Your information about registrations is wrong. The pleasure boat operators card is for the operator (think of it as your drivers license) the boat has to be either licensed or registered (Licensed you would see the ON123345 numbers on the bow) Registered would have an offical Number that you have to affix pernanently to the boat somewhere ( like carved into wood) None of the provinces individually license or register. Its all done at the federal level. all boats over 10hp must be either licensed or registered. This is nothing new, been that way for decades. and you would have paper work for either being licensed or registered. The U.S. accepts licensed vessels you still have to have all your paperwork.
Your exactly right. I recently bought a boat from a Canadian owner and he had the proper Transport Canada documentation. This guy blames everyone but himself. Always a conspiracy theory.
I have an ON number and an official number and my call sign drops sticker. I'd entered the USA from the Bahamas 2 times already! Your right I should have gone into more detail..
This happened to a friend of mine. He entered the USA with a provincially licensed boat. When he went to CBP to get his exit permit to leave the USA for the Bahamas, he discovered his mistake of not being Transport Canada registered and his boat was detained by CBP until he registered it with Transport Canada. CBP realized he was not registered to travel internationally, they refused to let him leave Florida for the Bahamas. Good on the CBP for this decision, and my friend's mistake completely. There is a reciprocal agreement between the USA and Canada for cross border boating which allows resident boaters to cross the international border without federal registration. This enables thousands of Americans and Canadians to boat in each other's areas without the high cost of Federal registration, it is a good deal. However, if you enter from a third country, you do need to be registered. How you were allowed entry to the Bahamas in the first place, I do not know. Your boat could have been seized there. Back to my friend, he registered the boat online, he then spoke with a gentleman in the Fredericton office to expedite the processing. He asked the official to Fedex the document down to FLorida, the official used his own money and his own time (he was reimbursed later by my friend) and sent it to my friend just before Xmas. My friend said that Transport Canada was a joy to deal with. THat was my experience too. I chose three names for my boat on the registration form, the first two were rejected, they emailed me and asked if I wanted to revisit all of the names. Good people at transport Canada.
Thanks for the comment... It cleared things up completely for me. It's like a light bulb came on. As a US citizen, that has been back and forth to Canada a few times in my youth, it really didn't seem to make sense. But since, as a non-US citizen, he entered from another country this time, not Canada, you explained it. Thanks again!
His past as a younger adult man is in play here. There’s some of his past history he doesn’t want to tell the camera. Which is easily solving the whole mystery for the viewer. And he’s playing it off as this customs mystery. Come clean for your fans and viewers dude. Simple as that. Also CBP makes mistakes and when they need to clean up their mistake you pay in time and scrutiny and accountability for their error. It’s just the reality .they don’t wanna admit they screwed up before about the lack of docs but that’s the deal. Gotta pay up and smile and be ice the whole way. So not unfortunately he’s paying multiple ways.
so this is why some americans pay up to 1500 dollars for a boat/ vessel documentation company to get their boat coastguard documented .. im going through this process myself. im boat doc. company shopping , they all do the same shit but their fee is a wide range from few hundred to few grand..
I’d like to clear up a few misconceptions after having spoken to several CBP officers (Jacksonville office). Hope this helps: It was only recently (this year) that a memo was circulated specifying that a vessel registration document and not a “pleasure craft license (PCL)” was required. So yes, they used to accept a PCL in the past. And the reason is not the US government. It’s Transport Canada. They do not recognize a PCL as an international vessel registration. It states this on the Transport Canada website. And there was no special agreement that Canadian boats only needed a PCL it was the CBP at the time not knowing that a PCL was the wrong document. We were denied a cruising permit this year as well. We did apply for and get our vessel registration from Transport Canada in three days. And they email a copy that the CBP will accept. Saves having to wait for and FedEx the official “yellow copy”. Unfortunately we still have to follow the “form 1300” process and clear in and out of every port of entry. It truly is a pain.
with a boat coastguard approved documentation and a working ais connected to it all. they should grant access by radio , they know the boat all info of the boat what the fuck is they scamming for just monies.. thats it no other purpose... whens the last time a terrorist came by sailboat.. oh yeah .. the Boston tea party went down.
It seems the attitude to cruisers changes over decades, in south Florida, worse in Miami, better in Ft, Lauderdale. When I came into Lake Sylvia a resident Immediately called the Police and said I had been there for a week.
I can remember coming back from the Bahamas in the 80's and not even bothering to check in with US Customs. Too much surveillance these days to get away with that now.
Thanks for posting , we are preparing to head south and have had this very discussion with many people, and so much confusion! Did you register your dinghy as well?
I look on Google earth mostly then power up my Garmin chart plotter and zoom in. Another great resource is the waterway guide, go to the explorer and look for anchor symbols.. for example I'm just south of Myrtle Beach on the ICW. I anchored just off the channel! You can find all sorts of great spots you just need to get out there and do it!!!
As a fellow Canadian I would have called my MP and let their office know about my situation and the runaround I was getting from TC....just a thought but it usually expedites things.
This guy is feeding everyone a load of crap. Just this past week a Canadian friend of mine bought an American sailboat in Florida, right away he went to Florida DMV requested to have the boats title deregistered, so he could then apply for Canadian Registration. 3 days ago his new Canadian Documentation came in the mail. I know because he used my Florida Address for the mailing address. So, for the entire process it took 10 business days. My friend got the 5 year Canadian Document for his boat... He spent about 150.00 usd for all
He bought it in Florida, meaning he paid U.S. taxes on the boat. He has not paid U.S. taxes on this boat. Either that or this guy obviously didn't know he could do that.
