rape and murder of two young girls. Percy was scum.

"Normal people talking like normal people do." Stephan King isn't where he is because of the horror, (Well, it is that too). He writes the most relatable, believable characters I've ever absorbed. I moved 12 times as a youth and went to twelve different schools growing up. I always made friends with the librarians and I always had a friend in a book. Stephen King's characterizations are uncanny!

Don't feel bad about crying, I've seen this movie numerous times and it still makes me cry and I cry it again Tonight while watching it with you. I have always been a sensitive man, I sincerely care about others as much as I care about myself. But after my experience with covid 3 years ago, my near death experience, I'm much more sensitive than I even used to be before. I remember waking up after spending 16 days on a ventilator, the first thing I remember seeing on TV was the fuel error explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. Lebanon. The trimmers from that were felt 350 mi away in cypress. At first I thought it was terrorism, it ended up just being ignorance and incompetence. Nobody wanted to pay to clean up the mess, and then it exploded. Killing lots of people for no reason at all. I remember balling my eyes out thinking I just fought so hard to survive after being given a 1% chance of survival. And I woke to this? I was inconsolable. That was harsh, movies like this. Remind us of how harsh the world actually is. I would be more troubled if you weren't moved to tears. I no longer am embarrassed by being so sensitive, I realize it is one of the things that makes me special. The same is true for both of you.
