@@squalle83 yo this guy is off gross 12 to 16 i would freak the f out. For a average week in today market 6k per week and 24 month gross. If all you care about is money 24 to 30 max a month. Stop taking cheap fright and get with a load board.
@@ghostman303 I do $4000-$5000 to FL.. I go 3 times a week🤷🏾♂️not including backhauls.. that usually don't pay what they should.. but you gotta go home right
This should have been a 2 hour interview bring this brother back & put up his information links etc… the knowledge this brother have & willing to pass down is priceless & that’s why he is so bless.
I started on my own authority when I was 19 straight out of high school doing dump truck and moved my way up to belly dump to a 48’ flatbed to a 53’ stepdeck now a RGN and I’m 34 years old and I love what I do
Back then local rates were low so I was doing $2000-$3000 now my stepdad is still doing dump truck and he averages $3500-$4000 a week take in mind with a dump truck you don’t use that much fuel
If you're brand new, learn how to drive the truck, learn how to back up, learn how to work your fuel, learn learn learn before you step out on your own! Don't step into this business blind!
When you get a CB, take some time to learn about setting it up properly also. There's a lot more to it than picking up the radio and plugging it in. Grounding, antenna tuning, etc.. You'll use it a lot more when you know it works right.
I buy all my CBs from clays radio out of San Antonio Texas it's probably one of the best radio shops in the USA.... When you buy a new one you definitely have to get it tuned up, you definitely need good antennas and good coaxial cable, if you're lacking one of these items then it won't work good at all, I recommend changing out the CB coaxial every 5 years... CB radio should be mandatory in trucking, it's such a lifesaver in bad weather and road construction...
@@TRANSPORTKING1988 noted. Newborn “choke and puke” in Ga got a guy in the back (I forgot his name) does real good with CB’s as well, also the Valero “choke and puke” in Moody Al has good CB shop.
You are absolutely right. I'm in the Northeast. But I don't know anyone to help me out with my radio. I have the Cobra 29. I know it's a cheap radio. I don't mind getting a better one. I just want it to work as it should. I want to be able to reach a few miles around me. And not just 100 yards. In other words. If something bad on the road. I would like to hear about it miles before. And not when I'm on top of the problem.
Most people want to just be able to plug it in and leave it. Like everything else these days. Part of the problem is most these guys who are company drivers are in newer trucks that have horrible grounding and just as horrible coax. Never have understood why when all these manufacturers make these trucks, they ALL throw that thin, cheap coax in the truck.
Hell yeah. Trucking saved my life. Trucking has been good to me. Never be afraid to ask questions especially around a Man like this one. 13 yrs + in this game.
Been going through hell the last few years. I start trucking school on Monday. I'm so anxious and excited. Been studying and binging youtube like crazy for months. I can't wait.
This man is the real deal holyfield! Lol solid advice from a solid true American trucker .God bless him and his family and God bless America on the 4th of July!
My step dad had a cb radio in his car when I was little and we used to talk to truckers. It was fun and they gave us info on the road. "Breaker Breaker 1-9"........😂😂🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
My trucking school stopped letting Prime reps come by because the school owner said a couple students got scammed by the lease purchase program. They were pretty predatory about it
There's not scams going on with the lease at prime. As somebody who completed a lease purchase there and now holds the title to a 2018 Peterbilt everything is straight forward there. Alot of people just don't read what there signing up for however I would not recommend leasing there to anybody else tho. You run under 2 bucks a mile most of the time and you have higher expenses than anybody else who financed a truck or outright owns one. I would do my numbers at the end of the year to find out how much I made on all miles for the year and my best year out of 4 was 1.30$ a mile which is awful.
@@sneed915 Nah, average payments there for the trucks are 900. Nobody is paying 11000 a week but even then, like I said. I don't recommend leasing there. You can make the solo lease money there as a company driver without the head ache of the truck and being 1099.
@@hillslide I completed a 4 years lease purchase there. My truck was brand new with 15 miles when I got it and Peterbilts are the most expensive trucks they buy. My payment was 901 and it goes down every year you lease payment drops.
I lease with a pretty big company and I generate on average 7-10.5 a week. Of course that’s with training students involved but I knew what I signed up for. Needless to say I make about 12-15k a month take home. Leasing isn’t a scam. Not knowing how to read contracts and not knowing how to run your truck efficiently is what creates the idea you’re being scammed.
