Finally it's time to get the tender crops planted out at the allotment! The weather has improved now and temperatures are looking much better... as I'd expect for the middle of May!
We are past our last frost date now (I'm pretty sure) so I've decided to go for it and plant out most of the delicates. Cabbage, broccoli, courgette, beans, and sweet corn, are amongst the things being planted out this week!
There's so much going on at the allotment vegetable plot right now, and I cannot wait to show you all in this update! we'll go around the plot and see what's changed since last week, too!
If you've got any feedback, suggestions, or questions, drop them in the comments below! I reply to everyone's comments and love a good gardening chat, as well as hearing your thoughts and opinions!
If you enjoyed the video, leave us a like (it helps out a lot) and if you haven't already, and want to see more of my videos in the future, subscribe and press the bell icon so you never miss any new videos!
I'd like to say a huge thank you to those who have supported my gardening channel so far!

when you've no heat in the greenhouse or polytunnel the temps can be very similar to a cold frame. i've never hardened off plants for years now and no problems. in fact, with the right varieties of brassicas you can even plant out slightly earlier. i planted out a few cabbages and caulis mid march this year and they never looked back...................brian

@@downtoearthwithjim sweet peas are one of those plants that will look like they're sulking in the pot for ags if they're not suited to the compost, then as soon as a bit of regular heat hits they're off like a rocket. unfortunately i've never found a compost that does all plants. at the moment i'm using a cheap wickes compost that i originally called crap, but it seems plant roots go daft in it...................brian

All the allotment owners have been dealing with slugs and other insects,but the slugs have been everywhere. I gather your family really likes onions. 👍 Peas, whether sweat peas or the other ones, have been abysmal growing. We may have to adjust our garden starts to compensate for the changes in climate, again. Your plot looks much healthier than my own tiny garden.
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 4 месяца назад
Thank you. Honestly my plot may look perfect to some but I don't think it is. There again I'm quite a modest person. It could be tidier, and some things I'm not good at growing. Sweet peas may be a failure this year as they're still not growing. I usually have some failed crops each year but that's just gardening. We love our onions, I'm trying to grow enough for a year. We string them up and hang them in our pantry. I agree, our climate is not what it used to be at all

I've held back planting out Tomatoes and Squash as 6 deg C is forecast for Monday night and it can be a couple of degrees lower at my rural beyond edge of village plot. Better to wait a couple of days than have to cover up loads of individual plants, plus have them set back a week. And the forecast might get worse after they're in.
@downtoearthwithjim

I've often found that temperatures dip at this time of year, mid to late May after a warm spell. Not sure why. Got down to 8/9c last night which I didn't expect. My tomatoes are all being grown under cover this year and my squashes will be in the poly only. Thanks for watching, David 😁

It's to stop cabbage root fly laying their eggs, I explain in more detail at 26:00 😊 Thanks! You know, I've not actually thought that through yet 😂 I could let them sprawl but they'll take over so I'll probably build some sort of support when I add my squash and melon supports to the polytunnel - video on that hopefully next week if I have chance! Thanks that means a lot! ☺️ Took 5 years to get it to where it is now, still lots to do. I've got some scaffolding netting which I'm putting over them this week although I'm not entirely sure that'll stop the root fly as it's not fine enough - it may help keep them off though. Interestingly my carrots were clean last year and I didn't net them at all!

Glad to see you more positive, we all get frustrated with disease, weather and pests . Your plots look much bigger than ours and they do take a lot to maintain, good luck with the new one, it was a long way to your mum's plot. An old plot owner near me says no matter what happens just keep planting, don't ponder on why plants haven't done well, just keep planting new ones. All the best for the rest of the season. Phil.

It's scaffolding/debris netting from Screwfix. It's not as fine as scaffolding netting usually is but the holes are still small enough to stop cabbage whites and cabbage root fly. Questionable with carrot root fly though!

Brilliant video James, your plot is so well organised and an inspiration. My plot is a little chaotic but I am only going into my second year so I need to be patient. The mares tail, I hear you! I can believe how quickly it grows 😫 The slugs are a real problem this year, they’ve eaten my peas twice and my sugar snaps that I planted last week. Can I ask what pellets you use and where did you get the cabbage collars from? Keep up the good work and I love the videos whatever length they are 🌱
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your kind comment 😊 I need to have a good de weeding session haha 😂 just take your time, bit by bit is the best way, I've had my plot 5 years and my first year was lockdown so I had a big advantage and was very fortunate to have 6 months to work on my plot almost every day. Remember, progress is progress no matter how big or small. Direction is more important than speed. The pellets are organic ones just from tesco.. I don't use them often, only at the beginning of the growing season when things are small and vulnerable.. I try and use them sparingly and only on high risk veggies the slugs will go for. I got the cabbage collars off Amazon or eBay, can't remember haha, it was 5 years ago but that's a testament to their strength and durability. I think I got 50 or so for £15-20?
