I used Windows 8.1 in 2024 ~ People misunderstood this OS...

Windows 8.1 had a rather poor reputation when it released, just like Windows 8. I don't think it deserved all of that. But well anyways, it's unsupported, but that's not stopping me from using it today!
Anyways, Windows 8.1 was released in 2013 as an update to Windows 8 (released in 2012). There are differences, so as a result, I'm mentioning 8.1 specifically to avoid confusion with the original 2012 release. Both versions succeeded the beloved and popular Windows 7 (released in 2009), but 8.1 was not very successful. Windows 10 would try to fix this, but honestly, the damage was done. Windows would and will never be the same, nowadays sporting "apps", and lots of bloated features (not just programs, but Windows 11 is also bloated with AI features and people do not like it), and generally a shell of its history (which is why 1994-2011 was generally a golden age for Microsoft Windows in my opinion).
But, nonetheless, I had a different experience with 8.1, as it was installed on my first computer, an Asus Transformer Book T100 two-in-one computer. I always though it was really cool, despite what I heard about it, and even tried to install it on the family computer, to which my parents said "NO!", which was ironic as said family computer got upgraded to Windows 10, which it handled terribly. But anyways, as initially stated, I'm going to use it today.
I hope you enjoy the "definitive" 2024 Windows 8.1 experience! ^_^

Wow, you can clearly see Windows 8.1 isn't designed for 4K screens😂

Are there any reasons aside from the ones mentioned in the video description why the golden era of Microsoft Windows began in 1994 and ended in 2011 according to you?

I had a laptop that had windows 8 on it and upgraded to 8.1, i agree, it did confuse people thinking it looked like a tablet but for the life of me, how did you put a background on the start menu
@steelsofliquid
@steelsofliquid 7 месяцев назад
It's possible to change the start menu background by going into the charms menu while on the start menu (iirc), selecting the Settings option, and then "Personalize".

You need to activate it to put a background on the start screen.

Things are so tiny on that monitor lol is it 4k or is that just how 8.1 looks in 1440p?
@steelsofliquid
@steelsofliquid 4 месяца назад
If I had to guess, it's likely what 8.1 looks like on this 4K display. Though, my main settings involve my display being set to 100% scaling, so maybe that has something to do with it.

This was awesome it had a nicer Desktop UI that actually looked like a actually Windows Operating System and didn't look like crap and didn't look like Mac OS, Linux, Android, Chrome OS unlike Windows 11 or completely ugly like 10 though 11 is sh!t. The other thing was it gave the user more control of the system and didn't board you with ads and bloatware and finally it was light weight.
@steelsofliquid
@steelsofliquid 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, it was actually fairly decent by a modern standpoint, especially with 10's bloat and since Microsoft's lost their minds with Windows 11 and Server 2025.
@wartortlerulestheworld
@wartortlerulestheworld 7 месяцев назад
@@steelsofliquid Very true and that Windows has gotten alot uglier since 10 cause 10 and 11 along with their server counterparts look very ugly compared to 8.1 which was very simple but effective.

Throw in Classic Shell or it's more modern version Open Shell, and you get a proper Start menu back. Then you can pretty much use 8.1 like 7, only faster and more compatible. (At least that's what I found with it)
@steelsofliquid
@steelsofliquid 7 месяцев назад

The logon time of windows 8.1 really slow, sometimes it freezes screena and restart my computer multiple time (The reason why i dont like windows 8.x) But still some applications and classic apps still there in 8.x, i quite impressed 😊

ive been using 8.1 since more than 5 or 6 months already on both an old 2008 laptop (with an ssd tho) and an old desktop pc with an hdd, laptop with ssd takes around 2-4 seconds from windows logo to password screen, it never hit 5 seconds (and i mean from completely shut down or a restart to turning on, not sleeping), on my desktop pc with the hdd takes no more than 10 (usually), so there has to be something thats doing that, dont think is the os itself
@steelsofliquid
@steelsofliquid 7 месяцев назад
I'm unsure; I have that kind of problem running 8.1 in a virtual machine but I never had that problem back in the day on a 2-in-1 tablet which, of all things, was powered by an Intel Atom iirc.

Yeah, there are areas of 8.1 that are fairly unpolished, such as with a lot of the icons on the desktop, and some of the programs (as there's both the Windows 7 calculator and the Windows 8 and 8.1 fullscreen calculator).

It wasn't misunderstood, it was simply bad.... I've used it when it came out for quite a while because one of my laptops drivers would crash and give me blue screend on win 7 and well my faters still uses win 8 on one laptop. The problem is when it came out lots of software and games just did not run on win 8/8.1 (since then lots have been patched so it's no longer a real issue) and then you had to use the extra app for start menu to make it just like win 7 just with worse apps compatibility, it gave you nothing extra you couldn't already use on win 7 but take away compatibility and brought up the crappy UI that frankly did not work al lthat great on a tablet either as I had one as well. Win 10 tablet ui is a huge improvement starting with something as simple as the onscreen keyboard poping out when you click a text field, whereas on 8 you still had to launch the onscreen keyboard as any other app...
