And it looks like the fine was from 2015 for some other matter. “All” that came of this was getting his registration cancelled for 6 years

What's even more scary is the owners might not even catch these mistakes and think it's normal then 15 20yrs later when these issues finally rear their ugly heads will the owners find out how shit of a job the builders did which means they lose their entire investment and spend 10s or even 100s of thousands of dollars trying to fix the issues that shouldn't have been prevalent since day dot

I used to do work for builders in the 90s and most of the good ones got out then because they couldn't compete with cheap large volume builders, it's really funny when you service their vehicles because all really bad ones carried weapons in their cars.

What's the surveyors got to do with this! They likely just put the boundary pegs in and gave the builder 4 corners for the building location inside the lot and a finished floor level datum mark.

No, I was suggesting illegal DIY, as the system is broken anyway, and often you builder will sub contract to unlicensed to save money anyway. There is no accountability. If you know tradie mates that can show you how to diy. Save a fortune.

@bjtaudio that's unfortunately not a realistic option to most. An alternative is hiring a third party building certifier to do inspections at each stage, in particular the foundation build

@@bjtaudio It's not like I couldn't do the work. I'm an aircraft engineer, I'd build everything to within a thousandth of an inch! It's more the fact that I'd expect the council to come along and say.... "no building license? This all need to be torn down!"

have you ever actucally been into the guts of these buildings? you are looking at something thats been upgraded and maintained since construction.. The civic buildings have a bit more to them, but anything residential was built as fast and as cheap as possible.

This is untrue now. Not only are buildings unattractive and without ornamentation, builders and inspectors can not be trusted. Something changed societally.

It's called survivor bias. The 100 year old buildings we see today are the ones that lasted 100 years (obviously). They also built a lot of crap (like we do today) but they didn't last. The ones that lasted were the ones that got lucky and got maintenance.

Yes there are always rogue builders but take a look at the mouldings, the stonemasonry, the ornate cast iron, natural bluestone, hardwood finishes. We use a lot of engineered products today, which should realistically economise on the build. It seems to have had the reverse affect on quality. Low building quality is escalating.

@@Samsgarden I served my apprenticeship in the UK,carried out an awful lot of heritage and ecclesiastical work so I have a bit of experience. Obviously we don't have the industry and poorly paid workforce to work on that scale and detail these days. But mainly you are comparing apple's to oranges, a row of victorian era terraces compared to modern townhouses are worlds apart. I agree that modern standards are terrible, but so much more goes into a modern building these days. I'm sure a builder could knock you up something cheap if your plumbing was a Belfast sink and outdoor shitter.

ESL teacher here, part of the problem (I think) is that the industry is dependent of foreign labour. Foreign labour itself is not the issue; it's the fact these people working are political campaign managers, doctors, accountants - whatever. They can't legally work FT jobs that require citizenship or a comprehensive VISA, so they can only get work in construction and service jobs mostly

Generally his report is passed on to the owners solicitor and over the next few years the builder will let the owner bleed out with legal costs trying to get a fix. Fair Trading is a toothless tiger.

I had my home inspected by SiteInspections. Quite a few defects and non compliant items found. There was a major issue with a water leak which would have been undetected without them. As for the process. After the inspection you get the report, then it's going to come down to how your contract is structured as to what action you can take. For us we had the builder repair the leak, a lot of the defects were minor and for us not worth the hassle. Home owners who have this level of issues should first look at their legal options but then also provide videos like this to their government representatives and be very persistent in asking 'what actions are being taken to make builders and surveyors accountable for their builds, and what protections are being strengthened' ask for specifics, details, not buzz words and fluff. With enough noise change may come

same I would like to know how the home owners get on with the reports and what if anything the builders do and what if anything can be done to get them to fix all the breaches in the standards. Think "revisit" episodes would be great

I work in the construction industry in WA and there are bad builders and trades here too. Gee I've seen dodgy stuff and I'm not even an inspector knowing what to look for.

Great idea BUT Developers allocate lots to favored builders only. The public is not invited. You might consider buying a 'not so great' shape house-NOT A GROW HOUSE- and fix it yourself. This way, you avoid all the red tape, the meatball subs AND the neighbors will love you for cleaning up the eye sore. Just a thought.