@@weldonwillifordrealtor yes, my friend paid florida sales tax, however Canada did give him credit for that. He had no issue getting the boat imported into Canada and getting a 5 year Canada Transport document, all done by mail and a couple phone calls
@gad5248 I see. Well if you watched my entire video you will note transport Canada said I'd get my documents within 30 days. I got it in less than that. My issue was with the CBP I'm not sure how that makes my story a load of crap..
Brings back memories...I left Toronto in 05 and spent 10 yrs south on my sailboat. Sounds like things have changed and not for the better !! ...burocracy wise. I have subbed and will follow. I am now a CLOD unfortunately....only cruisers know that term ,lol.
Captain MiKL, Hopefully, the end of the biggest beaurocratic nightmare in the history of American/ Canadian relations over something you were totally innocent of is now over! I can only tell you that NO ONE should have had that happen to you in both countries. I pray that when you read this comment, you have been sailing North peacefully and unmolested. Stay well and happy now to be doing what you truly love! Stay well and safe as you cruise for home! Regards, Steve in Vero Beach
This man. This true sailor gets it... You can be free! All those reading this comment from a true supporter of the sailing EV youtube channel... All I have to say is... leave the dock.. Try your best! Our community lives in anchorages marinas and on Oceans all over the world! Live free or die trying!!
whats the issue, you need the paper and you do not have it. now you need to do whatever you need to do to get it. regardless of if they now require it or it was overlooked in the past just get it and stop complaining.
He didn't know he needed it right? And seemed like a pain in the butt to get it. He seems to be taking stress good. A thing like that would really stress me out!
We are leaving in three weeks to the states and we also have a buddy boat. Both of our boats have Transport Canada Pleasure Craft Licences! Neither of us was aware of this requirement... Thanks to this video we now know!! Thank you Michael for bringing it to our attention!!!!!!!!!! I checked into this requirement and it is true. I am assuming that Michael was told to go get a Transport Canada Registry document (which can take 30 days!). Transport Canada's website is not clear at all and does not contain how to change from Pleasure Craft to Registry however it looks like a application for new registry is required....ugh!!!
The CBP in Florida have no idea how we register in Canada. Florida CBP want a QR code yet in Canada transport Canada has no idea!! It's a broken system! Be aware! Us Canadians have nothing to hide! We are true believers in freedom.. we exist in anchorages marines and on oceans all over the world! Live free or die trying!!
Michael, you are quite an inspiration for me as I have very little tolerance for bureaucratic bs. Maybe you did all your ranting and anger managment off camera but the way you have handled this situation is a testament to your character and i applaud you. Thank you for posting this. I admire you.
Of course, you know this, but….. so much bulshit with American immigration now…. Hope for TRUMP and you should be ok.. as it applies now, you should “illeaglealy” enter… on that note, free healthcare and acceptance….
This is a classic example of lake sailing benefits. You don’t need all of the documents to do your thing. Two questions though.. Why do they not allow you to travel at your own pace and you need to get to Georgia asap ? And why are you taking the boat back to Canada? Refit? Tired of the warm weather ?
There rules are I must not be in an anchorage more than 24 hrs. I must not be further than 7 nm off shore. If I do break those rules I must check into the nearest port of entry. The reason to go back to Canada is I'm plum broke! And this vessel needs a refit and I'm looking at getting into a bigger better vessel. I work as a cinematographer with IATSE 667. I can come up with money quick up there fill the cruising kitty up and head back out! This time I'm never coming back. I want to spend the rest of my life circumnavigating..
@@sailingEV888 sounds like a solid plan. I take it you’ll register your next boat in the US for convenience? 7 nautical miles is not a lot. It’s hard to wrap your head around some of these restrictions when I myself don’t have to follow them.
NOT UNFORTUNATELY- but you’re gonna have to say what you might NOT want to say for these videos to make sense: what’s your previous younger adult male criminal record? It’s is what’s very very possibly AND PROBABLY being the issue. The previous NOT having the document went thru by accident and now they think you might’ve had some inside intel or help internally and you’re now getting the fine toothed comb. They make mistakes too and then When they have to clean up their mistakes you pay, pay in time and frustration and pay in scrutiny, this is just life and 3rd world countries and first world customs. You probably don’t want to say what’s in your past but it’s damn probable and relevent to this specific case and it’s what they are hung up on and not approving you.
I have ZERO criminal record. I was let into the USA with out that document. And returned from the Bahamas back to Florida twice with out the certificate! Why this time? And are you insinuating I have a criminal past?

Certificate of Registry is always needed when you leave Canadian waters. You never should have been allowed to enter American waters years ago. Licensing a boat is different. Great if you never leave the country.
not needed on the great lakes and i have taken my boat to Florida 4 times ,obtained a cruising permit each time and taken it to the bahamas and back three times all with just a license.last time to bahamas was in '19 so someone has changed their policy since then.happens a lot in the US.
Proper registration and correct procedures and I have always found the CBP to very good to deal with as well the uscg is excellent. Sorry you have some difficulty but it’s not malicious I’m sure, they just like things correct.
@@neilbrown2948 just because you did it doesn’t mean it was right , if you look at your PCL it clearing states it’s not a title document (certificate of ownership). CBP and Bahamas cruise permit requires you to have proof of ownership which is TC registered. Just because you got away with it doesn’t mean it’s right .
@@topsidecanvas4584 "got away with it " suggests I did something wrong.I presented myself and my boat to customs officials as was required and complied with everything that was asked of me to their satisfaction.the first time was in 1986 and last in 2019 so obviously things have changed.
