The fact that Riker's arm was _amputated_ and put back on NEAR seamlessly without him ever realizing is so creepy to me. It makes me feel icky just thinking about something like that happening to me.

You would think that the computer would immediately alert the ships crew when a crewmember was detected to be missing from the vessel.
@Dowlphin
@Dowlphin Год назад
Virtue signaling about privacy of fulltime presence on the ship weighed against military-ish ways of conduct. They didn't want to envision a future where everybody's location is tracked all the time. Especially since they go absent outside of shift duty.

@@Dowlphin Or it could be like the Legion of Doom just opening up the Justice League's comm screen to taunt them and nobody on either side ever thinks of the espionage potential inherent in that setup. We're just not supposed to think about it. How much shorter would the runtime have been if the computer? On the other hand....... have the question and answer about crew complement take place on either side of the reattachment discussion and it establishes that the computer has to run a specific scan that takes some time to establish if everyone is present.
@Stickweasel91
@Stickweasel91 Год назад
@@Dowlphin But, they are being constantly monitored. All the captain has to do is ask 'Computer, are any crew not aboard the ship?' and the computer gives him the information. So, the computer definitely is tracking all crew members. Unless, the computer somehow does some instant headcount at the time of the request; But, in that case, they had may as well be being constantly monitored because all a captain has to do is ask the computer for a headcount. And, in the face of the unknown and incomprehensible horrors of the void, I'd be more than willing to sacrifice some sense of privacy if it meant my shipmates would know if I were abducted without warning by said horrors. Truly, there'd need to be an understanding that if you're going to space, there are sacrifices that need to be made because there are things you can't even begin to imagine out there.
@danieldickson8591
@danieldickson8591 Год назад
Why should the computer be tracking all crew members? They're on a ship in space, where would they go? Many times there's been a warning if someone used a transporter or launched a shuttle without authorization, or even opened an airlock. And yes, I would expect the 24th Century computer and internal sensors to locate someone practically instantly. But that's a command decision, not used irresponsibly.
@Dowlphin
@Dowlphin Год назад
@@Stickweasel91 This is not about not giving the captain authority to invade privacy, but not logging data in realtime. A focused sample with good reason is comparable to a cop being authorized to do things only allowed when suspecting immediate danger, or a firefighter damaging private property to combat a fire threat. And it is very likely that an internal sensor sweep was done on prompt because when people go to sleep, they typically don't wear their comm badges. (Although this would require a database with personally identifiable properties, so the technical details might require some sci-fi lenience.)

Whether it was due to budget constraints or just creative thinking, it certainly adds to the spooky factor to leave your imagination to guess what all happened to them with just medical diagnosis and references to the creepy room. Sometimes, your imagination can frighten you and disturb you more on the ways Riker's arm was cut off and put back on or Geordie's implants being messed with, etc.

Another fucking spoiler. That's actually the creepiest part. This casual talk about what's gonna happen next or at the end of revealing the whole mystery in the beginning. This widespread lack of adherence to basic social norms of audience decency. It has been particularly bad this episode. It is more of yet another societal study than a TV evening now.

That you apparently made a new account specifically for that response also shows what a psycho you are. @@philippdf But that is the whole issue, when people are not discussing the scenes but totally unnecessary, in self-obsession, present how they know the whole plot and share it, preferrably at the beginning of the episode. When rotten behavior is not called out but abetted, we get exactly the mess of a world that we see. It's no rocket science and certainly neither little-known nor rarely-taught. It's even stuff conveyed by the very stories people claim to be fans of but dishonor. (This was a particular shocker in the brony fandom, but in general I know what to expect from humankind these days. There should not be an expectation to be treated sunshine-and-rainbows under such conditions. It would be arrogant and entitled. This is also a spiritual lesson about courage and caring. - Remember, Picard risked and took a stab at his heart and that's why he is wearing red instead of blue now. Accepting suffering and worshipping suffering are two profoundly different things.)

This was a great episode. Creepy, engaging, and never fully resolving its mysteries. Hard sci-fi. What bothers me, though, is the part about missing crew. I can buy fellow crewers not noticing -- if people aren't on-shift, who knows where they might be, and it's not anyone's problem/business if they're single and living alone. However, the computer clearly knows, or at least is able to run a pattern-matching count in 0.85 seconds. So, *why doesn't it do this regularly?* They've had disappearances before, including the captain himself in "Q Who." We know that transporters are a thing, and that some civilizations have things like teleportation powers or dimensional-shifting devices. It just seems like a simple, basic procedure that even a non-military ship would run: have the computer use the internal sensors to count the sapient lifeforms aboard every 3-5 minutes (you'd obviously have access restrictions to the data to protect individuals' privacy to the extent appropriate). If that number changes without the arrival/departure of a shuttlecraft or the use of a docking hatch, gangway, or ship's transporters, have the computer initiate a warning for the section chief of ship's security, alert Sickbay, and notify the Main Bridge. I know that would sap some dramatic potential, but it seems insane that you'd have that capability and not use it. The _Enterprise_ is sophisticated enough that a crewer or passenger suffering a cardiac arrest could be readily identified within a time window during which resuscitation might still be possible. Why on Earth wouldn't you use that functionality as a matter of routine, even aside from the security considerations?