I did the training I’ll pass. You can make some money leasing don’t do it forever though. Learn the ins and outs save up buy your own equipment work and run the lanes you choose.
I remember my flatbed orientation. Out of 40 people at least half of them went lease straight out of the gate. Rookies who barely know how to back let alone secure their loads properly or manage their clock. I just shook my head and wished them the best
@@everythingtrucking8949 hey leo I sent an email..I'm looking forward to get into the game but I just dont want to be steered off a cliff..I like your style..school me bro ✌
CBs should be mandatory in all trucks, it's such a lifesaver in bad weather and road construction, many shippers and receivers on the East Coast demand you to have one, so they can talk to you from the parking lot.... If you don't have one they will make you walk up to the window every hour... Clay's radio shop in San Antonio Texas is probably one of the best CB shops in the USA.
Not saying that’s not true. But if you don’t have a CB most companies will ask for your # an call you into a door. An also hate to say it but if you have your google on it will let you know weather an traffic updates.. CB’s are great but it’s a new lifestyle in a truck. You don’t need CB’s anymore. That time isn’t a must anymore. I’m an owner Opp an never had one. You can check weather an as long as you have a phone you can run your truck with no problems.
This man doing heavy hauling ? 15k gross out a week at a time. Coming out of Florida? That’s 595 truck stop.. your not pulling money out of Florida if your dry van.. ain’t happening.
Well said my man ! All these fleece programs these rookies are falling into nowadays are more profits for the contract company not the IC. I’ve even heard that BS of “the love of the job” crap. It’s about money in your pocket not the contract lease company .
Leo is the definition of a Man’s MAN! I would love to spend some time learning from his wisdom. I am not a trucker but have total respect for them… Leo nailed it when he said “truckers make the country go”…. God speed! 👍💪💯❤️
The only thing I disagree with is telling someone brand new to trucking to start with there own truck and authority. Not saying it CANT be done, but not the best decision in my opinion.
Now this is an awesome interview with this brotha....I love it. This brotha is straight-forward and honest. I would love to sit and chat with this brotha about the industry.
I was able to get my own truck by lease purchasing at Hirschbach. Not sure if they're still good but I was able to make an average of around 2000 net with their lease purchase program. Walk away at any time. But he's definitely right. Nothing better than working by yourself. I saved for a year with Hirschbach and became and owner operator just a year into my CDL A career.
Geesh.. you got screwed if you were lease purchase and averaged 2k..I did that as a company driver.. I'm lease now and I don't make less then 5500.00 wkly..net.. lesson learned
@@johnmilner6505 yeah, and my mother is Oprah Winfrey. Lol. I'm an owner operator now and my best week net was 6,400 so sorry if I don't buy that b.s. unless of course you're leasing your truck and running it under your own authority and in that case, it's not the same as a lease purchase "program".
Thank yall so much for this video. I'm going to cds tractor trailer school in June getting my class A. Plan on retiring from this industry as an O/O. Thanks for trucking
Maintenance!!!! Oh man it kills, and it’s not just the maintenance itself but the time your truck is down at the dealership yard collecting dust , people reaching out to you they want you to pick up or deliver! The stress you’re going through, If you want to be independent contractor you must be a mechanic, or else you’re out of business or you’re not making money. Good job Leo
He reminds me of my great uncle who was a trucker. Appreciate the wisdom. I start my CDL school on Monday. I got the ball rolling by getting my permit ahead of time. Nervous to learn manual but excited at the same time. From the marines, to nursing, and now excited to join the trucking community! I am turning down a Sparkletts route delivery position (class B) tomorrow to give myself the best opportunities with attempting to obtain the A.
Dont stress about the manual believe me its not even close to as hard as you think it is. And in the winter your going to love being able to drive a manual over an automatic
So thankful for great mentors like this guy. It IS definitely possible to succeed, if you can turn a wrench, and wade through a bit of bureaucracy. I was lucky enough to have a mentor steer me in this direction. It was tough at first, but I have only ever driven my own trucks.
I’m about to buy a truck in February. I’ve been trucking for 7 years. Started driving teams at Swift dedicated TJ Max, car hauling with Hansen & Akins, then I went into the LA Ports & Rails with JB Hunt.
I love this man!!! I had similar ideas when it comes to the transportation industry. I’m not going to own my authority without learned how to drive and back. All this information was super helpful. 🙏🏽
I like this dude lol as soon as he said maxxforce and paccar get off the road , we driving cat and Detroit 60 series, I was like hell yeah this guy knows his stuff
