Many of you ask me for name of the songs I use in my videos. All songs are from Epidemic sounds. They are from Sweden and I love them.
I will soon publish a list of songs I use. Also, I use a lot of sound effects If you listen closely. They are also from here! You can actually try them for free for 30 days. I have found no service even close to them and most youtubers use them for that reason. This is an affiliate link so this is the best day ever for you, me and them if you try it!

Yeah, I think part of it is also figuring out what actually it is good at -- it seems clear that a lot of normal guitar techniques won't work as well on horse hair, but are there any tones that are interesting? It seems to me the lower strings are particularly dead, so maybe we have to try something more percussive if we're playing down there. Also, was there a lot of experimentation done to determine where the "sweet spot" of each string by gauge is? Maybe a different tuning would help bring out the strings at their best tone. Maybe even just getting rid of the low strings and playing it as a different instrument would help. Lots of various ways to experiment here. The sustain is clearly going to be deadened compared with a steel or nylon string, and the tone lacks brightness. Is there anything you can also coat them in as another possibility?

@Dallen3000 - I couldn't figure out why he was opposed to using a shorter guitar. Horses like the tall Andalusian have longer tails. It would've had a different sound with a complete strands. He could contact the Andalusian Horse club. Or, the Lippizan horse club... Joining strands don't allow for a solid path for vibration to follow. It would be equivalent to a bad wiring setup on an amplifier. If wires are frayed there's impedance.

I know those strings didn’t sound great, but another thing to take into consideration is that it is a steel string acoustic guitar and the top is heavy and requires a lot of energy to drive the top, hence why they use steel strings. If you were to use nylon in a steel string, it also wouldn’t have enough energy to drive the top. Because many classical guitars once used gut strings and eventually players switched to nylon, it may be possible that the strings have enough energy to drive the top of a classical guitar. I know you said it wasn’t worth it, but if you still have the strings and didn’t cut them, maybe it’s possible to test the experiment on a classical guitar.

There is an old instrument in scandinavia called Stråkharpa in Swedish (Talharpa in Norwegian). It uses horse tail hairs (hence the name in norwegian). As you can tell from the swedish name, it is also "stroked".... with a bow, to be clear. A bow much like that of the nyckelharpa.

No kidding, though, the motivation advice is so true. Everytime I have to practice, I have no motivation, but once I start, I get motivated and I can easily practice two hours. The hard part is just starting. 🙃
@Mattiaskrantz

it works for pretty much everything. I think it’s interesting how you could ”find” motivation in the most uninteresting things by doing this. I only work in 25 minute sessions because the starting part gets a lot easier I think!🤝

Interesting. That's how we (some builders at least) sometimes make strings for Tagelharpas/Jouhikkos (black and white strings are a visual indicator for the twist). To make them better: soak the hair in warm water for about 20min --> twist them flemishly ;) --> apply to your instrument --> let dry. Horse hair has the tendency to stretch. Ideally it needs to stretch out to it's "working" form/length. Nylon and metal strings, gut, etc... also need time to fit/sit perfectly. Hair needs this time even more so. When you soak them --> they are "sort of" stretched. They will decrease in length and diameter in the process of drying and stretch under their own tension. So be careful not to tune them to their destined voice as this might be way too much tension. This will result in an almost (!) already perfectly stretched string and gives a clearer sound. I know I'm very late to the party, but maybe someone wants to try this out, or you want to do this again.
@almishti

Dude, I would make of every version you do, either it is the guitar with horse hair or under water Piano and so on, a virtual instrument, like you did with the hammer on paino strings. Even if some dont sound really good as a instrument alone, many producers like for hip hop and electronic muic look always for unusual sounds. It would be basically a additional income source! 👍

I’m currently using the 3 high strings from a 5-string cello set on my instruments. The high E is pretty expensive by itself so I decided to build a couple with standard viola strings and they turned out pretty cool and much more affordable. But I really like to have a VSL of 20-22 inches, which is too long for the viola strings. I’m now on a quest to find similar strings with the scale length I desire for a reasonable price (under $20 for a set). But I’m currently not aware of any common instruments that use these strings.
